maybe some screens do have this issue but how many people are whipping themselves up into a frenzy when they have perfectly good screens?
Today my 27" screen is flickering badly, that's the last straw for me. All I can say is "buyer beware" pay close attention to your new iMac because it can be a gradual degradation.Unbelievable... this just gets worse every day! Now Im seeing at least a half a dozen dead pixels, in iSight.
Exactly. It is important to avoid the possibility of being caught up in the never-happy world of the fanatics.
This is complete bull crap. Sure there can be fanatics, but they tend to take the side of "Apple can do no wrong, people who complain are liars or idiots."
I am on my second iMac, and this one has a worse screen than the last one, and a louder hard drive that has a constant buzz/hum. This is a 2000 dollar machine. Do you realize what 2000 dollars buys you on the PC side? And don't give me that "oh but it's a PC" drivel, they use the same hardware (or much better on the PC side actually, if you build yourself. Which is EASY to do).
These are machines bought at an absolute premium price, and Apple is essentially give us complete junk. It is insulting, and it reflects EXTREMELY poorly on Apple. This kind of stuff really needs to hit the tech sites in a bigger way, as they should not be allowed to keep shipping crap iMac's.
My second unit will go back to the store soon, and this time I will be getting a refund. If the machines actually worked correctly, they would be great. But I do not believe that people are getting good screens, even the ones that think they do. I say post a picture and prove it, and that includes you. And also, quit calling out people who have bad machines as nut jobs. I am far from anal about these things, I could live with "imperfections", but this is just junk.
No one understands the effect of these defects on a company more than Apple. I completely agree with you that this is just not a few fanboys freaking out over some faulty screens, this is a SERIOUS issue. But at the same time, I HIGHLY doubt Apple would have sold these units if they knew beforehand that they were faulty. I don't think it reflects negatively on Apple at all either. If Apple is fixing the problem and/or replacing units then what else do you want?
I will give Apple this...their Applecare service has been great. Great support on the phone and in store. They made my first exchange very easy and fast, and said if I don't like this one just bring it back, and they understand. The guy even gave me his card and was obviously quite knowledgeable.
As far as what Apple could do? If they want to fix it and minimize bad press, just say the machines are on "back order" and get the issues resolved immediately. Of course that hurts your "sales" during the christmas season, so I imagine that's what it's all about. But, this has been going on since the machines started shipping, and it is nearly 2010. Then again, they really haven't gotten much bad press, compared to what they deserve, so who knows? Maybe they are doing this the best way possible. Though I imagine if this were MS shipping these kinds of machines it would be all over the place. You know what I mean? So not sure what's up with the double standard.
But how can this not reflect negatively on Apple as a whole? Their machines used to stand for absolute quality, and now their machines are kind of junky. The Mac Pro was underpowered for the price the day it was released, and playing a simple mp3 STILL kills it. Think about that. The iMac's are junk right now. And the laptops are decent, but lack features and have pretty low resolution screens for their sizes. They've really turned more into a consumer electronics company, than a serious computer company.
I just think we have reached a disappointing time in Apple's history, disregarding their ridiculous profits (but that ties into their quality issues so...)
You hit the nail on the head with that one! Thats exactly what's going on with these screens. Apple will continue to work on a fix for the problem, but until then, they will still sell these units. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't hear an official response from Apple until after Jan 1, 2010.

if they are doing this ( we both think that) then it is highly illegal in most EU states.
mind you Apple have never considered EU law important.
wish Ms Kroes would look at it....
Anyone answer me why I seem to be able to perceive the yellow tinge when looking at the Test page, yet I put a full screen of white up and all seems fine?
Oh the irony if if was all just an optical illusion where by certain combinations of colours trick the mind into seeing a colour/hue that isn't actually there (I'm joking before you all jump on me)

Week 40. Got it two days ago. Was going to keep it until I saw how many dead pixels my iSight has.
I bought my first 21.5" iMac from BestBuy on Black Friday. I noticed the yellow tinge on the lower right of the screen right away after setting it up. I searched for the yellow tinge issue and I found this thread. My second unit was yellow too and with a few dead pixels. And, the third one was yellow as well.
1st = week 48
2nd = week 46
3rd = week 47
Then I decided to give Apple support a call, and the call quickly escalated to a supervisor. He was very friendly, and he asked me to bring the bad unit to Apple store for an exchange instead of BestBuy. He seems very confident that the unit which I was going to get from the Apple store will not have the yellow tinge issue. So I did go to the Apple store yesterday to get an exchange. The store manager he himself processed my exchange. Since I didn't have lucks with all the previous 3 units, I didn't have high hope of the new unit either. So I requested him to let me inspect the new unit. To my surprise, it's a very pretty unit indeed. Wow, no yellow tinge and no dead pixels! Awesome! At that very moment, I was curious of which production week the new unit was, but to my even bigger surprise, it's a week 40 unit!!! Kind of stranger, I was expecting the new unit to be at least week 45 onwards, but the store manager assured me that it is a brand new unit.
I inspected a few store demo 21.5" and 27" units, and I found that all of them do not have color inconsistency issue and all of them were week 41 units.
Have been using the new unit for 2 days now, and ... so far so good.![]()
Im going to check the iMacs at Futureshop by my house to see if they have the problem. I never noticed anything before when I was there. Can you notice the yellow tinge on a blank white page?
Remember to check their serial numbers so you know which week they came from. And yes you can notice it in a white page. Some of us noticed the problem from a white page like a blank TextEdit file, a grey page like this forum, or the finder window. It usually starts from the middle towards the bottom of the screen. Just drag the finder window downwards and see if the color clearly shifts in color.
You can try using the test here provided on the first page, which makes the yellowing to appear more obvious.
Personally, I could see it looking at the snow leopard background. But just to be sure you should try using white to grey colors.
