Surely someone so concerned about screen and image quality is willing to invest more than a miserable FORTY DOLLARS on a printer?

The reason is that I already have 2 printers in my house but they are not the wireless one. So, I think It would be better and more convenient if I got one with just $40. But if I have to pay $140, i would rather go back using my wired ones.

If so why are you still contemplating to send it back? If you think it's terrible then return it -- don't base your decision on the printer. Since you've got the rebate already, you'll just have to wait and see if they'll tell you to pay back the claim. Normally the rebate is separate from the warehouse side but just wait a few weeks.

Also, how did you get compensation? Apple Australia isn't offering any (at least the online store), but rather a "good will" Apple Store credit ~$100. So did you get it from a physical store?

I bought mine from Apple online Store. I dont know in my case, They just asked me themselves for the compensations. I got the 1TB External HD from my first replacement. but at that time I just asked them for some discount if I wanted to upgrade my HD to 2TB but they said they would give me one for free. I chose the external one since they told me that upgrading the internal one would slow the shipping. Got an iPod after having to bring my first replacement to Apple service provider to change a new LCD panel two time (Yep two). After changing the new LCD panel, the second one looked acceptable to me. However, just one day after taking it back to my house, my iMac just died, having power on but no sound and picture. Went with the 3rd replacement with $100 off. Now still got problems :(

I received my 27 i7 yesterday. Apart from fairly noticeable yellow tint in the bottom right, the iMac is perfect - ultra quiet, no dead pixels, no hard drive noise etc.

Would I be better off getting the screen replaced or a brand new replacement machine?

week 7 and week 11 imac 27

I have both week 7 and week 11 imac 27 now. Before I return one of them, please help me to determine what to do.

The week 7 one has a gray band near the bottom and it has yellow tinge near the lower right hand corner. The replacement week 11 one is yellow all over the screen (I tried to calibrate and it did not work well). The following pictures show both computers without any calibration. In the picture if both screens are shown, the one on the left is week 7.

Please help me to determine what to do. Return 7, 11, or both? Thank you very much in advance!

Time To Give Up and Wait.

I have had a very difficult time buying a 27" iMac i7 that has not had a screen with yellow tinge or a hardware issue.

Apple seems to have bailed on the "making it right for you" hugs and kisses type support.

My Three week 2010 i7 iMac purchase/replacement history is as follows.

#1 2/19 Ordered my new iMac. New Unit has yellow tinge. Returned

#2 3/1 Replacement Received. New Unit has Yellow tinge and documented hardware failure (Airport Card) returned.

#3 3/9 Replacement Received. New Unit Yellow tinge and another documented hardware failure (Airport Card) returned.

#4 3/15 Replacement Received. New Unit HAS Yellow tinge.

Today after 2 days of phone calls consuming 3+ hours of phone time.
A) Apple refuses to replace unit #4,
B) Offers visit to store for Genius Evaluation and possible screen replacement.
C) Offers refund with 6-8 week wait for check.

I have been relatively quiet and supportive to Apple's handling of the Yellow Tinge issue. Apple Support, has been fabulous, sympathetic, generous and helpful, even with today's disappointing no solution option.

I find it very unlikely that the Yellow Tinge has been fixed. Tier 2 customer service spoke with tech supervisor just ONE hour ago (1700 EST) who, according to her, told her that I would not be satisfied with any of the screens, as there is expected color variation that is not considered a defect and thus would not be replaced for a 5th time, although 2 of the times it was due to bad Airport Cards and Yellow Tinge.

So, Steve, if your out there, shoot me an email and tell me why do I have to accept a yellow tinged screen if the issue has been fixed?
And, even if I needed a break from the frustration and wanted to wait for the 1st revision, why would it take 6-8 weeks for me to receive a refund after I fill out forms from "legal"?

Will I go around dissing Apple, no.
Am I disappointed at the options? Yes.
All I want is a screen that does not look like it has had ginger-ale sprayed on it and dried.

Apple AU has agreed on a $100 store credit IF my replacement is problem-free, so meaning should I seek a refund they won't be dishing out the store credit but I think it really only applies on an individual basis. The compensation should be standardised worldwide, e.g. 15% refund from the purchase price (read about it somewhere).

Apple AU= Apple Aussie?

The left one looks alright but I can see the grey band at the bottom. The right one is very yellow, like someone said, a screen that's been p!ssed on... (that Simpsons Mapple episode?). If I had either of those I'd replace them -- get a refund and hold out for the next revision, unless you've got the time to send them back, wait, and do the whole process again.

yeah, Apple Australia :)

no way, you should be able to get a refund. the problem lies with them, not you. call them again and you should probably speak to a different person. by apple's return policy for defective products, let alone by law and legality reasons, they must take that back if there are problems. it's probably that particular person you're speaking to has got a million calls about this problem and got confused.

I haven't asked Apple about refund details but 6-8 weeks by cheque sounds ridiculous. Can they not credit it onto your credit card?

Further, going through your past posts, you yourself have returned iMacs over the "so called" tinge. Why is it that ever since you got an iMac that you consider tinge free that the problem no longer exists for anyone else in the universe. Further, if there were not one issue with the tinge affecting work or play, then why did you exchange your iMacs?

The only time I returned an iMac based on yellow tinge was when I contacted Apple after reading rubbish being spread here about the tinge supposedly appearing after time. I called and asked them if they'd had reports of any such thing happening.
They said not. They asked if I had any visible problems with the screen and I told them that if I looked for it, I could see a very slight yellowing at the very bottom of about the depth of the dock, visible from a high viewpoint, which didn't affect anything I did. Nevertheless, they said they would like to send me another unit, while keeping the other one for comparison, so I could choose to keep whichever I preferred. Superb service, I'd say.
I kept the newer one but the first one was perfectly good for any professional purpose I could ever put it to. I didn't demand an exchange and would have considered myself an imbecile if I had done so based on such a trifle.
Those who have unacceptable levels of yellow tinge are perfectly entitled to a better unit. But those who post photos here and say "I can't see any yellow tinge, so could you look at my pictures and tell me if I have any" have problems that require the attention of a medical site, not a computer one.

