I remain convinced that the 21.5 inch iMacs have glass screens, even though, while tapping on my 24" right now, I agree that the resonance does sound "plasticky."

The IPS display on the 27" is riveting, and the LED lighting makes the color contrasts all-the-more vivid.

Until OLED gains the ability to produce greater pixel illumination, I see the IPS LCD remaining desirable for the next few years.

I have a matte screen 30" ACD which I love - however, the 27" iMac screen seems slightly more crisp, vivid, and provides more color contrast and saturation.

Matte screen covers are available for those who prefer matte - i personally appreciate the clarity of glossy, as reflections have not been a hinderance at all, while using the glossy iMac.

To each, his/her own.

Do you do any photo editing? What is your lighting situation and how are the reflections? Did you calibrate the monitor? Thanks.

Yes I do, using both Aperture and Adobe CS 4. I have overhead track lights, which don't shine directly into the monitors, and the sunlight streaming through the windows creates no problems at all.

For absolute color accuracy, the 30" ACD has a slight edge over the 24" iMac, which seems to have close to the same color fidelity, as it's also an 8-bit display, with a fairly decent dynamic range.

I calibrate the monitors, used for photo and media editing, on a weekly basis, using Supercal, which seems to work nearly as well as a hardware calibration device.

I'm looking forward to getting the i7 27" iMac in the spring, when, hopefully, a better graphic card option will be made available. I've been playing with one for the past two weeks, and it is stunning.

Apple needs to bring back production to the US and drop this Chinese manufacturing nonsense. It might mean higher prices, but the quality control was much better when Macs were made in California.

hear! hear! i couldn't agree more.

and help turn America back into a nation of PRODUCERS... not just consumptive craphounds!

I agree, though since Apple already gets a hell of a premium price for its products, it wouldn't necessarily have to raise prices. There's nothing in an apple computer but stock parts and pieces'n'parts it sources elsewhere. Apple is selling style, ergonomics and its operating system. The Mac Pro's, for example, are priced twice as high as a computer with similar spec's, and the higher end iMacs are at least $1000 higher than competitive products.

If there is some reason we should be sending our dollars to the PRC, I don't know what it is.

The problem I ran into even in my home office which I think has very good and controlled lighting was with indirect reflections of just light-colored objects in my room behind me. Even my own face was a problem when working on low-contrast and dark images. Instead of seeing the fine detail in dark gray areas, I was just seeing my reflection.

Hahahaha! So Much For Apple's Imac.
My faith won't be restored until they make some sort of public announcement about their massive short comings. They have lost me as a customer, especially considering the way they specifically bash Microsoft's shortcomings in advertisements, but then hide behind their own as if they don't exist. This crap filters all the way down to the employees at many Apple stores who believe Apple is as infallible as their adds say they are. That's weak Apple!

Hey look everyone, fresh troll!

LOL!

By the way, Laguna, you should update your avatar to use the Windows 7 flag.

Speaking of LOL, it's always hilarious to hear someone from the Windows camp (you know, the 95% majority) make cracks about sheep or mind control. Comedy gold!

As for the Windows 7 flag, meh - same old crap, different paint job. ;)

(Yes, I have (and use) Windows 7.)

My 27" arrived in pristine condition. Flawless (touch wood). Love it. Bad luck cracked folk. I'm sure your replacement will be like mine!

I'm not a huge Apple fan, but any sensible company would act like that. Heck, even Microsoft acts as if its infallible. Could you REALLY expect Apple to make an advert saying "no no, buy a PC, our macs suck"?

Come on, man. Think about it.

That's a good point you make. I would never expect Apple to come out and say, "our products suck, buy a PC." But I would like to hear them acknowledge these major quality control issues they are having and I'd like assurance that the problems will be fixed.

When you walk into an Apple store and have employees give you attitude when you tell them your machine is faulty, it kind of makes you wonder if this is the same attitude held at the top of the chain. Right now, it seems to me that buying a new iMac is too much of a gamble. I'll wait to get mine.

Major quality control issues? Do you have any idea the percentage of machines actually affected by this problem? Yeah, me neither.

As for "fixing" them - is Apple not replacing every single machine that shows up with a cracked screen? What else do you want, a bouquet of roses and an apologetic serenade?

And you think Apple isn't already scrambling to fix this problem? You think they like having to replace machines that arrive with cracked screens?

Good grief, try some common sense before posting.

Sidenote: I haven't noticed a "This device will die prematurely!" sticker on Xbox 360 boxes at the store, though they certainly warrant one. Wow those Microsoft people are smug b-holes, aren't they.

I'd imagine the cracked screen issue is a non-issue. Haven't there only been a handful of those? Flickering screens and yellow tinges seems to be more of a major problem.

Like you, I have no idea about the failure rate of the new iMacs. But when you here of multiple peeps on their 2nd and even 3rd replacement, it really makes you wonder. When you here of Best Buys not having any new iMacs on display because their floor models have problems, it really makes you wonder.

I'd like to think Apple is scrambling to fix these issues and when they do a new iMac will be in store for me.

What does the XBox 360 have to do with anything? Just curious, you keep bringing it up. Is it a piece of crap like the new iMac or something?

The Xbox 360 is the electronic piece of crap against which all electronic pieces of crap are measured. The Gold Standard of crap.

If the new iMac failure rate hits the 40-50% mark, then yes, the iMac will be a piece of crap at the level of the Xbox 360.

Cracked screen but perfect packaging

Add me to the list of those who got the iMac 27" i7 shipped with cracks in the lower left corner of the glass(?) screen cover. The shipping carton, both external and internal, showed no indication of damage all all, it had to be done at the factory. It's upsetting, but I was so excited about playing with the new machine that I refused to pack it up and send it back. I tried to locate a place to report the problem on the Apple support page, but couldn't find anything. I'm hoping that, after the backlog has been relieved, Apple will provide replacement screen covers.

You need to go back to school, it cracks because all of the pressure is being put in the corners during transit.

you got an Apple store nearby. take it there, no need to wait for any backlog to be relieved. the glass is the same glass that is used on the store models. if they don't have it in stock they can almost certainly order it.

Agreed, I think the shipping is screwing up the machines. It's enough that it's shipping all the way from China, but then to Alaska and other states before it ends up at the right destination. I don't like this and Apple needs to bring back production to the states. The customer's shouldn't end up with junk right after they get all excited about buying something new.

What about customers in Japan, in Europe, in Australia, Russia or China?

Apple ships them worldwide, so the box must be robust enough for any distance anyway.

Oh, I see: If someone in Moscow gets a DOA iMac, it is just a minor issue...
