Has anyone who has had cause to remove the glass taken the opportunity to check for the presence/degree of yellowing when the glass is absent?

People have had their displays replaced, using the same glass, and the yellow tinge had a different pattern. This is a backlighting or LCD panel issue and has nothing to do with the glass.

Sadly, I just sent mine back, Apple paid for everything, no restocking, no shipping fees. I did have to drop it off a a FedEx Center though, no big deal.

I'm going to do so too But I'm not sure if I need to pay for the shipping and a box like I did when I returned my Dell laptop.

Could you please tell me more details about the returning processes?

Thanks

I'm going to return mine. I'm holding it til I have finished my software project, probably another 2 days.

I also called and asked Apple rep if I could upgrade my 21.5 3.33ghz CPU and ATI 4670 with 4 GB of Ram to i7 model and they said I could :) Apple rep told me to pay extra for $320 for getting the i5 model and $500 for i7, which 's the educational price (I'm a graduate student at GA Tech)

I'm a software engineer and my jobs really depend on very powerful computers (running multiple servers, and some required-powerful-computer software applications at the same time). I just realized that my custom C2D iMac 21.5 could be unable to handle my performance needs (it is slow sometimes)

any advice for i5 or i7 owners, (Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or System Engineering or whoever whose daily uses depends on powerful computers like me) about which model I should upgrade? or just upgrade another 4GB of RAM into my 21.5 (cost me only $99) would be enough?

Seriously, pay another $320 and you get i5 CPU, extra 5.5 inches more space of the display and better GPU (ATI 4850) !!! What a deal?

one more question, if i get i7 model What do you guys think of how long or how many years this model can serve me in term of performance only (not to consider the hardware issue) before buying another new computer to catch up the future technology? I sometimes like to buy the topmost spec available for that model so I dont need to buy the new computer to upgrade often. My old Acer laptop just died on me few months ago after having served me well about 6 years without any problem (I spilled some coke on them, stupid me!! and the cost of repairing is about $300,. So good bye my old friend)

I bought 21.5 model at the moment because I have a limited space in my room (I'm living in my university's apartment) and i already have my Samsung 46 inches HDTV in my room, which is often used to connect my laptop to display the laptop screen on my HDTV. So I went for 21.5 with the topmost model available

I also got my i7 laptop CPU 820QM, 6GB of Ram, ATI 4670 1 GB from Dell , model SXPS 1645 at the same time as this iMac. It seems that my laptop is lot more powerful than this iMac and sometimes it irritates me when I have to run them together.

Sorry for writing too much. Please give me some advices

Thanks

surely you kept the box??

i always keep my boxes until the products are out of warranty

You meant the shipping box (brown one)or the the iMac package box (white one)?

For the first one I didnt keep it, for the latter one I still have it.

Thanks

This issue doesn't seem to be affecting the 21.5" imacs as much as the 27" imac. Correct?

I am in my 4th change of the basic 21.5". All of them had the yellow tinge. From 42, 43 and 48 week.:(

This is my first and last apple computer.

Dude, that's ridiculous. Obviously you're not going to get a good one until Apple comes out with a decent fix -- there's just no sense in going through that many exchanges. Just hang on to the one you have and get it fixed when we're sure the issue's been diagnosed and a fix devised. I'm on my third Core i7 iMac -- first one flickered, second one had baaaad yellow tinge, and the current one has yellow tinge but it's tolerable until I know there's a fix -- but I'm confident that Apple will make it right in the end. Until then, I'll enjoy the iMac I have right now.

Well said. My sentiments exactly. Patience

but the only fix would be a new screen or new computer.. looking at stories about the 24" ACD.... they had yellow tinges at the start and still do!!

Go crazy and give Apple a call? Or the store you bought it from?

I just bought my very first Mac this monday, an iMac 21.5-inch: 3.06GHz (500 500GB hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics), and the day I bought it I started to find the articles about the yellow screen. Boo! I did a test, and sure enough, my monitor has the dreaded yellow tinge.

