I was really looking forward to this new mac but these problems have kept me from buying my first mac. So, I decided to go with a refurb 24" 2.66ghz, 4gb ram iMac! I am so stoked! I wish it was a new one, but ahh well!

maybe some screens do have this issue but how many people are whipping themselves up into a frenzy when they have perfectly good screens?

Exactly. It is important to avoid the possibility of being caught up in the never-happy world of the fanatics.

certain people in this thread make me realise why..

1/ Apple have the greatest customer satisfaction rates in the industry.

&

2/ Why the figure should be totally disregarded..!

Unbelievable... this just gets worse every day! Now Im seeing at least a half a dozen dead pixels, in iSight.
Today my 27" screen is flickering badly, that's the last straw for me. All I can say is "buyer beware" pay close attention to your new iMac because it can be a gradual degradation.

Now I'm wondering will Apple be able to fix all of these problems? If Apple cant give me what I paid for Ill wait another year or two until they get it right. I'm disappointed.

This is complete bull crap. Sure there can be fanatics, but they tend to take the side of "Apple can do no wrong, people who complain are liars or idiots."

I am on my second iMac, and this one has a worse screen than the last one, and a louder hard drive that has a constant buzz/hum. This is a 2000 dollar machine. Do you realize what 2000 dollars buys you on the PC side? And don't give me that "oh but it's a PC" drivel, they use the same hardware (or much better on the PC side actually, if you build yourself. Which is EASY to do).

These are machines bought at an absolute premium price, and Apple is essentially giving us complete junk. It is insulting, and it reflects EXTREMELY poorly on Apple. This kind of stuff really needs to hit the tech sites in a bigger way, as they should not be allowed to keep shipping crap iMac's.

My second unit will go back to the store soon, and this time I will be getting a refund. If the machines actually worked correctly, they would be great. But I do not believe that people are getting good screens, even the ones that think they do. I say post a picture and prove it, and that includes you. And also, quit calling out people who have bad machines as nut jobs. I am far from anal about these things, I could live with "imperfections", but this is just junk.

No one understands the effect of these defects on a company more than Apple. I completely agree with you that this is just not a few fanboys freaking out over some faulty screens, this is a SERIOUS issue. But at the same time, I HIGHLY doubt Apple would have sold these units if they knew beforehand that they were faulty. I don't think it reflects negatively on Apple at all either. If Apple is fixing the problem and/or replacing units then what else do you want?

I will give Apple this...their Applecare service has been great. Great support on the phone and in store. They made my first exchange very easy and fast, and said if I don't like this one just bring it back, and they understand. The guy even gave me his card and was obviously quite knowledgeable.

As far as what Apple could do? If they want to fix it and minimize bad press, just say the machines are on "back order" and get the issues resolved immediately. Of course that hurts your "sales" during the christmas season, so I imagine that's what it's all about. But, this has been going on since the machines started shipping, and it is nearly 2010. Then again, they really haven't gotten much bad press, compared to what they deserve, so who knows? Maybe they are doing this the best way possible. Though I imagine if this were MS shipping these kinds of machines it would be all over the place. You know what I mean? So not sure what's up with the double standard.

But how can this not reflect negatively on Apple as a whole? Their machines used to stand for absolute quality, and now their machines are kind of junky. The Mac Pro was underpowered for the price the day it was released, and playing a simple mp3 STILL kills it. Think about that. The iMac's are junk right now. And the laptops are decent, but lack features and have pretty low resolution screens for their sizes. They've really turned more into a consumer electronics company, than a serious computer company.

I just think we have reached a disappointing time in Apple's history, disregarding their ridiculous profits (but that ties into their quality issues so...)

Ok! Update! The upper right corner of my iMac has turned PINK. It now goes from pink in the upper right, to normal in the rest of the top half, to yellow on the bottom. It was NOT like this yesterday. I specifically checked the upper right corner when I first got this one, as my first one was blue and it annoyed the heck out of me. I am so getting a refund, this is absurd.

Why is it that the monitors can't even stay one color, even if its bad? This is atrocious.

Everyone, I'll appreciate it if you could keep the discussion exclusive to this screen issue here (and not about flickering, HD noise or other problems). And please, no PC discussion if possible. This is a display issue. You can talk about your experiences with your other displays (any brand really) but it makes little sense to talk about operating systems. I think most of us are probably only interested in OS X anyway.

You can (and should) discuss about your experiences with Apple and Apple Stores about the issue, of course.

Well I see the new iMacs are still shipping... so I guess that means Apple has fixed all the problems right?

You hit the nail on the head with that one! Thats exactly what's going on with these screens. Apple will continue to work on a fix for the problem, but until then, they will still sell these units. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't hear an official response from Apple until after Jan 1, 2010.

Every company has it's ups and downs with some products, it's how Apple handles the situation that really dictates the impact this will have on its reputation. It sucks that your new iMac has a bunk screen, I really wanted one of those myself. Hopefully they get this fixed, and you can get yours fixed as well.

Apple have such a small install base (%) that these issues could go on for ages without really being big news.

I suspect that Apple ARE knowingly selling faulty machines, just to get the cash in for this quarter and will then attempt to fix it in the new year.

but... truth is..... these are cheaply made and assembled computers in China. Using standard parts to give Apple their ridiculous margins....

the only way Apple will fix this quickly ..or think twice about doing it again..is if you guys... the apple buying public........

stop buying...

if they are doing this ( we both think that) then it is highly illegal in most EU states.

mind you Apple have never considered EU law important.

wish Ms Kroes would look at it....

