I'd like to hear more about you playing twister with your babysitter. Pics?

I was in love with her, you don't even know. She went to college when I was like 6, maybe 7 (after that I got Sarah who was really lame). If I didn't have a girlfriend I wouldn't mind if my parents hired Natasha to look after me, even though I'm in my mid 20's...

(Before I get jumped on - it's a joke)

Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) is so far the funniest time travel comedy.

I enjoyed HTTM is because you can tell the writers were big fans of BTTF and Bill & Ted but just made it raunchy. They even included George McFly (Crispin Glover) in it. But instead of going back in time and seeing their younger selves, they wrote it like "The Constant" (my fav episode) from LOST. Only their consciousness traveled back in time using a hot tub instead of a DeLorean or phone booth. I love the ending. It was the alternate 1985 rich Biff ending. Dishonest? Yes. Would I do it the same way as Lou? Hell yeah! HTTM's ending was like a big middle finger to Doc's speech about not using time travel for financial gain. Screw you, Doc! :p

But I can never put HTTM higher than BTTF1, 2, and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. I grew up on those three. I wore out my VHS tapes watching them. HTTM2's ending even gave a nod to Bill & Ted's EA by meeting historical figures while HTTM1 plays out alot like BTTF by changing their future. Bill & Ted have the spirit of 9-year old boys which was the age I first saw them. Ted even added the "minor Oedipal complex" line as a wink to Lorraine kissing Marty which resulted into a hilarious College Humor video over a decade later. BTTF Trilogy is timeless. BTTF2 ranks #4 and BTTF1 ranks #5 all-time for me with the entire film series ranking #1.

I probably seen BTTF2 more than any other movie in my life since first watching it on TV in 1990. It is one of my few childhood favs I can still enjoy today since Gale & Zemeckis overestimated the future with flying cars and power-laced shoes and only underestimated smartphones, Internet, and us still using fax machines. The George Orwell book 1984 was written in the 1940's and still resonates 31 years later after that specific year. Disney animated films or Saved By The Bell don't hold up as well for me. They aren't that bad but I outgrew them. With BTTF or Bill & Ted, I still haven't. I still laugh at the jokes, quote the lines, and simply enjoy them for the fun.

"Since when did you become the physical type?" I love Tom Wilson in ALL his Tannen roles. Biff Tannen at any form is one of the best and most likeable villains of all-time. There is a reason the DVD set was one of the most requested before its 2002 release. Only Indiana Jones has as much comic adventure and replay value now that Stars Wars OT was ruined by George Lucas with its DVD/Blu-ray releases. Hi, I'm Hayden Christensen! NOO,oo! Star Wars OT is now a chore to watch like other film series needing a certain mood to watch them like TLotR or MCU. BTTF & Indy films I can replay them at anytime. Neither need a retouch or remake.

BTTF3, Bogus Journey, and HTTM2 had their funny moments but I wouldn't consider them in my TOP 100. Other four are TOP 20. Bill & Ted's EA is #6 overall and #3 for the 1980's. HTTM is my favorite comedy of the 21st century while BTTF1 & 2 are my favorite movies of the 1980's. On Wednesday, I will start playing BTTF2 about 20 seconds after 4:24pm. Wait 4 min and 40 sec until Doc announces to Marty and Jennifer, "We are descending toward Hill Valley, California at 4:29pm on Wednesday, October 21st, 2015." Right on the tick. That's the power of love...

You are not seriously comparing BTTF to that movie 'Hotub time machine'?!

This thread is turning increasingly blasphemous.

Part III had this major plothole that always bothered me. Where was DeLorean that Doc traveled back with to 1885? What was the whole point of that train sequence if Marty's DeLorean he got in 1955 ran out of gas?

DeLorean that transferred Doc to 1885 has been left in cave so Marty could find him in 1955 and that one was used by Marty to go to 1885. Once Marty goes to 1885 there are 2 DeLoreans at that moment (they are duplicated). First one has to remain untouched in a cave so temporal paradox would not be introduced and Marty could go to 1885 in the first place.

Can you reformulate 2nd question? Not sure what you mean.

When a time machine movie makes me feel like I'm going back in time, it's all most guaranteed to be a success. :) The two movies/book that succeeded (off the top of my head) are Back To The Future with Marty running around the town square circa 1955 and Michael Creighton's Timeline circa 1357 where they have to run for their lives within 10sec, lol. There are other time travel/paradox movies that are excellent but for other reasons.

Oh, dear.

Why the splenetic post and the cascade of emotionally charged capital letters? By the bleeding nails of Christ, it is only a movie.

If @rdowns doesn't care for BTTF so what? Some do rather like it, some love it, some (such as myself ) have never actuallyhttps://filmfork-cdn.s3.amazonaws.com/content/BTTF5.jpg seen it…..and some dislike it or think it over-rated. Personally, I think that anything with either Tom Hanks or Kevin Costner should be vaporised into oblivion, but that is just me.bb

Now, my sense - from what I have read and heard about it - is that it is a charming, harmless entertaining and rather inventive movie.

Oh dear, you are picking on Tom Hanks and Kevin Costner? ;)
Forrest Gump
Green Mile
Saving Private Ryan
TOY STORY 1-3!
The Burbs
Sleepless in Seattle
Big

For Kevin Costner, the list is shorter: No Way Out and Dances With Wolves. He has been Involved in many unworthy titles. :)

Want to have your mind really blown? I remember reading that there were as many as 5 Deloreans floating around Hill Valley in 1955 at one point in time. I can't remember where the 5th one came in, but I can think of 4 off the top of my head.

