This is just so lame of Apple to be operating in this manner

I was assured last week on the that my replacement machine would be expedited and problem free.

Well one week later and there is no movement on the order.

So I call up executive relations and she tells me that my order will ship next week and that they are going to take extra care with my order.

Well that is great if they are going to ship me a machine that has no yellow.

What is bad is that it seems that Apple is still shipping defective screens and that complainers like me would only get a good screen because of a higher level of QC that my machine will go through. I don't know if it is BS or what.

What I do know is that this whole situation and the way Apple is treating customers is downright deceitful and dishonest.

Withholding information is not the way to treat customers and I sure hope this policy changes.

I just called them and they didn't offer me this but asked me to wait til Apple provides the solid fix, which is replacing its panel, in few weeks.

What should I do?

Well, I would suggest asking why they are discriminating against some customers who are in the exact same situation. Tell them to take it back and issue a full refund. This is the only way they will make amends and fix this problem. When things have been corrected, take the money and buy a defect -free one.

If anything, they will need more prodding; have your call escalated to someone with authority. Usually the lower levels are their first line and cant budge.

Can anyone tell me in a general sense how easy it is to detect this problem in a day to day usage? Because I can't tell if I have the problem or if my brain/eyes are playing a trick on me attempting to convince me that I have the problem. If I have the problem it's hardly noticeable. If I don't, then my eyes are doing as I described above. The pictures posted in the various posts aren't enough for me to determine if I have the problem.

Just have a look at the top and the bottom. People are doing it with a number of gray patterns, but uniform white background and medium brightness works best for me. Look at the DIFFERENCE, not the color.
Yellow tinge is really a deficiency of the blue (from the RGB monitor set). I did some experiments using Photoshop color gradient tool and what I could see as yellow tinge in the store was equivalent to 5% to 10% of progressing yellow, or 5% to 10% of the missing blue.
Remember also, there is NO perfectly uniform screen, but if it doesn't bug you, you probably don't have it. Also some people were reporting, that it changes with time.

Well, I called the Dutch apple support again today. I explained I don't trust this machine. The lady wouldn't enter the discussion that I received a refurbished iMac (week 51 model received in week 5). At tech support I explained that I either wanted my money back, or get a new one.

They are now sending me a new iMac, and I can keep my current one until the next one is here :) Hopefully an issue-free model!

Hi guys,

Sorry if this has been asked before.

But for users with the yellow tint problem, is this apparent from the start, or does it manifest after time?

Thanks

It's noticeable from the start but no one is actually sure if it worsens over time.

I have a 15" MacBook Pro I bought in 2007 and only noticed the slight yellow tinge on the right side after 2 years of use. But, it doesn't bother me and I believe it had it before.

I also noticed a slight yellow on my new MBP 13" I bought in September 2009. To tell you the truth it didn't bother me nor it will ever...it's very slight.

I just got the i5 iMac today with the same very slight yellow tinge but not noticeable unless you look for it. Being it with a bigger screen, I think people are noticing it more now.

Thanks for the reply. :D

I think I'm going to get a 21.5" iMac this weekend, sick of waiting for the new MBPs.

I've been wanting to switch from PC to Apple for the last three years and when I finally do...... Talk about timing... I purchase my very first iMac and it's defective (Yellow tinge and noisy DVD CD super drive).

I am now on my second defective iMac and will return for a complete refund. (Yellow tinge, and noisy hard drive).

I do not have the patience to go through six more defective iMacs.

I now have to use a laptop with VISTA. That is a slap in the face.

I will purchase my iMac when Apple decides to build them right. I do not mind paying a premium for quality as long as that is what I get. I really am not impressed with the way Apple is treating their clients.

I'll be asking Apple to compensate me with an apple care plan with my purchase.

So that's why there are hardly any 27 inchers in the refurb store, they are being sold a second time as new. It wouldn't surprise me if that was actual legal in some strange way. Hope your next one is a winner!

Gah! Yes it is "normal" (in the sense that it's not uncommon).

I can post pictures of various LCDs that have casts in various locations. A while back I posted a review of a MacBook Pro 17" next to my 15" MacBook Pro. Here's an image from that review, clearly showing my two MacBook Pros together, and then the bottom and top of the 17" MacBook Pro, CLEARLY showing the cast difference.

I KNOW a cast is NORMAL, and I've had enough experience with various LCDs to know this:

The two laptops (15" and 17"(side by side, showing the cast difference:

Either you have had really bad luck with screens or I have had really great luck! :) All 3 of my screens in this house look way better than those!

In all fairness, if you are going to take a pic of a laptop screen, make sure the screen is not slanted back. The camera needs to be level/parallel with the panel. Both of those screens are on a tilt and that might explain why the 17" is lighter on top. However, it doesn't explain why the 15" has a light spot on the left side. (probably has more to do with the camera being centered on that side) Anyways, try to take the pics with the camera centered in the screen.

I hope someday you get to work on a screen that is more uniform!:D That's what the fuss is about, a cast that is not uniform. I agree with you that all screens have a cast. :)

Called again today, Apple's Relation agent, told me to wait till the 15 of february that is the only date witch the technicians, who are presentally working on the issue, will confirm and adress with apple tech on a possible firmware, fix, recall or parts replacement.

