I remember when Sony was dominate in 90s, then they began making sub standard products and selling it for outrageous prices(Hello LG, Samsung). I feel Apple, the 290 billion dollar company is following that playbook.. I mean 2GB of ram on an iPad PRO?, no touch screen on Macs? What is going on? How much money are they really saving from 2gb to 4gb? They're still selling 16gb iPhones... I will probably still buy the iPad Pro 9.7, but do I still have to worry about page refreshes in 2016?

And that is why 2GB of RAM is included instead of 4. And why the base iPhone storage is 16GB. And why there is only one port on the MacBook. Etc, etc.

I think we need to step back from the whole "Pro" marketing nonsense.

This new iPad really is an iPad Air 2 with upgraded specs, that happens to come with Pencil and connector support. Thinking of it as a "Pro" just forces comparisons with the 12.9" iPad Pro, which really is mostly psychological.

What I see different is that Apple removed the 32GB option and essentially doubled

16 => 32GB
64 => 128GB
128 => 256GB

along with a rather anomalous price hike.

Ignore the Smart Connector and the Pencil support (along with the extra cost of these accessories), and you end up with something that makes more sense as an Air 2 successor - because if you really look closely, it has the exact same ergonomics and battery life, only it has an upgraded processor, display, speakers and camera module.

What it lacks is the 4GB RAM, USB 3, higher resolution and screen size of the iPad Pro 12.9". Convince yourself that these as what truly makes a "Pro" device (or don't, if you're in the iOS-sucks camp...).

The only thing to "rail against" for the new iPad is just the annoying price hike. To me - just vote with your wallets. Don't buy it at launch. Wait for the price to fall to the same as the previous iPad price points (and/or lower), then buy it.

And I'm pretty sure this will happen. iPhones have often been a difficult bet for price drops, but the iPad has seen price drops very rapidly and frequently.

This way, you'll really be buying an iPad Air 3. Which is really what this is ultimately.

The Pro 9.7" on Black Friday at $100 off might fly.

Right now...no way.

I was going to order one until I saw the 2GB RAM news. I'll wait a bit to see when they are expected to update the larger IPP to figure out if I should wait for the newer larger IPP or get the existing larger IPP.

Accept the Apple way... for what it is, they don't build substandard products. But they do know how to control and influence their customers. Years of practice are paying off very well. By practicing cost control and other techniques like using minimum resources like RAM Apple outsmarts their customers and competition all in one fell swoop.

I'm certainly voting with my wallet and not buying it.

its horrifically overpriced anyway, with the higher starting price and the lack of a 64gb model.

It really is.

Those who have owned it since launch day have got amazing value for money.
Definitely. I got mine a couple of months after launch when I saw a 16GB on eBay for $400, tax-free with free shipping. Then I upgraded to an LTE model two months ago since it was only $99 on contract at AT&T. I was going to get a spare unlimited data line anyway, but even if I wanted to cancel and pay the $150 ETF, the cellular iPad would have costed me less than $300. I could have sold my Wi-Fi iPad for at least that much, so it was a no-brainer.

Target had a 15% off the 12.9" iPad Pro within 4 weeks. Staples now has $150 off several 12.9" iPad Pro models. You can even get a 128GB Cellular iPad Pro 12.9" for $890 from eBay. It's not really that far fetched.

Yep the 16gb upgrade would be £100 more and for a 64gb upgrade it would cost around £40 more as its £619.

Resell value the extra memory having 64gb has not added on much with recycling sites. £210 for a mint air 2 64gb yet I remember getting £250 for a 16gb before. So buying that extra memory won't add much value if you upgrade later.

I don't think Apple takes its customers for granted.

But they will carefully calculate what features they'll include with each product release, what to hold off for a later version, and whether a price increase is merited and how much.

This is Apple we're talking about here...nothing is arrived at "by the seat of their pants" nor are they chance decisions.

