Don’t they want to charge an activation fee with any new sim? So if you have sim free iPhone and put in new carrier sim the will still want to charge you. Correct?

Everytime I've gotten an iPhone via the IUP I get the note about the $30 upgrade fee (and I've never been charged): You won't be charged until the VZW "sees" the new SIM in the data network.
[doublepost=1536967460][/doublepost]If you get a SIM free iPhone, you will not have to pay the upgrade fee. Why? Because it has no SIM :).
It's the SIM in the new phone that triggers what people are complaining about in this forum.
First thing on the 21st, as soon as I get it, I'll try my workaround and report ASAP here

I got my fee waived by AT&T!!! Yay. They said they will note the account and that I could have the chat sent to my email so I have no trouble if the fee is charged to my account.

It has nothing to do with the amount. It’s the fact that we’re being charged at all. The carrier has nothing to do with this upgrade. It’s all done through Apple. Why should we be paying the carrier an upgrade fee? If this was placed through AT&T, then sure, the fee is expected.
The upgrade fee has not nothing to do with the upgrade. Or what they have to do. It is there to offset other costs they have. Now some may say that these carriers make enough money. But that’s the gist of it.

Got Verizon to waive their dumb fee via online chat. One rep said no, switched and got one who said yes with some minor nice persistent asking.

I've never been able to get AT&T to waive theirs without it first appearing on my account/bill

At&t gave me 30 credit (already credited), but only for one line out of two upgraded. In total I'll pay 15 per upgrade. I used Apple Upgrade only because I want to have SIM unlocked phones. At&t has very bad unlocking process, but IMHO their CS is a way better than Philippines T-mobile CS.

They told me that I shouldn’t be charged or billed. Did on chat to make sure I have transcript. Not paying now either way.

Switching 3 lines from ATT to Verizon, so I will be hit with a $90 fee. Anyone with new service been able to get the fees waived? Coming from ATT, and using employer discount, the $30 fees were always waived.

Any time I get this fee, whether it's DirecTV or Verizon, I call and tell them to waive the fee, or send me over to the cancellation department. I get sent to the department every time. They waive the fee. If they don't, I don't have any problem getting service from someone else. I brought three lines over from ATT to Verizon (family members) because they wanted to charge the fee for them to upgrade their phones. I guess they didn't think we'd really cancel. So, they wanted that $90, but now lost three lines per year over it. /shrugs Bringing them over, Verizon wanted to charge as an activation fee. Wtf. I told them straight up, either put these three lines on my account, no fee's, or we just wont' bring 'em over. Not only did they waive the three fees, but I also got three $150 pre-paid visa cards (1 each line).

That fee is just like mail-in rebates: companies count on people being either too meek or too forgetful to deal with it.

I jut call Verizon and calmly explain that I pay them $186 a month and bought my own device through Apple. They can either waive the fee, or I’ll take my unlocked phones to T-Mobile.

Works for me.

I’m still debating switching to Verizon from att. The monthly bill from both are about the same. Verizon works better at work because with att, the service is much slower. The $90 (3 lines) for upgrading may be a deal breaker for me with Verizon. (I get a business discount with att that has activation fees automatically waived) I know verizon has restocking fees of $50 and if I cant get the $90 waived, I’d rather cancel the order before it ships. Anyone gotten luck on getting the fees refunded before a new account has been activated?

Verizon don’t like to waive but have to find rep that will. Did you switch with rep or online? Need to barter as part of switching.

Android phones dont need activation. This is Apple's doing. Maybe the carrier's want it but it is apple complying with the carrier's request to require an activation by implementing the feature.

If not going to pay the $90 which shouldn’t, call in and cancel if don’t waive. Then try local store. Sure there is a salesperson somewhere needing a sale and will do whatever it takes.

I just chatted with an AT&T rep and they waived the $30 activation fee. I saved the chat transcript just in case anything changes. Also he told me if it appears for some reason, to chat and/or call and the charges will be removed.

I literally hate carriers for constantly including these idiotic fees taking advantage of the public's need for a cell phone. It's about as bad as airlines charging for an aisle seat.