The Delorean in the cave from 1885

The Delorean from Marty's first trip to 1955 in Doc's garage

The converted Delorean flying around during Marty's 2nd trip to 1955, which happened simultaneously with his first trip.

When Old Biff steals the Delorean to give the almanac to Young Biff in 1955, since Marty and Doc went back to the same date in time after he returned.

I wish I could find that article again, it was really interesting. But at any given moment during the first two movies, there were always three time machines sitting around back in '55.

Gosh, you've given me something to ponder. :p

Very good analysis. I completely agree too.

I remember discussions about four Deloreans existing at the same time being kicked around at various places online but I can't recall any discussions that claimed five existed. The following BTTF Timeline is from the StackExchange thread on the subject.

Four is definitely the case for at least a few hours on November 5, 1955. I can't imagine where a 5th one would have come in.

This BTTF fanatic totally gets it watching the trilogy at least 1,300 times.

“I see something new every time I watch it and I often hear a joke or line I could not remember of never heard before.

“Each time I watch them I see a new angle to the film and as I mature the story matures with me and I watch it in a different
light.”
That was also true in my case.

I believe I first saw BTTF2 around 1990 around the time BTTF3 was released. It was on Showtime, and I was instantly hooked. Then I recorded it on a blank VHS tape which was one of the first movies I recorded from a VCR. I got an original VHS copy of BTTF1 and would wear it out too. When my Stepdad was still dating my Mom, I remember we were eating dinner and I had BTTF playing in the background. I would quote each line and my future Stepdad would laugh. BTTF3 was the only one I saw in the theater. I was kinda disappointed because it turned out to be a western romance film. I didn't care for Clara. I wanted Doc & Marty to continue their adventures and close friendship.

But it is true. I used to catch something new every time I watched it and this was probably after 30 times. This was circa 1990-1991 pre-Internet days when my only video game console was an NES and watching TV was usually my whole life after school if I wasn't playing with my friends outside. This was before DVD bonus material and Google search can point out every little detail and ironic line. With Zemeckis' most famous film, Forrest Gump, it also had great replay value. I learned new things after rewatching it. Same with Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. But after maybe 10-20x seeing them, they eventually get boring or I just don't feel attached to the characters like I do with BTTF.

I don't care for Forrest, Jenny, Lt. Dan, or Bubba. I don't care if Jules saw devine intervention. He still capped a couple of guys just hours before. I don't care if Vincent Vega dies since he chose that path and is a heroine addict. I don't care for Bruce Willis as an actor and he gets away with it at the end with the "Zedd is dead" line. I own Donnie Darko and Looper too, but they both don't have the same replay value for me after 10x either. Downer endings. But Marty and Doc going on time travel adventures trying to stop Biff again and again? Hell yeah! Some of my favorite episodes from Family Guy, Futurama, and LOST are "Meet the Quagmires" (homage to BTTF1), "Roswell That Ends Well" (inspired CollegeHumor to make Marty his own dad) , and "The Constant" (the conscious travels back).

I love time travel comedies because I think alot of people want a reset button with their life or want current nostalgic feelings become reality again. And it can be hilarious with the potential consequences. I saw pix of the cast reunion. Wow, Lea Thompson is much hotter at 54 than the 47-year old Lorraine in 1985. I didn't get into Star Wars until 1997 so she was my Princess Lea as a child before I saw Carrie Fisher. Some great stuff this week with BTTF and Star Wars 7. I think the best prediction BTTF2 got right is a baseball team in Miami so I am really rooting for the Cubs to win the World Series to make Cardinals fan, Bob Gale, look more genius!

If Old Biff traveled back to a new timeline, then why do Doc and Marty remember events from the previous timeline? And why is George still alive?

(Of course the whole fading thing in the first movie never made any sense either.)

It's the result of the ripple effect. The "ripple" hadn't caught up to 2015 by the time Doc and Marty left. Thus, George was still there plus Doc and Marty didn't(yet) recall the events.

She explained nicely why she doesn't like Hanks and Costner, and it's not about their choice of movies. I actually think both are very skilled artists as producers and directors, but as actors they always let you know that they are acting, hence no suspension of disbelief possible :(

In the post I responded to, unless I missed a different comment, , it was said that all of their movies should be vaporized. While I respect personal opinion in such matters, I disagreed as I disagree with you about Hanks, but it's just a difference of opinion. Green Mile is supurb, Saving Private Ryan is an excellent realistic portrayal of war, at least it seemed that way to me, someone who never experienced war as infantry.

That said, I know what you are talking about. I have got the sensation your are referencing in some actors like Robert Redford, Sean Penn, Meryl Streep, and Tom Cruise, who seem to express look at me, I'm playing this character! ;)

Difference in taste, I like all of the Forrest Gump characters and particularly Lt Dan (Gary Sinese) who is ultimately saved by his relationship with Gump and I remember holding my breath when Jenny was standing on that ledge and chuckling as Bubba rattled off an incredibly long list of ways to prepare shrimp.

Regarding time travel movies, I really enjoyed Peggy Sue Got Married but acknowledge it was not necessarily time travel but could have been a personal reality or delusion. :)
