It's not the best of picture but I think I can see the yellow tinge...only 3 days old!

Can you see it or is it just me?

Waste of time. The perspective of the screen shows the pic isn't taken from anywhere near the correct viewing position.

Wouldnt it be better to get a screen cap?

Nope. As I said before, a screen cap shows you what SHOULD be on the screen, not what the display is actually SHOWING.

Cecil, while the viewing angle is clearly not ideal in the image in question, I think it's still pretty clearly affected. A better photo, square on with the display, would be preferable, of course.

Has anyone posted a image of a screen that hasn't failed? I'm just curious about the differences because if powerless's is a FAIL then Im pretty sure mine is too.

Quit being a tool. If you don't have the yellow issue, fine, good for you. But the rest of us do have the yellow tint problem and are trying to figure out the best way to get it fixed. Honestly, if we didn't have the problem, I'm sure 99% of us could find better ways to spend our time than making up fake yellow tinge stories and posting them on the internet.

So we wait till they fix the problem then bring our computer to apple store to have them fix it?

I have yet to see a single screen that looks correct. I'm considering just getting a refund, I am no nitpicker, but for 2 grand, these are subpar machines.

So I spoke to soon... as I previously reported my week 50 machine to be 'perfect.' I've left it on for about 14 hours with iTunes Visualizer, Netflix streaming, Hulu, and a CPU stress test maxing out all 4 cores (and the other 4 virtual cores). And now... intermittent flickering, one very quick black out, and some yellow tint/hue at the bottom of the screen. Called Apple, and they indirectly acknowledged the issue (quoting specific parts actually). So my machine goes back for a replacement after the New Year. Bummer.

Did you order from online, or purchase in store?

BTO, so it was ordered online (through a reseller, but replacements can be sent back to Apple). It was _not_ in stock when I ordered it, so it went straight from China to California (with a brief stop in Utah). Hot of the presses so to speak. This isn't official, but the explanation I received from Apple (again, not official) is most likely a defective inverter cable and/or graphics card.

I've had my display swapped and the yellow appeared in different locations of the screen. This is certainly not a glass issue.

^^Agreed! I had four iMacs (1 and 3 had stuck pixels, 2 had a rattling optical drive fan, 4 had the yellow screen--incidentally, I only became aware of the yellow screen on my 4th. The first three had such obvious problems that they went back to the Apple store so fast)

I brought in my 4th iMac due to a high-pitched whistle when dimming below full brightness. Of course, the genius could not hear it. So, I took it home. I then discovered the yellow tint. I took it in and was treated like crap by the geniuses at the bar. They joked, "What number is this for you?" to which I replied, "I am amenable to a repair." The genius stated, "That would probably be best." So, a new display kit was ordered.

When I came back to pick it up, I turned it on and the yellow tinge had moved from the lower third of the screen to dead center. Not only that, but there were tons of visible particles trapped under the glass. So, I demanded they put my refund on a gift card and told them I would try again a few months when Apple got its manufacturing issues worked out.

So, I am without and really missing it. But, I can wait for a uniform display. My iMacs were all base model 21.5" iMacs. When I try again, I might go with the 1TB 21.5" iMac with the upgraded graphics processor or the base model 27".

I really hope I'm not jinxing anything.

I'm on my second i5. First had definite yellowing plus the dreaded flicker. It was exchanged after 5 days (when the flicker first occurred). The yellowing wasn't much but the flicker was a definite deal killer. BTW, this had a WD hard drive and was silent. I think that over a couple of day the yellow would have also become a killer. It's just one of those things that once you see it you can't ignore it. Plus I do photography and that would have made it impossible to calibrate. Or if it did calibrate, I would be forever correcting an okay image.

My second i5 has a Seagate but is also silent. I got this machine on 12/2 (16 days ago) and it has no yellow and no flicker. But it couldn't mount a single side, dual layer DVD. Found this out after 5 days or so. So instead of replacing it (I was still in the swapping out period) I decided to go ahead and get the optical drive replaced. Luckily I live close to a very helpful Apple Store and they did this in under 2 hours. The original one was a Sony and the new one is a LG. That fixed the DVD mounting problem.

So, unless yellowing or flickering appears (now after 16 days, let's hope not!) all looks good. At this point I'd wouldn't drop dead from surprise if another problem cropped up, but as they say ... so far so good.

im so sad :(

yep im another one.. brought my imac home today... and took me just afew hours to notice that yellow tint.. other than that, what an amazing machine.. what a damn shame.. planning on bringing it back sunday for a switchout..... but im not feeling very confident that will solve my problem.. how many out there have switched their machine out to get one without the yellow tint? and is there a best way to go about doing this?

im just so disappointed....

