For the hell of it, I took the test with my much-used iMag G5:

This screen has some magenta-yellowish tinge on the right side of it, but very subtle. It also has a white stripe along the bottom (some burn-in of some sort) and burn ins on the right and lower sides from much use. The shadow on the left side is just a result from camera.
I hadn't even noticed the magenta-yellowish tinge until after taking test.
My conclusion?

1. Tests with cameras are ********.
2. Macrumors members now have an over-stimulated awareness of lcd screen color un-uniformity-- too much for their own good.
3. Macrumors members would sooner attack screens for displaying yellow tinge than blue tinge. A lot of those screens look damn blue to me.

Your iMac G5 actually looks great... the problem with some of the pictures posted here illusrates is that there is a significant difference in the colorshifting (it looks to me). If your iMac has a similar problem then this could mean the yellowing isn't just limited to LEDs. Otherwise yeah I would not trust photos unless it shows a significant difference.

edit: It turns out the older iMacs have had this same issue before. Also I am not sure if they are IPS panels. I believe that LEDs are suppose to give consistent backlighting while IPS gives color consistency in very wide angles.

Samsung LNT4065F. Was supposed to be THE top LCD TV to get 3 years back. Well; I think Samsung lived up to its word! Apple clearly needs Sasmsung to make panels for their computers. Can't go wrong with korean engineering. Although there is a very, very slight yellow tinge at the top, right corner.

The bit that worries me is that in the first post someone took theirs apart and when they put it back together again the problem was gone...in other words if its perfect and I take it back together i might create the problem!

Although if it is a case of taking the screen apart and putting it back together to fix the problem then why on earth isn't there a how to and everyone doing this? Its not hard to lift up the glass with a sucker and move the LCD panel around if that would fix the problem....

I thought about that too: if it is possible to take care of it yourself by taking the screen apart, why don't we see other posts of people doing this? Either it is too complicated (and you may void your warranty) or the story is simply not true...

Ummmm, the panels in the iMac are made by LG Display which is a Korean company.

In fact, they're the second largest LCD maker after Samsung and are also based in Seoul.

Apples response?

I have the yellow tinge. I think i might return it. I was wondering if i can return the imac quad i7 (built to order) to the apple store or does it have to be returned through the mail?

Also, how would the apple store respond to this? Will they be skeptical about it and question you whether the yellow tinge is there or not? Is it a easy refund process?

BTO's are non-refundable. If it's defective they will exchange it. In your case, you're not happy with the screen anomalies so they will take it back for an exchange but you have to send it back the way you bought it, they will not allow returns of online purchases in the retail stores. In the situation with the 27" iMac Apple's been offering to refund people's money due to the shortages in the iMac's parts rather than making them wait. Some people are getting extra $$$ back, don't count on that. Not every customer gets the same offer.

But on the norm, a BTO can only be exchanged if defective, no refunds.

I was at the Apple store to find out if they had a yellow free screen iMac in stock. They answered that they knew nothing about this issue and treated me as if I did not know what I was talking about.

I decided to purchase at Future shop. I already returned the first iMac that had both the yellow screen and a noisy Super drive. I am returning this second one. It too has the yellow screen which is getting worse and also has an intermittent hard disk noise and a constant whistling sound when I play with the resolution.

Now I find that it is responding slower than yesterday.

I have no problems with getting a full refund or exchange from Future Shop, as long as I am within the 14 day money back period. From what others have reported, you should have no problems with returning your unit to the Apple Store.

What really? if they sent you a defective product, i would think you could return it for a full refund? can you direct me to a link where apple states this?

It seems people have been having no problem getting a refund? Not to mention, getting a whole new imac, while keeping the defective one until the new one is received?

Did you read the second half of my post before you responded? the first half was covering general knowledge of BTO returns. The second half specifically said that Apple was offering people their money back on the iMac due to a shortage of parts and they are not requiring customers to wait for an exchange. You cannot return custom built Macs for a refund. You can call Apple yourself, sorry, but I'm not searching for info. I, as well as many others here have to be told the same thing from Apple.

gotcha. thanks

gotcha. thanks

You can return a defective product. If someone tells you you can't be polite but very firm. Also, ask to speak with a supervisor -- they have more leeway than lower-level people. In general, be persistent. They cannot force you to buy a defective product.

would depend on the country, in more enlightened countries...

faulty = refund

end of story... BTO or no BTO.

Hey guys!

Could someone help me check my iMac-s screen? I do think it has the problem - built on the 2nd week, 21.5 inch, 1TB - but maybe I'm looking wrong at it. It's not a big thing, but it's spread al on the bottom half of the screen... So some help would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi, I had a build to order i5 with 2tb drive I ordered on apple.com.. I called and complained about the yellow tinge, they sent me a new one.. Called again once I had the same problem on the second machine, and requested a full refund. They were fine with that, I dropped off my iMac at Fedex, and a week later was credited the full amount. You can certainly get a full refund for your build to order machine, but you need to send it back to Apple and not take it to the Apple store. Frankly, that is better for two reasons:
1) You are describing the issue over the phone and not trying to get an Apple Genius in a bright apple store to see (or not see) the yellow tinge
2) You are not standing in line at Apple with a heavy iMac, you just drop it off at Fedex (I actually just drop mine off at the Fedex department of an Office Max store)...

Just a question,

If i have a faulty iMac and I order a replacement, will I be able to continue with the faulty one until the new arrives?

And how do I send the faulty one? do I have to pay sending fees and that stuff?

And what about apple care? I believe we then have to associate the new iMac with the AppleCare you bought for the faulty one, or does apple do that automatically?

Thanks

That's frustrating.
Nobody likes to be treated as if they're dumb.
I've gone to the local Apple store 4 times with possibility of buying the 27" iMac. But that thing seems to be Kryptonite to Apple staff. Not one person would come near it to help me. One time, I was asked to move away from it, as they were holding an in-store class and I was in their way...nevermind they were all sitting over 5 feet from the machine.
I get an employee discount from my company (not Apple), and really want to pull the trigger. Does anyone know if I buy online if you can do an in-store pick-up?

You won't be able to pick up at a store if you order online. You can make an appointment online to buy one at the store. If you want to have exclusive time with a staff member at the store, making an appointment is the way to go. It's great , you walk in the store at your appointment time, pass in front of the people that don't have appointments, find your genius and have undivided attention for an hour.

Just got a call from Applecare

I have a yellow mac (week 53 in the US) - top is bright white bottom is yellowish. I reported my defective screen 2 weeks ago. They told me they would call me in 3 weeks with a resolve. They called this evening. I guess they want to replace the LCD. I asked the agent how widespread this was. He said North America replacements were not that many at all and the list was quite small. I informed him the numbers of yellow screen I have seen reported were staggering and he replied with 'you can not believe everything you read on the internet'. I informed him it was the APPLE discussion page. He laughed and said he would schedule my appointment to replace the LCD.

Hmmm....

Just got off the phone, they told me the exact same thing!!!!

I will order my Imac from the phone in order to have the latest production week, might as well have all the chances on my side, and they will send my promised compensation, and then get it installed at my local Apple store.

They replied to my issue regarding yellowish screens with 'the issue has been resolved, they will replace the screen if any yellowish tint at your Apple store'.

Question.... Do you think that they could give that to you in writing?
