The most frustrating is for those waiting an 27" iMac as the quiet removal gives no hint as to whether a replacement is coming. The Studio display does appear to just be the iMac 5K display in a new housing ( not sure if that's why they've removed the iMac from the website as they're diverting production to the Studio Display), but costing more than the 27" iMac!
I think this rumour is inaccurate. I think this will be the new 27” iMac

See, I would have believed that up until this week, but I would also have believed that the Mac Studio was going to replace the Mac Pro, and it doesn't. So they'll have the mini, Studio, Pro and iMac, and given that the vast majority of Macs are laptops, that's already quite a broad selection for Apple.
It's got nothing to do with believing me. It's about believing the most reliable Apple analysts in the world: Kuo and Gurman. Both have tweeted since that 27" iMac (Pro) is still coming. Apple also have an M1 iPad iPro and an M1 iPad Air. That's Apple for you. Like I say, 27" iMac will be their only 27" AIO. It's for the AIO market. It's a slightly different market to the build-your-own-setup crowd. Some people like AIO setup, some don't. But, again, it's not about my argument, the best analysts have said it's coming.

I can’t help you there. The two best Apple analysts in the world have said it’s coming.

You underestimate how many people value an AIO design. It may be counterintuitive to you, but having everything inside the display (even if you cannot upgrade it) is a selling point to many. I personally prefer it.

27” iMac will be Pro only now. Greedy Apple, but there ya go.
Pair a Mac Mini or Studio with the Studio Display — boom — no more complaints about the chin, and better for the environment. Not agreeing with their strategy doesn’t make them greedy.

Think MacFly — think!

They've been pretty good, but far from flawless. Gurman described the Mac Studio wrong. It's not a smaller Mac Pro, nor does it replace the Mac Pro; it's a bigger Mac mini. Gurman also correctly predicted the Jade C-Chop, Jade C-Die and Jade 2C-Die, but was wrong about the Jade 4C-Die.

And even if they were 100% accurate (they aren't): what does it matter? This isn't MacReportOfKuoAndGurman, it's MacRumors. Speculation is the entire point.

But, again, it's not about my argument, the best analysts have said it's coming.

Good for them.

It's difficult to understand who this would be aimed at.

Sure, they would sell some regardless but if you want a better display than the excellent Studio Display then surely you go for the ProDisplay XDR. I'm struggling to think of what kinds of customer can afford to spend more than $1,599 but won't spend $4,999.

Sure there's a big leap in pricing there, but having $1,599 and above to spend on a display above would usually put you squarely in the business and education market. If you need more than the Studio Display offers then I imagine you'd be eyeing the ProDisplay XDR jealously. For what kinds of customer is the Studio Display 'not enough' while the ProDisplay XDR is 'too much?'

I'm quite surprised Apple didn't instead come up with a 4K HDR 60Hz display, with power delivery and thunderbolt daisy-chaining for around the $999 mark instead. There surely has to be a bigger market for something like that over a Studio Display XDR. A pair of those and you have a dual-display, single-cable solution for $2,000. Everybody wins.

But then again, I don't understand how Apple can charge $400 for a piece of aluminium with a height-adjuster on it. Perhaps I'm just totally out of touch with reality.

The consumer monitor that Apple should have made already exists. 3840 x 2560 pixels!

Do you mean "put you squarely out of"?

Few businesses and educational institutions are going to spend more than $300 a piece on a display (heck, schools spend $300 on the entire computer). $1600 is already extremely premium. $5000 is niche.

This story makes a lot more sense to me if the Studio Display Pro kills the Pro Display XDR.

Another sign this might be happening: the nano-texture option, Pro Stand, and VESA Mount Adapter are $1000, $1000, and $200, respectively on the Pro XDR — but they're only $300, $400, and $zero on the Studio.

Sadly, I don't think they're interested in that market segment.

Nah. Most people won't buy this.

I may be an outlier, but I have not noticed a substantial improvement since the 27 imac went to 5K way back when. I have a maxed out Macbook Pro 16 Max (best computer I have ever owned by a longshot) and the display is great, but 27 iMac displays have been great for a long time. Real world, I never notice when switching back and forth. I will likely wait to see what replaces the Pro XDR (sent that one back) but my guess is we will use this entry level model. Really impressed by the little studio Ultra as well.

How would they include ProMotion? Thunderbolt 4 has only Displayport 1.4, thats not enough bandwidth for a 5k 120Hz display, you'd need Displayport 2.0. And that would need a new Thunderbolt version.

According to the spec "Thunderbolt 4 includes support for DisplayPort 2.0"

I have to admit, I really like the industrial design of the Huwai monitor. Finally, a company that has the good sense to place the connection ports where they belong - at the base of the monitor.