I spoke too soon. Mine is a week 40 - just got it on Thursday night. At first I thought it looked great, but left it on and came back on Friday morning to check email and could notice slight yellowing 2/3 way down to bottom of screen. Did try to calibrate and adjust contrast. It is only a slight yellowing so I am going to keep it as I don't want to take my chances and end up with a unit that has dead pixels or a worse screen.

My other desktop died so I need to have a computer.

My sister still hasn't opened hers. She purchased hers yesterday afternoon and she was going to open it on Christmas day but I have begged her to open it up and inspect it. Her unit is a week 50, but I won't be able to see it until Christmas Eve as I am flying to Sydney (4000kms from me) to spend Christmas there.

I posted this in the Week 50 thread, but it is better suited here...

Week 40. Got it two days ago. Was going to keep it until I saw how many dead pixels my iSight has.

The first post of this thread states that the issues still exists with the first batch of Refurbished 21.5" iMacs. However I can't seem to find any evidence of anyone stating that they had the issue after buying a refurbished 21.5". Can someone quote the posting or direct me to it?

Wow, for me personally, when I change the desktop background to a solid color, especially either of the grays, I can see the yellow at the bottom of the screen much more apparently than using "the test".

Obviously this is a bad news for consumers but what a nightmare this is going to be for Apple. I would still like to see just 1 new iMac that doesn't have this problem.

That was a better test for me, as well, although I could see it in the test link. I really didn't notice it before, and as others have said, I kind of wish I hadn't gone there because now it's quite obvious, especially with the solid color desktop wallpapers.

I have a week 49 21.5", and am wondering if this will get worse and how aggressive should I be about getting it replaced/repaired. It was our Christmas present to each other, a big purchase for us, and I would like to be as near to perfect as possible. Makes me a little sad.

Here's a quote on this thread,

It's been forever since I've posted here, and was hoping for my first post back to be a good one. Unfortunately, I took delivery of a 21.5 iMac two days ago and it indeed has the yellow tint at the bottom. It is subtle, but as some here put it so succinctly, you can't "un-see" it once you know it is there. I actually noticed it without the test pattern posted here, but I used it to confirm the issue. It doesn't seem as bad as some of the others I've seen posted, but it is aggravating.

Note that mine is a refurb; one of the early 21.5 iMacs to hit the site. Basically I gambled and lost. I knew about the potential issues, but I figured Apple would do a better job testing that they did. Be forewarned; this particular problem apparently can skip right through the refurb process. I have no idea why it was returned in the first place, but the rest of it seems fine.

Not sure what to do at this point. It would seem that the odds of getting another bad one are pretty high; it might even be worse. My other concern is that although I have an Apple Store close to my home, the fact that it's a refurb would likely mean I have to wait for them to ship me another refurb. I don't know that for sure, but I could understand Apple not wanting to hand be a brand new iMac for $200 off. I don't like the idea of being down a computer for what could be a couple of weeks, but I already transitioned my old G5 to the kids. I've never had a bad Mac before, and I've had my share of them over the years. In fact, I don't ever think I've had any bad computers. Bummer; maybe I was due :)

Oh well; just another data point I suppose. I'll have to figure it out over the next couple of days. If there are still those out there that still thinks these problems are isolated, I suggest they put down the bong and do a little more digging. :) I was surprised to see just how many people have had the problem, and how prolific the post were on sites other than this one. Even the Apple Support site has some pretty drawn out threads on it.

Good luck to all!

Hi,

I not completely sure that i have the yellow tint issue.
Can you guys please check on the picture below?.

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/3576/mg2354.jpg

The yellow is totally there. Although if you don't mind it much, and if it does not get much worse, and you don't do graphics related work, I recommend that you keep it...

Kristine's screen is probably the best case for subtle yellowing that I have seen in photos.

Unbelievable... this just gets worse every day! Now Im seeing at least a half a dozen dead pixels, in iSight.

Okay I was on the fence yesterday, "is it yellow... well sort of..." like I said I couldn't tell so much until I changed my desktop to a solid color (gray) then it was very obvious. Then I checked for dead pixels, again, at first I didn't see any at all, then I opened Photo Booth, blocked the camera with a black cloth - then I zoomed (Ctrl + Mouse Gesture ↑) Wow! Lots of dead pixels.

I ordered my (week 50) iMac 27" i7 online. I see so many people returning/exchanging only to be replaced with a new iMac with the same problems. I really love my iMac and I don't want it to be broken but... it is. Everyday I seem to find more problems. I don't want my money back, I want what I payed for, is that asking too much?

The yellow is totally there.

Surely this is a joke????
Look at the individual bands of gray on that image. All of them have different shades within the same panel. The one on top right is twice as dark on its right side than it is on its left, yet it's meant to be a comparison for the bottom panel?
If this is a level of "testing" people are using before taking machines back, it would be laughable if it wasn't so sad.
Extraordinary too that people can't believe the evidence of their own eyes and have to ask others to tell them what they see, via an inaccurate photo. No wonder Apple doesn't take this stuff seriously.