I can't see any company pulling off a £100 price rise and selling hot cakes. Other than on these forums I cant see stores selling many iPad pros they have already begun discounting the Air 1st generations now £299 UK seen them as low as £250 during sales here.

Fact all the Air and new pro look the same the 1st generation one will do most people.

Hell the Asus ZenPad 8 which is less than $200 has the same amount of ram as this supposed powerhouse from Apple. I get the fact apples and oranges but seriously, this tablet has the same amount of ram as a 4 inch iPhone. Think about that folks. This a real kick in the sack.

Oh, I was dead serious...it would need to come down $100 on the model I want before I consider it.

So the wifi 128gb model would need to be $650 for me to think about it.

In the meantime, my ipad2 32gb on ios7 is working just fine. /thumbing my nose at Apple/

Retina came out on the iPad 3 and look how fast that got outdated.

That's not the same thing. We're still using the 2048 x 1536 display (albeit improved over time). What became outdated was the processing power of the device. The advancement of iOS has no affect on the screen

The thing is, the Pro moniker is just a name, branding to distinguish it from the Air line of iPad that preceded it.

The 9.7" was always going to be marketed to largely the same casual market as the IPad Airs were. After all, it's the replacement for the Air 2, there's not going to be an Air 3.

I don't think the lack of a ram upgrade from the Air 2 is reason not to upgrade. The 9.7" Pro also has a better screen than the Air 2, a better faster processor and graphics chipset, the capability to use the Pencil, better cameras (though who cares about cameras on a tablet.) The list goes on. If none of those features or spec increases appeal, then by all means stick with the Air.

Also, I think it's safe to assume that the 9.7" Pro will take advantage of the fast NAND speeds of the 13" Pro and the iPhone 6S/6S+ which should make a notable difference in day to day use. Think about it, every app you load needs to access NAND. Waking up, turing on, powering off, updating apps, launching apps, will all be faster.

I'm happy it has 2GB of ram, though I do think the new iPad Pro is mediocre and they raised the price. The changes are decent, don't get me wrong, its a nice direction they're taking but this does not have any of the wow factor. I'm not sure I see the wisdom in increasing the price on a product that has its sales number in sliding.

I completely agree with that, I've been mulling over the same thing myself.
For a product in decline (yes we're all well aware of the whys and whatnot) they should have at the very least kept it at the same price point.

The only reasoning (if you can call it that) I can come up with is, maybe we're looking at it wrong (not a holding it wrong pun :D)

Maybe the intention of Apple going forward is to maintain three distinct iPad lines. The iPad Mini and Air which will be updated less often but provide the value propositions. After all the Air 2 still isn't exactly a slouch.

And the Pro series, which will be the ones updated more frequently and get all of the new toys long before the other two lines.

So in theory the 9.7" Pro isn't the replacement for the Air 2 so much as a new entry in the Pro line. After all they maintain 3 product groups of MacBook so why not. If that's not what they're up to then they've clearly lost the plot and don't know how to rescue iPad sales.

At this point I don't believe Apple is capable and willing to release a pro model.
2Gb ram will stay in 9.7 ipads for the next 2-3 years.
What bothers me most is the fact that there is no competition from the android side.

I think it highlights the true nature of the tablet sector. Apple does have a lot going for it, and yet their sales are shrinking. I think unlike a phone, tablets are not capturing the minds and hearts of consumers.

Well said I think give the choice people would prefer to upgrade there phones over tablets every year.

I'm in the same boat for the obvious reason that I use the iPhone more then my iPad. I'd happily upgrade my iPad every 2-4 years (I know big time scale difference) but hay that's just me

if the device run well, does it really matter? my android phone has 3gb and doesn't perform like my former iphone which had 1gb. Yes, apple is greedy, but if it works well why not get over it.

Stop ranting about it. You just have to vote with your wallet. I don't understand why people feel compelled to criticize a product without even using it. Besides, you will buy it anyway and you be giving the wrong message to Apple. For my usage which is mainly media consumption, my iPad Air 2 is more than enough!
