new Atlona AT-DP400

Hi all, the new Atlona (Dual Link) DVI to Mini DisplayPort Converter (USB-Powered) AT-DP400 is out! It support resolutions up to 2560x1440.

But it says :
Note: For PS3 or Xbox users, you can use our converter without additional devices at only 720p. Make sure to set 720p prior connecting it to the DP400. Even Though DP400 is able to pass-though very high resolutions, the Xbox or PS3 users will only be able to view 720p because iMac 27" doesn't accept 1080i or 1080p.

would that device allow me to use the dvi-i out on my 5870" to pass a signal to my 27" imac? A direct connection still doesn't work does it?

Would have the advantage that i can hook up my xbox and blue-ray player as well, would it?

I suppose AT-DP400 does. If i'm not wrong, you can max out your DVI connections but not on Game consoles, which will remain at 720. For what i know on my PS3, it only has a maximum resolution of 1080. And for iMac is either 720 or 1440.

I thought that card has DisplayPort out? If so, just hook it up the iMac with a cheap DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable. No need to waste 200 bucks on an AT-DP400.

Audio

Hello,

I have been following this thread a lot and would like to thank you all for your contribution. I have just received my Dr Bott and it works well. Since you guys seem to know a lot about the setup, I have one question. Is it possible to have the sound of my PS3 come out from my external speakers instead of the iMac's built-in speakers? My speakers are studio monitors. The setup consists of my iMac connected to an audio interface by USB which is connected to the speakers by TRS cables.

On another note, I am about to test plugging my HD cable box to my setup to see if I can watch digital tv on the iMac. I will post the results soon enough.

Thanks to all for your help!

Thank you for posting this question. I also have studio monitors (connected to an M-audio Firewire 410). The possibility that I will be stuck with the internal speakers on the iMac is the only thing keeping me from ordering one of these, so I would also like to know. Anybody have any success with this?

OK, here are my results:

iMac Speaker: Works
iMac Headphone Jack: Works
Logitech USB Audio (i set it as default in sys prefs): FAIL, audio comes through iMac.

So in effect, the DP in is processed by the iMac's built in hardware only. Now regarding the iMac's optical audio out, I'm not sure but my gut tells me it might work.

I thought that the 5870 and the imac wouldn't work together for some obscure reason? Or has this issue been fixed?

After much considerations, reading and replies from Atlona. I found out there's no way to display PS3 and Xbox at 1080 on iMac 27. :( The maximum resolutions for PS3 and Xbox is at 1080, where iMac 27 only accepts 720 or 1440. And this was what Atlona support told me :
The dp400 will be capable of reaching the 2560x1440 resolution. You can use the dp200 without any converter or scaler but it will only show on 720p because it is single link. The dp400 will be compatible with the dual link of the 27 inch iMac’s. When using the ps3 there is no way of getting 1080p. It will automatically go to 720p even if you use a scaler with the dp400 or dp200.

Guess iMac 27 users will be stuck with 720 when connecting to Game consoles. Perhaps 24" Apple LED Cinema Display will be able to get 1080, cause 24" Apple LED Cinema Display has 1920x1200 resolution.

I have tried pretty much everything there is to try to get my studio monitors to output the sound of my PS3 via the iMac but nothing is working. However, I am guessing it is possible to do since it seems to work with other external speakers (non-usb)...

In the meantime, what if I connected the ps3 directly to the audio interface via S/PDIF? I am guessing that it would work. Would the PS3 use the HDMI's audio signal or the S/PDIF's?

ps3 set up for Imac

Hi everyone,

I just bought th imac 27 an d the dr bott and I cannot make it work with my ps3.
I tried with an other HDMI device and it worked.

I tried the 10 sec holding power button and I can see that my ps3 recognize my imac 27 as a screen( on my other monitor) but there's no way to make it work!!!!

What kind of set up do you have to input your ps3?

yep... i emailed them the other day. They said msrp is 200 for the dp400 but if your only plan was to play PS3, 360, Cable box, then you are better off getting the cheaper dp200 since it is the iMac that only allows for 720P or 1440P inputs.

What a major let down...

I too have a 27" imac and have been obsessing over this issue

So, where we stand as far as actually getting video from the source to the 27" screen is as follows (correct me if i'm mistaken at any point please).

Mini displayport outputting devices (I'd LOVE a list of these including digital antennas through other computers to dvd players and bluerays, etc): just run the mini displayport cable (male to male) from source to iMac. Does not support audio, so buy additional cable.

All other signal type devices: a signal converter (costing at least $150 for DVI or HDMI signals) is needed to convert non-mini display port signal. Sound works, but limited to stereo channels only. Only supports 720p until either: a) video output devices bump up to 1440p resolution or b) apple firmware updates to support 1080p.

Must the ENTIRE display of the 27" iMac be used as input or can we "window" the video input?

Guys, I haven't had chance to read back to see if this is relevant, but I found something on Engadget a while ago which looked to me like a dream come true...

http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/15/blu-ray-comes-to-the-imac-via-an-apogee-hdmi-to-mini-displayp/

Is anyone aware of this??

Yes. I think it is available to buy now if you google it and it should work. However, if you go back a couple of pages in this thread you will notice that quite a few people have bought a similar device called a Dr Bott Digital Video Link.

Or here - http://www.drbott.net/product/9598-DGVL/

This will allow you to play PS3 on your imac.

Here's a couple of clips of people using to play ps3 and xbox on an imac 27":

I think this is a good place to buy it from if you're in UK/Europe - http://www.duregexpress.de/index.php

Like what unamused has said... It will still be in 720. To me, I think Atlona DP200 will still be cheaper for international buyers, even if to purchase a Mini displayport to Mini displayport cable. And Atlona is USB powered. Ebay is selling Atlona DP200 at around US$109 with about $20 international shipping. Or maybe buying the Dr Bott at US$149 from Dr. Bott USA will be a good choice too. The Atlona DP400 has the support up to 1440. 720 for gaming and 1440 for future use. And i doubt Apple will even bother to or will update their firmware anytime soon. Yes... it's a major let down.....

Change the resolultion of your PS3 to 720p and try it. The imac only accepts 720 & 1440. This should be the fix

OK, after poking around, I figured out how to run the audio through any audio device you want. It turns out that the DP audio in is actually done by a tiny app running in the background. However, it doesn't obey the audio preferences because it is runninng as another user. So type this command in the terminal:

sudo -u _dpaudio /Applications/System\ Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System\ Preferences

Then hit enter. A copy of System Preferences will open up. Go straight to the audio section and select the output sound card you want to use. DO NOT TOUCH ANY OTHER SETTING, THESE ARE NOT YOUR USER SETTINGS. After, close the system prefs and the terminal and the audio should now output via the audio device you chose!

BTW, the DP input actually keeps a log! It's at /usr/libexec/dpd You can get to it from Console.app. It could be veeerryyy useful for troubleshooting.

Have you tested this with the Dr Bott Digital Video Link? It makes sense that this would work, but it would be nice to know that it has been tested and verified :)

Now things that we need, to play Xbox360/PS3 games on 1080P are
1.AT-DP400
2.Scaler (from 1080P to 1440P)

The problem is a scaler. There's no product like this. We have to wait until some company makes it...

But in the end....is it SO bad (I mean "I'd spend 200-400$ for a scaler"-BAD) to play ps3/x360 games at 720p? Doesn't look so bad in videos and close photos...

Yes, that is the device that I was using with my XBox set to digital stereo.
