I was completely new to macs as well when I decided on buying an iMac (mid-2010). I was aware of the yellow tint issue but was convinced that I would get the best computer I have ever owned. And I did. Now this iMac has a little bit of that yellow tint on the bottom of the screen. However, it is only visible in those yellow tint tests and even then it does not exactly look like the color yellow -- it just looks like a warmer tone of white. I cannot see the yellow tint in normal use. If I really focus on the colours of, say, this page, I kinda see that the tone of color kinda changes a bit towards the bottom.

I think most people complaining about this issue (aside from those who have REALLY BAD yellow tinge) forget that these iMacs are otherwise great computers and there is no alternative in the Windows PCs for an iMac -- meaning a high-performance big screen computer that is super compact and stylish and has great functionality. Yes, the yellow tint issue is unaccaptable but it also is something that really counts only to those who demand absolutely perfect screens (graphics professionals). Now I could have replaced mine but I did not want to lose the best computer I've ever owned (yes, I mean even the quality of the display).

I would encourage you to go for it. If you get an iMac with a really bad yellow tinge, you can always replace it as Apple lets you do this. Hopefully you will get a perfect screen but if you don't and you get a screen that has a little bit of the yellow tinge... You have two choises: 1) either focus on the yellow tint tests or 2) actually use and be happy with your iMac.

Thanks Tigerman82 - thats exactly the type of feedback I was after. You've convinced me to get one I think

As an owner of a 24 inch iMac from 3 years ago, I can't believe that all the issues those old models suffered from continue to this day. Apple simply doesn't give a damn, I guess. Buzzing, yellow screens, loud awful HDs. Apple knew about all this years ago. They're just as pathetic as every company that Apple fanboys claim they moved to Apple from. I'll never buy another PC from Apple. Ever. They clearly don't give a damn about the consumer.

I agree, but no big company gives a damn about its customers. That's just the nature of business. Apple can just get away with it because of the rampant amount of faboys and how popular it has become in recent times to teens.

They can afford to churn out low quality items at huge markups because... they just can, and they're not going to go out of business anytime soon. Once people realize "hey, this is not worth $1300+" and a ton of people stop buying Apple, THEN they'll start doing something about it.

Until then, they save money by using low quality labor/parts/quality control, and only a negligible amount of people know something's wrong.

I wouldn't have even known about this yellow tint issue if I didn't look for information online regarding iMacs before my purchase. If I didn't see this thread or reports about the yellowing (and 99% of the world doesn't), I wouldn't even have noticed the yellow.

If hackintoshing wasn't such a hassle to keep updates and a hit-miss with hardware, I would have never even considered paying $1300 for such an under-powered 4 year old tech desktop (errr, ok, it's a pretty good deal if you were to buy a similar HP/Dell computer and a monitor, so that's unfair to say. But I can build my own computers and the same specs cost about $600 in parts)

I paid well over 2 grand for a core2duo/2gigram/320gighd.

What week is yours?

Does it emit a high pitched whine when your brightness is turned down from full?

Hi,
I just took delivery of my very first Mac, and saw all this about the yellowing screen.. checked it out.. seems to have some issues when I use that screen test.. is it going to bother me? I don't know? Am I going to notice it if I wasn't using the 'yellow-test' and reading all this stuff? I don't know?

I bought a 21.5" refurb.. makes me wonder if, when someone gets their machine replaced for 'yellow' issues, do they just send it on out to someone else, because perhaps the degree of annoyance is in the eye of the beholder? If there is no 'fix', maybe they just keep sending them out to refurb buyers, hoping they'll get one who won't complain?

Anyway.. how can you tell which 'week' your build is? And.. I had a look and couldn't find where to change the 'brightness'.. any details?

Thanks

It's the 4th and 5th Digits of your serial # I believe.

Also, I sent you a PM patchouli, you can view it by navigating to your private messages panel through a box in the top-right of the forum.

i think i found my serial #? (mabe some one can tell me were it is lol) .... is there anything known about week 50?

When they do a refurb, don't they give it a new serial number?
If so.. then how could the 'build' number be significant.. or do they only change the last digits.. or what?

Just bought a 21.5 Imac yesterday. I didnt even know about the problem or this forum. But half an hour later after i turned it on and was trying to put my files into it, i was working with the finder a lot and suddenly i noticed a yellow tint. I stopped in my tracks and looked from all angles and different images. Still there.

Then when i did the search for it, i saw that i had bought a dud.

Called Apple and they have fixed me up with an appointment with the local store. The rep said that they will replace it on the spot, but to not quote him. Lets see what happens.

Then i went back to my Samsung hooked to windows, which is perfect ! I wish Apple made like a mini tower without the monitor, so i can choose a quality monitor like NEC or Samsung. I HAD to buy the iMac to get a decent machine and price. The Mac Mini is still using the Core 2 Duo. Does Apple buy them for like 10 cents a pound these days? And who wanted the mini to be so small? We dont live in a space station where space is premium. Make a bigger mac and put a Core i5 in it and it will solve a lot of headache having to deal with these sucky monitors.

Just came back from the Apple Store. All the 21.5" display units in the store were the same.

But the Apple store guy did something that had me dumbfounded. He went to desktop settings and chose a white background. Then i couldnt notice the yellow tint. I guess the background that comes with the Mac is nearly not white, but more like off white. Anyways, i pulled up an empty AppleScript window that was bright white and then i could see the dull white/yellow tint in the corner. Then a couple of other store guys tried to check it out. One of them kinda noticed it but was afraid to say anything.

