Using compression will lead to image degradation, always. Especially with real time compression and decompression.
DSC is for huge signage displays and stuff, not when your face is inches away from the screen.

Mhmm, that would be a nice trick, but likely you could not transfer USB that way anymore? And it would be breaking so many standards, compatibility would be a huge issue, if even possible.
DSC is visually lossless, you can't notice it at all.
If only they had included HDMI 2.1 in the MB Pro and the new Mac Studio.
Why? They have TB4 and USB4 so they should be displayport 2.0 capable.

I like my XDR but I would like a second XDR-ish display that is 27" so that I can rotate it into portrait mode. You can't do that except with the Pro Stand which the Studio Display doesn't support. I really don't want to have to move to a VESA arm.
Another frustrating move by Apple. They offer a stand with height adjustment. But apparently, adding the ability to rotate the Studio Monitor to portrait mode was a bridge too far. For that, you have to buy the Pro XDR monitor.

I can't really figure out the marketing angle on this new "pro" product:

1. The Studio Display is already targeted at professionals. Go see the unveiling. They didn't show a single use case of this product in a consumer setting. It's highly unlikely they are creating yet another professional tier above the Studio Display.

1B. The Studio Display is $2000 with the ergo stand. That's amongst the most expensive monitors around. Mini-LED + Promotion would add a significant amount to the cost. What's the market for a 27-inch non-reference monitor that cost $2500-4000?

2. It's weird that they would create another product in the exact same size class, especially for such a niche product.

3. It's unlikely they would introduce two very similar products only 3 months apart, especially when this new Studio Display is already back-ordered by 3-4 weeks. Apple's usual MO is to milk a new product as long as they can before introducing an upgrade.

4. They are already struggling to make enough mini-LEDs for the iPad Pros: it's only on the 12.9" version so far due to production issues (per rumors). Why would they dedicate the production capacity to a super niche product like a second Studio display?

5. There's no way they would make their $5000 top-of-the-line monitor obsolete with a new model at fraction of the cost. Who would buy the XDR when you get better technology in this Studio Pro? Most would wait to get this technology in the 6k size. If anything, Apple would bring mini-LED and Pro-motion to the XDR before they introduce the 27" with these technologies. (I'm not talking about the technical feasibility, but rather about the marketing aspect.)

The most frustrating is for those waiting an 27" iMac as the quiet removal gives no hint as to whether a replacement is coming. The Studio display does appear to just be the iMac 5K display in a new housing ( not sure if that's why they've removed the iMac from the website as they're diverting production to the Studio Display), but costing more than the 27" iMac!

It's not coming.

Yeah, he's almost certainly wrong - anyone with some common sense can see this. (These analysts seem to lack it)

What would be the benefit of miniLED over the current Apple Studio display? Brighter?

Much higher contrast due to local dimming zones. "Mini-LED" essentially means "rather than a handful of LEDs to light the entire displays, have ~10,000 small LEDs". (This is in contrast to micro-LED, where every single pixel is its own LED; this isn't feasible just yet.)

On the 16-inch MacBook Pro, there appear to be 10,368 LEDs. Every LED lights up a zone of 27x27 pixels, with the exception of the menu bar, which has a separate row of LEDs which is 27x74.

The upside is that if one such zone is supposed to be quite dark, you can dim the LEDs and create contrast that way. The downside is that this obviously makes the illumination uneven and can therefore lead to bloom effects, where an entire zone is lighter or darker than the rest because some individual pixels are.

when I think ppl expected 27" mini led for 1500 ,lol

it most likely won't be under 3k

RE screens in general.

Samsung or LG can make great 55 or 65 inch screens for 2 grand or so, with a fantastic spec, inc sound.

It shows it can be done. But Apple are seemingly turning more greedy if thats possible.

And changing tact with their new mass market low spec iPhone SE.

“Currently, it seems customers wanting a large all-in-one desktop computer from Apple will have to wait it out or purchase the 27-inch Studio Display and pair it with a Mac.”

Doesn’t this help with their eco friendly and sustainability goals long term? If it weren’t for the colors, iMac 24” should be the same. No reason to toss 4K/5K displays every 2-5 years, especially without target display modes or direct input connection option.

Not with a 5K or higher resolution they aren't.

And 32" is just too tall in portrait mode. 27" would be a perfect portrait display.

DSC is visually lossless, you can't notice it at all.

"Visually lossless" comes with a few caveats:

The ISO/IEC 29170 standard more specifically defines an algorithm as visually lossless "when all the observers fail to correctly identify the reference image more than 75% of the trials". However, the standard allows for images that "exhibit particularly strong artefacts" to be excluded from testing, and it also allows the experimenter to deem certain kinds of artefacts acceptable in engineered test images.

More specifically for DSC (emphasis mine):

Research of DSC using the ISO/IEC 29170 interleaved protocol, in which an uncompressed reference image is presented side by side with a rapidly alternating sequence of the compressed test image and uncompressed reference image,  and performed with various types of images (such as people, natural and man-made scenery, text, and known challenging imagery) shows that although in many (sometimes most) cases DSC satisfied the standard's criterion for visually lossless performance, in many trials participants were nonetheless able to detect the presence of compression.

Absolute nonsense - no chance this happens. My analysis track record is better than this guy.
Kind of hard to do better than 100%, no?

"iPhone SE 3 will be called “SE+ 5G"

Nope!

(Otherwise, pretty good, so far.)

There was initially a rumor that Apple would sell the lower cost display for around half of the cost of the Pro Display XDR. I don’t see a display packed with this tech being only 2500$, but maybe around 3000$ for the panel itself + extras is not so far fetched

I still would find it very weird as many people who would have gladly paid more for this Studio Display Pro will be stuck with a brand new Studio Display from two month earlier

Exactly, and I’m worried about that. I’d just be a ~month out of my return period and would’ve gladly shelled out another $1000 for those features. It’s a really weird situation, but his accuracy is spooking me.

I don’t want to pay this much for the regular one, I can imagine what the “pro” Is gonna cost. Ya can get a 65” oled tv for less. Just put out something on par with the damn 27” iMac already

Me too. I don't care much about miniLED since as a Developer I don't benefit much from it (have a MacBook Pro 16 Max). But I don't want to miss out on 120hz.

Not sure if I should cancel my order..