I seem to have the problem, and would like to return it for a new product within my 30-day no questions asked return period. According to the serial number, it was manufactured during Week 43, and it sounds like I should be looking for Week 41. I purchased the computer through a third-party vendor (Microcenter).

For those of you who have returned, do you recommend calling Apple and seeing if you can get it replaced through there, or do you recommend going through Microcenter and doing a clean swap, preferably with a unit from Week 41? Or is there another manufacture week that seems to be generally clean?

yellow tint

iMac 27 inch i7, 8gb - production week 51
Purchased on december 28 at MacMe (local Premium Reseller) in Groningen, The Netherlands.

I had to wait for half an hour in the store so the tech support guy could determine if there was a problem with my imac (he tried updating etc.). He didn't see the yellow tint, but I refused to take it back because the yellow tint is so obvious I can't color correct in Photoshop.

Fortunately I already contacted the dutch Apple helpdesk by phone, so I had a casenumber. The guy from the Apple helpdesk confirmed it is a widespread issue, calling it 'yellow tint issue' (in english, rest of conversation was in dutch). He told me within a few minutes I should bring it back for repair.

Eventually the tech support guy at the store took my imac back and they'll send it to apple.

If I get another imac with the yellow tint issue, I want a refund. I'll buy another one online so I don't have to drag the machine from/to the store and get horrible service again.

week 45 27 inch imac yellow tint problem here

Very unfortunate, I love this computer, this SUCKS, waited for my 27 inch quad core imac and now when they finally work this out I will be waiting AGAIN.... NOT GOOD :( I guess the Microsoft is full of problems and we don't have any is crumbling faster than you can say Windows 7 :(

The problem doesn't appear to be just a yellow tinge, but rather an undersaturated (in the bottom right) and oversaturated (top left) blue channel set off by the display. To add insult to injury, calibrating the display only worsened this on my screen!

I don't know what to say, so I'll let the photos do the talking. Excuse the image sizes, any way to make them smaller but hotlinked?

I have received my 8th Imac today (Yes 7 exchanges...) week 52. No yellow (so far) quiet 2T Hitachi drive and no flickering screen (so far).

Don't give up good machines exist.

It looks like, after calibrating, the screen is set darker. This may pronounce the yellow tinge more. There's also quite a difference between #2 and #3 (#3 has more yellow). Could be because the iMac was on for a longer time? I have noticed that when I turn off my iMac for a night or so, the yellow tinge is less visible when I turn it on again. But after a short while, the yellow tinge becomes more visible.

By the way, I noticed that Lightroom 3 beta runs on all 4 cores.

Good lord man, who's got the time for that? I assume that you have an Apple Store nearby -- there's no way you could've possibly shipped that many computers back and forth!

Read the first post here...that's how I do it. Good pictures by the way; they show the problem really well.

FWIW, you have a good point -- my second iMac with the yellow tinge, which is much improved from the first, but by no means perfect -- isn't really "less yellow" than the first, it's "less blue" in the top left corner. In other words, the gradient isn't as pronounced.

Just got the 27' imac a couple days ago but I am having to return it, there ia a stuck pixel in the middle of the screen. Mines is a week 51 and there is a very weak yellow tinge in the bottom right corner its not very noticeable but the rest of the screen shows white very well. I will update once I get back from the store.

I bought my iMac 27 i7 a week before Christmas, respectively that's when it was delivered from Apple UK. Production week is 51 and unfortunately it has the yellow tinge problem, too.

I called the Apple Store yesterday and the support guy said they've had similar problems before. He offered a replacement or refund but since he couldn't guarantee that the new one comes without the problem, I went for the refund option and am going to wait until Apple has fixed this issue once and for all.

I'm very disappointed as I've been waiting to buy an iMac for a long time and moreover got the Black Friday special price on the machine. If I decide to buy another one in a few weeks or months, the price will be noticeably higher because I can't get a discount and VAT rises to 17.5% on January 1 in the UK. I was hoping to get an online voucher or something but wasn't offered anything...
