new 27"

see pics. The top has a reddish hue to it and the bottom third looks yellowish. Does this get better with more 'hours' on the LCD??

The yellowing appears to be getting worse. Glad I called apple last Friday...they are replacing my iMac.

I hate this thread. I didn't even realize i had the issue until i noticed this thread and started paying attention. Brand new 2011 iMac, 21" base model. The entire right hand has a subtle yellow tint. It's not bad (I didn't notice for 3 days). But now i know it's there and i look for it, it's quite obvious. The left is a nice crisp white, almost a tiny bit of a blue tint, and the right is slightly creamy and a little yellow.

Looking through here some people definitely have it worse. But it IS annoying me. I ordered it online from Apples website.

Not sure what to do..i don't want to go to the store to have the staff tell me they can't see it. I'd feel like an idiot. But it is 100% there.

My replacement 2011 iMac has this same exact issue.

I first noticed it at home when I opened System Preferences in the top left corner of the screen and then had to drag it to the bottom right hand corner. The grays in the window went from a nice cool blue-ish tone to a dingy warm yellow.

I even took this second iMac to a local Genius Bar and demoed the problem, but the guy swore up and down that he didn't see it. I had taken my first 2011 iMac in a few days earlier for a really bad yellow tint problem.

I'm not sure what to do about this one.

Since you ordered it online, give apple support a call. describe the problem to them and they'll arrange a pick up for your computer. Be prepared to get transferred and stay on the line for at least half an hour.

That is EXACTLY what I don't want to deal with. So I am waiting for a Mini refresh instead, or until they guarentee there will be no more yellow screens.

My thoughts too. Are you guys sure this isn't an issue across a lot of displays, both apple and non apple ?

Just out of interest i went and looked at the Dell 24" IPS display. It's a expensive display (300 or £400). Its well calibrated and everything. And guess what ? I fire up this thread to get to the yellow test, and before i even get there, i notice the left hand side white had a purple pink tinge. The right is pure white. It's much more noticeable than the yellow tinge on my monitor.

Bar spending literally 1000's on a Eizo display, i dont think you can guarantee pure unformity of color. After all, that is one of the reasons displays costing the amount of a 27" iMac cost so much in the first place, it's an actual feature.

27" display yellow and dim on new iMac

I purchased a new BTO 27" iMac in April 2011 and it was very bright but had some faint yellow tint in the bottom third of the screen and more noticeable on the left corner. I didn't really notice until I called in when the new iMacs were released and I asked for the new model. They sent a return label and shipped out the new iMac after i paid for it. (two currently on cc). I booted up new one and I immediately noticed that screen on the new one was significantly dimmer and had a much more yellow tint. It was side be side with the one ordered in April, which is how I noticed the brightness level and heaver yellow tint. I called apple and they apologized and stated that they would ship me out the third iMac and sent me a new return label. This is ridiculous. This is my first experience with a mac and I'm not happy about it. Both iMacs were purchased in 2011 one in April and the second on May 3rd. I have found this issue goes all the back to 2009??! Is there any hope?

There is hope when the iMac body goes through radical redesign, which may or may not include a new screen.

I didn't even notice the yellowing until I saw this thread. During normal use, I don't notice it unless I'm looking for it.

It's really a personal choice it you want to exchange your new iMac because of the yellow tint issue but it may not be worth the trouble since they all might have it to some degree.

My opinion is that if your iMac works and there are no huge flaws that make it disfuctional, just keep the darn thing and enjoy it. Getting obsessive compulsive only makes things stressful and removes the fun of the experience.

I hate this thread. I didn't even realize i had the issue until i noticed this thread and started paying attention. ......

First, you should rather hate Apple for selling you a substandard unit and hoping you wouldn't notice, don't you think?

Second, this thread has more than 3000 posts for a reason.

Third, if you don't like it (and still can) - replace it! Some people were reporting 5 or 6 rounds, before they got the right one, so prepare for a long haul.

Fourth - good luck!

Wow. This yellow tint isssue is still around?

Looks like ALL the iMacs have yellow tint. Its a built in feature.

A GREAT product, yet it has an inferior display. No wonder Apple has 50 Billion in cash.

Damn my new 27inch i7 has a tint. It isn't awful, but I went to the Apple store today to look and compare and mine is definitely worse than theirs on display.

I am really torn because half the posts I read say "there's no such thing as a perfect LCD, live with it blah blah" and the others say "omg apple should be perfect don't ever accept anything unless it is." And while I agree that I just spent $2500 and it should in fact be perfect, I'm also aware that nothing in life is perfect.

That being said, after looking at the ones in the Apple store, I've decided that mine could definitely be better, and while there may be no such thing as a perfect screen, there are some that are definitely better than mine.

I wish I could just go trade it in in store, but since mine is custom built I've got to do it online. In y'all's experience, which is easier - trying to talk to Apple and get them to send a replacement, or to just return it and buy a new one?

Here's hoping that the second one I get will be better.

I also have BTO, they will send me a new one after i send back the defective one. So, i bought a new one on the phone first, will get it today, compare the two and send whichever one is worse back for a refund.

It really is surprising, isn't it!? I went through 5 iMacs back in 2009 (see way earlier posts in this thread), and then gave up and went with a 17" MacBook Pro, which by the way, I LOVE! Screen looks great on my MacBook Pro, I am very happy with it.

I have of course toyed with the idea to buy the 27" Cinema Display to pair with my MacBook Pro, but am too afraid I would get it home and see yellow!! (-:

I am planning to buy an iMac 27" when this school year ends, but I am feeling a little hesitant after reading all this bad experiences with the screens.

I really enjoy the screen quality of my MBP and that's one of the reasons I'd like to have a 27" screen of the same quality.

Currently I am using a Samsung T220 Syncmaster as screen for my windows pc and I am hoping the iMac would be a serious upgrade in picture quality.

Vote with your dollars.

I was going to buy the new iMac but have held off due to this yellow tint defect.

If the lack of sales impact Apple, they WILL correct this issue.

I am starting to think the problem is viewing angle. I thought I had the yellow tint at the bottom but noticed that when I move my head down so my eyes are parallel with the bottom half of the screen, the yellow is not there.

It definitely was not the viewing angle on the 27" I sent back. Could clearly see a yellow tint that got worse towards the bottom of the screen.

so yes in theory if you dont buy a iMac it will have a impact on sales ...something like % 0.0000001 less sales for apple , even if some 100000 will not buy ,it wont have a impact apple will be concerned about
they can easy level out any losses on iMac sales with profits on iphone/iPod,iPad sales

Apple is now in a market position they could sell a aluminum Apple for $500 as long as the apple logo is on it it will sell even if it has no function at all and isnt eatable
with net profits counted in billions and rising ,even with issues in some devices
..why should Apple be concerned about some liitle flaw like a yellow tint if most of their customers are willing to ignore the little yellow tint and buy anyway

figures above from apples website
