I have just taken delivery of a 21.5" iMac and have noticed this issue, the main thing is because I have a MBP as well, the screens are so so different, its madness!! I dont know if this bothers me or not. Can be a little annoying though I must admit.

Brand new?

I have tried to live with it for about 1 week now and can't. Every time I am viewing a gray or white webpage the bottom of the screen has a yellowish tint. In my opinion, it's totally unacceptable considering the price we pay for these units. We pay the "mactax" for a reason....and getting inferior products isn't an option for me.

As I stated, I scheduled a return/refund for mine. I will try again when the new ones are released at some point this year. I will have to use my MBP until then.

I made a thread for my 24" Cinema Display but haven't gotten any replies back, so I figure I'll ask here where you guys have firsthand knowledge of Apple's yellowing displays.

Copied from the other thread:

So, this is killing me: I can't tell if my screen's ok or not. I get the feeling the bottom left third of the screen is yellower/warmer, but again, maybe I'm just being paranoid. I did all the tests intended for the iMac yellowing, but I can't conclude, maybe my eyes just aren't accustomed to detecting the problem or not.

I'm not a photographer or anything, but is my display acceptable? I have AppleCare until August, this was bought secondhand, refurbished.

:(

should i get another imac with this or is this not bad enough?

That's bad enough. Take it back.
I took back less worse than that from customer returns.

And don't buy any of that plastic PC junk.

I truly hope this problem will be solved with the next iMac!
This is still such a huge problem for so long, why isn't it fixed yet?

Other displays don't have this problem, only Apple displays, why pay so much for a display with this sort of problems? Especially for the photographer's and graphic designers (two major iMac-buyers) it's a shame.

You can really see the screen differences when viewing this forum. All I have to do is stare at one post and make that post scroll down to the bottom of the screen. It goes from bright white to yellowish.

I bought a refurbished unit. I am assuming these refurbs have screens in them that people have sent back.

I called applecare and the rep said he hadn't even heard of the issue before so it can't be a continuous problem. I suggested he google the issue and see how many people have complained of this and apple themselves have even made statements about the issue previously.

I am not going round and round with them. I love the iMac so it's very disappointing. I am sending it back and will most likely purchase a brand new one when they do the refresh. If I receive a bad screen at that point then it will e returned and I will never buy an iMac again. At least not until I know they have swapped panels to something different. I don't have the luxury of testing out a new one before buying at an apple store. It's an hour drive each way to the nearest store.

Weird thing is that the same panel is used in Dell Ultrasharp 2711 and they have ZERO problems with this yellownesh.

I Think it has to do with the iMac. A complete computer in a chassis the size of a normal flatscreen display. No where the heat and dust can go besides a small hole in the back, which is blocked by the stand to hide it and look good.

iMac's sure do look good - but the same good looks is the reason why so many have trouble with their iMac screen. Heat, dust and particles color the glass and panel yellow.

The iMac uses WLEDs for backlight, whereas the Dell 2711 uses CCFLs. I don't know if that explains the yellow tinge. The 27" ACD uses the same LED backlit panel as the 27" iMac, but the yellow tinge doesn't seem to be an issue with the ACDs.

The yellow isn't caused by dust buildup because it's there right out of the box. It's mainly at the bottom right of the panel, so it could be something inherent in the assembly. If you go back through the "yellow" threads you'll find speculation that it might be due to rough handling in shipping.

tell me opinions please!

hi! this is a photo from my brand new i5 imac.

Based on your experience do i have a problem and if yes is it a big one?

theres a slight yellow tint.
The thing is that if i return it, it might be worse.
That's why i'm asking based on forum's experience how bad is it.
Should i take the risk to return it and get a new one?
Thank you again!

If you are worried about getting a worse screen do what I did after trying 4 imacs. Return it and get a PC with a decent monitor.

It was speculated that the backlighting was the culprit, I'm inclined to agree on this as the only real difference (other than the fact that the iMac is a computer as opposed to being solely a monitor) is that the U2711 uses CCFL backlighting and the iMac uses LEDs. The main problem it seems was that the LEDs used in the iMac are not RGB LEDs, but white phosphor coated LEDs. Whether this is true or not is open to debate. It could just be dodgy panel production.

Having owned both the 2009 and 2010 27 inch and 21.5 iMacs, and having returned them both (particularly poor screen on the 21 inch models, very yellow in patches all round the screen), I would be reluctant to purchase another until they receive a revamp, if that ever happens.

Hi Guys,

I'm following this thread for a while and posted some photos of my 27 inch iMac screen a few months ago.
Apple finally gave me a new iMac but I still have a yellow tint. The thing is that they won't replace my screen or whatever. Apple is telling me that there's a margin of yellow tint and that my screen is in the margin. They told me this 100 times before and they didn't want to replace/fix it because my screen was in the margin.
Did you also got the same response?
And what should I do?

Kind regards

Right,

No yellowing issue that i can see on my 4th 27 imac but still there seems to be what i call a light leak from the bottom left and right side of the screen which when you have a very dark/ black baground the bottom left/right sides are obviously lighter than the rest of the screen.

Anyone else have this?

My first 3 macs were from Cork with a CK serial number and this one my 4th well i don't know where its from, it has a W serial number W843.... anyone know where this relates to?

Cheers

W8 is from China. My first one was also W8 and had yellow tint and the new one CK has also a yellow tint!

Is there any indication, or even faith on these forums that this issue is going to be fixed in the 2011 iMac? I'm keen to get one but know I can't even begin to be bothered dealing with this if it's still present.

Sorry but NO!

2" thick computer in a chassis the size of a display = issues with air, dust and particles from the computer on the led panel and screen glas

We'll know soon enough, won't we? The refresh is coming...

I'm going to be getting an iMac on Tuesday so I hope I don't have this. It seems like there is a lot of people here who have the issue but I'm assuming its still quite rare to get bad cases of yellow tint.

I don't know, is this yellow? To me looks very good (i5 quadcore built in November 2010)

There is a slight tint at the bottom, but it's hardly noticeable. If you don't notice it then don't worry about it.

The only people that should be concerned with it are hardcore graphics professionals/photographers that need absolute perfect color calibration.

For most of us you'll never notice is in regular use.