Apple are a nickel and dime company..in more ways than one.

this is all about cash and to hell with the customers.

Microsoft does the same thing with the xbox 360. I am on my 4th one now!

Anyone answer me why I seem to be able to perceive the yellow tinge when looking at the Test page, yet I put a full screen of white up and all seems fine?

Oh the irony if if was all just an optical illusion where by certain combinations of colours trick the mind into seeing a colour/hue that isn't actually there (I'm joking before you all jump on me)

Bad eyes? Who knows.

Even though you say your suggestion is a joke, it cant be true because you can easily cut things out of a screen shot and compare them side by side. Plus people have compared several other macs and screens next to the iMac, and the iMac is the only one who is off.

I have NOT called people who have bad machines nut jobs. Indeed, I've mentioned that I've returned two faulty iMacs myself and agreed that of course people should return malfunctioning items. If you haven't the wherewithal to read properly, I wonder how you operate a computer at all.

Rather, I have called people who keep telling people who are happy with their machines that they should NOT be happy, nut jobs. And they are. According to those fools, if I say my iMac does not have a yellowing problem, I must either be not noticing it, or not being demanding enough, or lying, in which case I must produce photographic evidence!
They tell us not to buy because, as they have a faulty unit, everyone else will get a faulty unit too. They have not one iota of information about what the problem is, how widespread it is, or what the remedy might be. Yet they present themselves as knowledgeable and they pontificate about all machines being like theirs and how people should wait tlll the next revision. To cover all their bases, they are telling people that if they don't have a problem now, they will have one soon. This is despite many people saying they have iMacs with no problems. But the doom merchants know better.

I hope your own screen problems are resolved and that you take little notice of those who would have you believe there aren't good Macs out there.

PS: Do you REALLY think that when reviews for, say, a hard drive appears on the Apple Store site, competitors do not have negative reviews placed there, to bring down their competitors' star ratings? I can assure you the same thing happens here. There are those with an agenda that is fueled by the marketing tactics of the day, and infiltrating sites like this is nothing new, nothing surprising and nothing difficult. I've sat in marketing meetings when people were put in charge of such activities. This yellow tinge business is particularly fertile soil for development!

Week 40. Got it two days ago. Was going to keep it until I saw how many dead pixels my iSight has.

My iSight have 5 but I'm going to ask them to repair the iSight only since there is a HUGE POSSIBILITY that the replacement has worse screen than the current one. I'm keeping my week 49 i7, no other known issues, really not bad. It has only a slight yellowish tinge if I'm really meant to find it, otherwise, alright.

Warm Tint on the Bottom of iMac

I think I just figured this one out...
See it has to do with the size of the screen and the red shift from the light coming from the top of the screen due to the increased distance the light has to travel to reach the viewer. The only problem is that the calculations were started in meters and finished in inches, causing the unbalanced light color on the screen...
The fix of course is to recalculate the light color using the correct formulas...
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Many of you are getting way off-topic. Can you please respect the OP's request to stay on target?

I bought my first 21.5" iMac from BestBuy on Black Friday. I noticed the yellow tinge on the lower right of the screen right away after setting it up. I searched for the yellow tinge issue and I found this thread. My second unit was yellow too and with a few dead pixels. And, the third one was yellow as well. :mad:

1st = week 48
2nd = week 46
3rd = week 47

Then I decided to give Apple support a call, and the call quickly escalated to a supervisor. He was very friendly, and he asked me to bring the bad unit to Apple store for an exchange instead of BestBuy. He seems very confident that the unit which I was going to get from the Apple store will not have the yellow tinge issue. So I did go to the Apple store yesterday to get an exchange. The store manager he himself processed my exchange. Since I didn't have lucks with all the previous 3 units, I didn't have high hope of the new unit either. So I requested him to let me inspect the new unit. To my surprise, it's a very pretty unit indeed. Wow, no yellow tinge and no dead pixels! Awesome! At that very moment, I was curious of which production week the new unit was, but to my even bigger surprise, it's a week 40 unit!!! Kind of stranger, I was expecting the new unit to be at least week 45 onwards, but the store manager assured me that it is a brand new unit.

I inspected a few store demo 21.5" and 27" units, and I found that all of them do not have color inconsistency issue and all of them were week 41 units.

Have been using the new unit for 2 days now, and ... so far so good. :D

That's actually not much of a surprise as we have had many reports of week 40/41 units being the least affected with this color consistency issue. Kristen's new iMac was a week 40 and the yellowing started to show (though very so slightly) after a few days of use. There were at least two other reports of a week 41 iMac owner being free of the issue.

Keep us posted on yours. Maybe Apple is trying to give customers who have a problem with the issue week 40/41 units. If they seemd so sure then this is likely the case.

Im going to check the iMacs at Futureshop by my house to see if they have the problem. I never noticed anything before when I was there. Can you notice the yellow tinge on a blank white page?

Remember to check their serial numbers so you know which week they came from. And yes you can notice it in a white page. Some of us noticed the problem from a white page like a blank TextEdit file, a grey page like this forum, or the finder window. It usually starts from the middle towards the bottom of the screen. Just drag the finder window downwards and see if the color clearly shifts in color.

You can try using the test here provided on the first page, which makes the yellowing to appear more obvious.

Personally, I could see it looking at the snow leopard background. But just to be sure you should try using white to grey colors.

Will do man. They have a 21.5 and a 27 on display, they are turned on for the entire day so if they have the problem, it should be visible by now. I'll report back tomorrow.