Thill then they have no concrete answer to give anyone, but to wait and try to work in collaboration with Apple to resolve the issue.

I am not one of them and will be returning for a full refund (6th Imac by the way) and will be contacted by Apple Relations when the problems will be fixed.

Plus compensation for my troubles!

Till then, sit back and enjoy your piss filled screens!

Yellow Honeycomb Patches

Have a new mac pro 17" laptop and 24" monitor - both display yellow honeycomb patches -as I'm new to this forum are there other members with this problem - I don't think this 'yellow' problem is just limited to 27" and 21.5" ownership".

Just recived my i7 replacement (week 05) and yellow tinge is here......Certainly less than the first model.....Now I don't know if change or keep it...

Hi everybody,

I received mine 27" on 22 December 2009, produced in week 50. Didn't notice anything from the very beginning, but after reading these forums made a thorough test and can confirm that the yellow tinge is there, lower part, gradually from left to right. It's not severe, but is now visible, if not progressing gradually.

I called the Austria Apple Support line this morning, but they didn't offer any replacement and advised to wait till Apple finds the resolution, which is according to them is yet not identified, for 2-3 weeks. Promised to create a ticket for me, but so far I don't have any proof of that (e-mail?).

It is extremely disappointing to get your first Mac defective, isn't it?

The actual laptop screens don't look that bad in real life. I under-exposed the images slightly to show the "problem" more easily. My point was to show that all screens have a cast of some sort, and not always a uniform cast, either.

I have a week 40 21.5" 3.06 iMac that had yellowing in the bottom right quadrant of the screen. Just a few weeks ago it started developing smudging marks in the top left of the screen. It kind of looked like a shadow on the LCD. I took it into the Apple store on Wednesday afternoon and the genius ordered a new LCD. Less than 24hrs later I had my iMac back with a new LCD that is PERFECT. No yellowing, no smudge marks, good even color, no backlight leaks, and no high-pitched noise. Just thought I'd let people know there is hope!

What graphic's card do you have ATI or Nvidia?

Do you have a ticking sound from the hard drive every 5 to 10 second?

Like if it was loading every time!

I just got a new Week 06 i7 -- yellowing is definitely there, but it's not really bad -- I didn't really notice it until I took the test. Not sure whether I should try for a replacement or not..

For the hell of it, I took the test with my much-used iMag G5:

MacRumorsYellowtest.jpg

This screen has some magenta-yellowish tinge on the right side of it, but very subtle. It also has a white stripe along the bottom (some burn-in of some sort) and burn ins on the right and lower sides from much use. The shadow on the left side is just a result from camera.
I hadn't even noticed the magenta-yellowish tinge until after taking test.
My conclusion?

1. Tests with cameras are ********.
2. Macrumors members now have an over-stimulated awareness of lcd screen color un-uniformity-- too much for their own good.
3. Macrumors members would sooner attack screens for displaying yellow tinge than blue tinge. A lot of those screens look damn blue to me.

Slight yellow tinge across entire bottom. Week 51 refurb. May be hard to see in screenshot. Click attachment and click agin to magnify.
Lol.

TMRaven,

It is a good point - to be honest ALL Apple screens have had this problem for years, but people are noticing it because of how big the 27" iMac is - that might not be a good thing but its the way it is.

I had this problem on my last Macbook Pro (the pre unibody) my new mid-2009 unibody is a lot better. Back then it annoyed me I was going to return it but i decided not to and I used it for two and half years and after the first 3 days i forgot all about it.

That being said ive just put the order in for the i7 iMac im worried it'll arrive yellow tinged, but im also worried it'll arrive perfect as im planning to crack it open to put in dual SSDs, extra ram and whatever else performance upgrades I can make.

The bit that worries me is that in the first post someone took theirs apart and when they put it back together again the problem was gone...in other words if its perfect and I take it back together i might create the problem!

Although if it is a case of taking the screen apart and putting it back together to fix the problem then why on earth isn't there a how to and everyone doing this? Its not hard to lift up the glass with a sucker and move the LCD panel around if that would fix the problem....

I must have been lucky with mine. Ordered it on Christmas day and got it on January 8th. I tried the test but can't see any yellow tinge, wife and son looked and they can't see anything either so I guess I can call myself lucky. I have the 27 inch iMac week 53

I just had a popup on my screen, it was an update for itunes and there was one for the display. I didn't take the display one because mine is fine but for some of you that are having problems, checkout the update.

21.5 mac with yellowing

Mine definitely has it, it's noticeable in the lower right portion of the screen even without doing that "bar test" (and more noticeable with the test). Playing with Lightroom I can see that the way I edit photos the portion of the screen that is affected won't be an issue, so I will sit on this for a while and see if I feel like doing anything. As I have the applecare plan I suppose I can wait and see if they finally figure this out before I do anything. The screen overall is gorgeous, though. Crisp, bright. My previous Apple cinema LCD had a slightly duller feel. And it is nice, having been on an underpowered macbook for three years, to finally have a really zippy machine...
