I'm actually relieved that the Pro has only 2GB of RAM. Now I don't feel the need to upgrade from my iPad Air 2 at all and I will save hundreds of dollars.
lol...i was thinking the same thing.

Even without already owning an iPad Air 2, I'd have a hard time spending $200+ more on a Pro over the Air 2. The Air 2 is still a fantastic iPad.lol...i was thinking the same thing.

I remember when Sony was dominate in 90s, then they began making sub standard products and selling it for outrageous prices(Hello LG, Samsung). I feel Apple, the 290 billion dollar company is following that playbook.. I mean 2GB of ram on an iPad PRO?, no touch screen on Macs? What is going on? How much money are they really saving from 2gb to 4gb? They're still selling 16gb iPhones... I will probably still buy the iPad Pro 9.7, but do I still have to worry about page refreshes in 2016?
I think we need to step back from the whole "Pro" marketing nonsense.
This new iPad really is an iPad Air 2 with upgraded specs, that happens to come with Pencil and connector support. Thinking of it as a "Pro" just forces comparisons with the 12.9" iPad Pro, which really is mostly psychological.
What I see different is that Apple removed the 32GB option and essentially doubled
16 => 32GB
64 => 128GB
128 => 256GB
along with a rather anomalous price hike.
Ignore the Smart Connector and the Pencil support (along with the extra cost of these accessories), and you end up with something that makes more sense as an Air 2 successor - because if you really look closely, it has the exact same ergonomics and battery life, only it has an upgraded processor, display, speakers and camera module.
What it lacks is the 4GB RAM, USB 3, higher resolution and screen size of the iPad Pro 12.9". Convince yourself that these as what truly makes a "Pro" device (or don't, if you're in the iOS-sucks camp...).
The only thing to "rail against" for the new iPad is just the annoying price hike. To me - just vote with your wallets. Don't buy it at launch. Wait for the price to fall to the same as the previous iPad price points (and/or lower), then buy it.
And I'm pretty sure this will happen. iPhones have often been a difficult bet for price drops, but the iPad has seen price drops very rapidly and frequently.
This way, you'll really be buying an iPad Air 3. Which is really what this is ultimately.
Accept the Apple way... for what it is, they don't build substandard products. But they do know how to control and influence their customers. Years of practice are paying off very well. By practicing cost control and other techniques like using minimum resources like RAM Apple outsmarts their customers and competition all in one fell swoop.I remember when Sony was dominate in 90s, then they began making sub standard products and selling it for outrageous prices(Hello LG, Samsung). Definitely. I got mine a couple of months after launch when I saw a 16GB on eBay for $400, tax-free with free shipping. Then I upgraded to an LTE model two months ago since it was only $99 on contract at AT&T. I was going to get a spare unlimited data line anyway, but even if I wanted to cancel and pay the $150 ETF, the cellular iPad would have costed me less than $300. I could have sold my Wi-Fi iPad for at least that much, so it was a no-brainer.It really is.
Those who have owned it since launch day have got amazing value for money.
The Pro 9.7" on Black Friday at $100 off might fly.
Right now...no way.
I'm certainly voting with my wallet and not buying it.
its horrifically overpriced anyway, with the higher starting price and the lack of a 64gb model.
I don't think Apple takes its customers for granted.
But they will carefully calculate what features they'll include with each product release, what to hold off for a later version, and whether a price increase is merited and how much.
This is Apple we're talking about here...nothing is arrived at "by the seat of their pants" nor are they chance decisions.
Hell the Asus ZenPad 8 which is less than $200 has the same amount of ram as this supposed powerhouse from Apple. I get the fact apples and oranges but seriously, this tablet has the same amount of ram as a 4 inch iPhone. Think about that folks. This a real kick in the sack.I remember when Sony was dominate in 90s, then they began making sub standard products and selling it for outrageous prices(Hello LG, Samsung). Target had a 15% off the 12.9" iPad Pro within 4 weeks. Staples now has $150 off several 12.9" iPad Pro models. You can even get a 128GB Cellular iPad Pro 12.9" for $890 from eBay. It's not really that far fetched.
Retina came out on the iPad 3 and look how fast that got outdated.
The thing is, the Pro moniker is just a name, branding to distinguish it from the Air line of iPad that preceded it.
The 9.7" was always going to be marketed to largely the same casual market as the IPad Airs were. After all, it's the replacement for the Air 2, there's not going to be an Air 3.
I don't think the lack of a ram upgrade from the Air 2 is reason not to upgrade. The 9.7" Pro also has a better screen than the Air 2, a better faster processor and graphics chipset, the capability to use the Pencil, better cameras (though who cares about cameras on a tablet.) The list goes on. If none of those features or spec increases appeal, then by all means stick with the Air.
I'm happy it has 2GB of ram, though I do think the new iPad Pro is mediocre and they raised the price. The changes are decent, don't get me wrong, its a nice direction they're taking but this does not have any of the wow factor. I'm not sure I see the wisdom in increasing the price on a product that has its sales number in sliding.
I think it highlights the true nature of the tablet sector. Apple does have a lot going for it, and yet their sales are shrinking. I think unlike a phone, tablets are not capturing the minds and hearts of consumers.What bothers me most is the fact that there is no competition from the android side.