While I am happy with my current 27" iMac screen, I have just ordered a refurb i5. I just couldn't pass up paying the same amount for a quad core and a better graphics card. For the same price as a brand new base model.

If the refurb looks good I will just get a refund for the C2D base model. I will report what I find for screen quality when I get it... should be here on the 23rd.

...But those who post photos here and say "I can't see any yellow tinge, so could you look at my pictures and tell me if I have any"...

Sir Cecil, we may disagree on some things but I would have to agree that this type of question is kind of daft and sometimes clouds the issue.

WD vs Seagate HDs

Hi all

Does anyone know how common it is to have WD 1TB hard drives vs Seagate 1TB drives?

My first iMac had a Seagate (week 46) and it was terrible - very noisy when operating and random clicking noises.

My replacement week 53 had a WD and it was perfect, silent while operating and no clicking. But it still has a yellow tint so I want to replace it.

But I am worried about getting another Seagate drive as this for me is a really big deal - the difference seems significant.

Anyone know whether it is still a lottery or whether Apple are using one of the other in new machines coming off the production line?

Slightly off topic...

It seems to be a lottery on the 1TB HDD as it's been a mix between WD and Seagate from day 1, although it would appear that Seagate are the more common drive to be installed (this maybe also due to the fact more people post about the Seagate drive due to the rumble noise / clicking). Unfortunately you cannot request which drive you have.

As far a 2TB HDD it's always an Hitachi drive.

Hi,
I Just received my week 10 27" iMac i7 and it is virtually problem free. The screen is dang near perfect with no yellowing at all. There is also no grey band at the bottom of the screen. My temps for almost all operations are actually lower than my iMac 24" C2D. No scratched CD's or DVDs. The only small issue I can see is that I can hear the 1tb seagate drive in this machine. It is very slight, but I rarely hear the drive at all in my 24. I am super picky with this machine and was expecting problems. I think apple may have revamped the backlighting as I can dim this machine far more down than the earlier ones in the apple store. No matter the brightness, there is also no hum at all. I am extremely happy!

I take it back ... My hard drive crashed and the machine is going back to apple after two full days of restoring my system. What a PITA.

I am expecting my new iMac today so gonna see how that is.

The Apple Care advisor did advise me though that these problems ARE software related and not due to faulty screens, apparently they are working on a new update to fix this issue.

What if Apple never fix this issue? its not looking good if they knew about it last october. If you decided to keep your machine and expect them to fit a new screen later on after they fix the fault your taking a huge risk. they probably wont ever fully fix this and you will be stuck with a faulty iMac.

I went through 4 and applecare told me they will negotiate a big discount on a Mac Pro. Ive been using Apple for over 10 years... i'm sure they dont want to loose me to the PC market.

Return it for a refund, unless you want a yellow screen. Apple has not fixed this problem. The have "addressed" it and "put it behind them" by issuing an ultimatum to consumers.

You're now entitled to a ONE TIME screen repalcement. If you don't like it, return it for a refund or keep it and live with some yellow on your screen. There is nothing Apple can do to fix it as this is a defect inherent in the LED backlit technology that they are using. The patent itself reveals this.

People have had as many as 7 or so replacements which ALL came with varying degrees of yellow. Some more than others. Many just settle and accept the fact that they will have soem color inconsistency. They clearly ALL have some yellow.

So you either keep it with some yellow or return it. Thats it. period. Your choice.

What sort of big discount did they offer?

They have all sorts of reasons and excuses. Everyone has been told something different as to the cause. Apple CSRs have personally offered very different reasons as to why the screen are yellow. They also claim that its been fixed. Simply not true.

So one has a grey band and yellow, the other is yellow. So both are faulty. Return both and say if its not perfect you want a refund. I told them i want to claim for the money i lost taking time off work which would more than double the refund.

Why hasn't everyone just given up on iMacs? If you had a car that kept going wrong would you still buy another the same??????????

Very true, I have heard it been fixed, its a very rare problem blah blah blah, it's not true, this is not a rare problem im on my 4th and they are all exactly the same.:(

Has there been a similar problem with the 24" LED Cinema display? I was thinking of getting that with a Mac Pro.

After all the gloom and doom on the board, I was sure my screen would be bad, but so far so good as everything seems perfect with my 27" i7 machine I picked up yesterday.

That's not the experience I just had. You probably shouldn't speak in such absolute terms when you don't know what you are talking about.

I didn't have a great experience, but the situation isn't as bleak as you claim.

I did have to doggedly convince an Apple Care rep at one point about what my options were (and whether or not my screen was "normal" or not. So I can't recommend that people who want a smooth experience buy an iMac until they are shipping good ones at least 99% of the time (if ever). But you can get a good iMac if you are persistent enough.

...

Mine has a 1TB Seagate and it's the one and only thing I cannot complain about.
You do not hear it when it's just spinning. I does not make random screaking noises once every couple of hours (I have one of this kind in my PC....). You can not hear it while normal file access. You can hear the heads move if you run a program / diagnostic tool or collect a lot of file scattered all over the disk. But head moving noise is not very loud and absolutely normal. The one I have in office is much louder (did not check brand, it's a matter of how the HD is fixed and what case it is).

So, there are Seagates that are quiet.
