Im surprised how many people have only ordered the 1TB fusion drive, my storage needs surpassed 1TB years ago. Why did you choose the 1TB option? For bootcamp compatibility? Storage on externals? Not much to store?

I have a home server and external when needed. No need keeping all that on one drive that could fail.

for exactly the bootcamp compatibility and really to save some money and still have that ssd speed boost, if I need more storage, which eventually I will, then ill get an external storage solution there's no point on getting big internal hard drives imo, the internals are meant for the OS and applications everything else can be stored on externals if needed.

So do you back up the data on your externals to other externals?

called for expedited shipping - added for free. bingo.
Asked if I could switch my magic mouse to a magic trackpad, they said would have to cancel order, I said no thanks, I'll just keep my current order.
Rep gave me the trackpad for free!! double bingo!

Its like Christmas or something!!! ;-)

DOUBLE BINGO TOO!!!!! Expedited delivery free of charge, magic trackpad free of charge. Thank you Apple! I guess all the iPhones, Macbook Pro's, and Apple TV's I ordered in the past payed off :D

Haha, that's awesome, I should give it a try. How did you go about it exactly?

Me: Hi,umm...I was curious, is it possible to change my order to expedited handling?
Apple: Let me see, yes it's possible.
Me: Do you know how much that would run?
Apple: Actually, I can do it for free today. Let me put you on hold while I take care of that.
Me: Awesome. thank you.
Apple: Ok, I have your expedited handling in. It will still take 2-3 weeks for the iMac to be available to ship. Anything else I can help with?
Me: Oh, yeah, I was wondering is it possible to change my order to a Magic Trackpad instead of the Magic Mouse? I was in a hurry trying to order today and realized I probably should have gotten the Magic Trackpad.
Apple: Hmm..you know I would have to cancel you order to do that but you know what, I'll just put it on there free of charge as a separate order.
Me: Wow, thank you so much. You guys are awesome.
Apple: Yes we know (just kidding, he didn't say that but he was super nice, mentioned who they were so busy today with all the iMac orders).

I just called apple service to ask for expedited delivery too...They said they wouldn't be shipping until 3-4 weeks and people won't be getting them until early January. Hope that's not right though. I really want this thing before Christmas

oh yeah. The person said they were all expedited anyways.

Couldn't make up my mind...

I went to the store (again) to size them up (again). Then I played around with all the different configurations, all of which are far more sophisticated than I need, but what I want is a different matter...

I finally think I struck a balance:

27-inch iMac
•3.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
•16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X8GB
•1TB Fusion Drive
•NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX 1GB GDDR5
•Magic Trackpad

Dispatched: 3 - 4 Weeks
Delivers 02 Jan, 2013 - 07 Jan, 2013

Which is fine by me!

:)

i7 / GeForce GTX 680MX / 768 SSD

Hello everyone,

I also frustratingly "tried" to get a better than EDU discount, but without success and in-turn lost time.....

But it's done and dusted now.
And so starts the long wait..... :D

I've got a -
Dispatches in 3-4 Weeks

Wow, I'm stunned at how the vast majority of people on this thread have opted for the $200 i7 upgrade. In researching the cost/benefit of each upgrade, the i7 vs i5 upgrade seemed the most controversial. Is everyone on this thread a hard core video/photo editor? Or is there a benefit to i7 that I'm missing? Or is it just an attempt to future proof your purchase?

Shipping times seem pretty stably pegged to Dec 24-31, so I can always change my config. But I haven't found a compelling reason to get an i7 processor, and instead stuck with the 3.2Ghz i5.

I'm a designer using many CS5/6 apps. Also infrequently use FCP. There are times when i7 would be beneficial for me, and like others stated, why skimp over $200 when you're paying so much anyway. Also a matter of wishing later that I had more juice, especially when taking the iMac to a video production with live recording and streaming.

Are expedited orders just an American thing? I couldn't see that option when ordering mine on the online UK store.

What exactly did you say when you called to get expedited delivery? I'm going to call when I'm off work and give it a shot.

I just said I would like to have it before Christmas and if there was a chance I could upgrade to expedited shipping. The gentleman then told me all iMacs leave the factory with standard shipping but they could expedite the delivery free of charge. Just be honest and tell them you want it faster and they will be happy to oblige :D

Ordered yesterday, UK Higher Ed pricing.

'Base' 27" (2.9GHz i5) plus 1TB Fusion Drive. Delivers 21 Dec - 2 Jan.

Will max out the RAM once it gets here - 32GB from Crucial is £120 at the moment, beats Apple's £460 with a big stick. Have a 3TB USB3 HD that I currently use with my MBP that'll cover most of my storage needs...