Anyways, the guy said that all they could do was try to fix the panel. And if i had bought the machine from the store, then they could think of replacing it.Hence he asked me to return it to the online retalier.

I just got home. So i am going to hook that thing up and give one last look. If its bothersome, then off it goes back to the retailer. But if i am looking hard to find it, then i guess i will keep it.

All in all, it has been frustrating. Right now i am on my Samsung Synchmaster hooked to a mac mini and its so good !

Apple? "It Just Works". Yes it does, for a select few. And thats my take on it.

Finally, day 3 of my saga.

I tried to see if i can overcome the tint and i couldnt. I packed it back up and sent it to the retailer.

Then i also ordered the Mac Mini 2010. I know its a bummer, but compared to my older 1.8 Ghz, its a step up. Plus, my only gripe with my existing mini was, it could handle max only 2 GB Ram. With the new one, i can put 8 GB.

So i am happy with my decision and the thought of connecting a nice Samsung monitor only makes it sweeter.

Oh BTW, the iMac not only had the yellow tint, but the colors were completely washed out as well. No amount of calibration could fix it. Only way was to increase the contrast and when i did that, i couldnt see the alternating blue and white backgrounds in Finder. So was back to square one again.

I will wait till Apple comes out with a mid tower sort of product with a Core i5 or i3, till then i am going to ride with the mini.

But this forum has been great and very useful. And i have put an end to my dilema by just forgetting the iMac or the Apple Screens.

There was a quote i heard somewhere by executives of Foxconn who manufacture Apple products.

"In the future, everything will be made by Foxconn and sold by Walmart".

Looking at the quality, i am not surprised at all.

Adios iMac.

Well I finally bit the bullet and just ordered the 27" 2.66 ghz i5 refurb. Unfortunately I'm more worried than excited, because i feel like with my luck I'll have a screen issue and go through a bunch of hell like a lot of you guys.

Edit to ask a quick question:
I know the Refurb has the same limited one year warranty as new, but do I also get the one full year before needing to buy Extended AppleCare?
Thanks

To answer your quick question... yes, you can still wait the year before extending apple care.

As for your concerns... I was SUPER parnoid and nervous as hell when waiting for my refurb i7 to show up. The main reason i didnt' get an iMac in early 09 was due to the yellowing issues. After updates, it appeared that apple was getting better at fixing the problems, but that the line was not entirely perfect. None the less, i got tired of waiting and bit the bullet and just got a refurb. Honestly... i coudlnt' be more happy. The machine is near perfect. I easily notice yellowing and can see it in all the displays models at the apple store, but mine had nothing. No dead pixels or a loud hard drive either. No buzzing noise, no grey banding... just about perfect. It even came with an extra 4Gigs of ram for free since it was a refurb. About the ONLY negative thing i can say about it is there is the slightest bit of light bleed in the lower right hand corner, but its barely noticable unless i'm in a dark room with an entirely black screen... and even then its not bad like some of the pictures posted on here. I think you should stop worrying :p

Right,

Imac 27 number 3 going back :(

As soon as I switched it on there was this high buzzing sound and when the main screen came on with the stars etc I could see that again at the bottom left and more so on the bottom right extreme light bleed which makes the black goto grey.

Then then hard drive was really noisy!

Now I am not looking for faults but these issues were their noticeable straight away!!!

Will phone apple care again in the morning and get it exchanged once more.

Question, how many times will they change it for you?
Also can I ask them to check it over before they send it to me or is this not possible?
Also can I delay the delivery for 2 weeks as I am going on holiday on Monday and want to make sure that I am here when it gets delivered so should there be any issues I can deal with it straight away?

I have not given up on my iMac 27 just wish they'd have better quality control.

Ah well.......

Just phoned :apple: care but they only deal with Iphone issues over the weekend??????

Can this be correct?????

Poor show if it is!

Anyone know any different or have a apple care telephone number in the UK i can use not the 0844 209 0611 :apple: care number i have been using.

Want to send my 3rd imac back (see above post), with the second one they are collecting on Monday.

hmmm

Apple has become? ....and soon they will move to China and be owned by the government helping them steal more water from the great lakes.

Well, I dont even get the privilege of testing for display issues. Just got my iMac, unpackaged and plugged it in; no picture! It makes the sound like its booting up, the keyboard and mouse are on, but just a black screen. Any suggestions, or should I be putting it back in the box to send back?

iMac 21.5 i3 Refurbs

For those looking to buy one of the refurbished mid-2010 22" i3 iMacs, I just got mine, refurbished in Nov 2010. Yep. It does have a barely perceptible yellow tint near the bottom 1/3. Sigh. I'm bummed, as I thought a refurb would give me a 'cured' machine.

Other than that, it's wonderful, the IPS panel is still better than the Acer hooked up to my Mac Mini, and I love the all-in-one ... no more cable clutter.

I'm going to try and see if a PRAM reset will help. I doubt it, but I'm not optimistic a swap will get me a machine without the problem.

I feel for you mate. I ended up with 2 x 27" and they were fine but had other faults and went back. Then I've had 7 21.5" and ended up with a ok ish one. I just couldn't take the hassle any more and ended up with one which I feel is ok ish. Its not 100% but about 98% and i'm happy

I wouldnt touch it. Pack it and send it back. Its a new one. You shouldnt have to put up with this.

Yes, mine seems 98% too. The tint is rather mild -- I noticed it quickly only because I was looking for it. Changing the profile to RGB makes it barely perceptible. If this is the only problem I have with the i3 I'll be happy.
