With more apps supporting the retina display and the larger sizes as a result, 16GB is starting to become too restrictive anyways. Many of my games are half a gig, to over a gig each. And Ill need more space now that the video cam is 1080p.

Interesting just catching up on this thread.

The nexus 7 has us thinking given it's price point. I've seen one at work and it's perfectly well put together.

Having feet in both camps (and I've had an android phone a lot longer than I've had apple stuff), my android experiences just leave me a little cold. This is probably more subjective than objective but when it comes to upgrade time, things just seem to go a little awry. My S2 had to go to Samsung to be upgraded as their PC software had a bug in which caused many peoples phones to be bricked when updating to ICS. CoPilot on mine hasn't worked since (and I'm not the only one with the problem).

8 year old son is sold into the apple brand. Maybe we should take him into a store with a nexus 7 then see what he thinks...

I don't have brand loyalty; I just want something that's easy for him and I guess the parent in me wants some decent parental controls..

Not if you don't get a contract. The idea is you buy an iPhone 4S because its price and specs are so similar to the new iPod Touch - then you USE it as an iPod touch, WiFi only.

To be honest, that may be a reason to prevent Apple from this pricing much longer - you can't charge more for a new iPod Touch than a 2 generation old iPhone that does the same thing...

----------

I admit that Apple was so unclear about this that in the first 12 hours, I totally misreported the iPod news, and wouldn't believe the situation until I finally verified pricing with the Apple store. First I thought the new iPod started at $199 with 16GB (logical). Then I noticed it started with 32 GB, and thought "great! - 32GB for $199!" Finally, I started to realize that the base model was the old model, and it would cost $300 for a new one.

Seriously, I was about to buy the new iPod Touch as the world's most pocketable point and shoot, competitive in price and quality to the Powershot 320 HS. But once I finally figured out that it would actually cost an extra $100, I nixed the deal.

Was it just me, or was the presentation not clear about this?

I suspect Apple wants to deceive less-informed customers with this usual scheme.

----------

To everyone saying buy a Kindle Fire HD or Nexus 7. Here are the facts...

If the Nexus 7 was going to have a 32GB option it would be $299 and the Kindle Fire HD is $299 for 32GB so storage wise it's a fair fight.

It's little more complicated. On Nexus 7 I stored all my music in google's cloud for free. On my iPad it takes up 30 some gigs and it's not even half of my collection.

If a Nexus 7 is a viable replacement for an iPod Touch then you are using the iPod Touch wrong. :)

There are essentially just as many apps available on android as there is on iOS. In fact that are categories apps that you can't even get on iOS like keyboards, widgets, emulators, file managers, and browsers. I have never had a problem finding an app I needed. I even have an emulator for a ti-89 on here. Try doing that on iOS. Android has no lack of apps. There are over 500000 in the play store alone.

All those categories of apps exist for iOS. You just have to jailbreak. I have a DS, and NES emulator, animated wallpapers, and a file manager for my iPad. Every kind of utility, tweak, and customization is available using Cydia.

The quantity of apps is not the issue. I suspect Android will eventually have more apps than iOS. I only have at most 50 apps on my device at any given time. The issue is that many of the best apps are not available for Android. And after using Apples App Store, and then going to an Android phone and no longer having access to these apps, is a bummer.

For people who have never had an iOS device, they don't know what they are missing, which is why they are content with their meager selection. Ignorance is bliss.

As far as games, most of the best ones arent on Android, like:

Swordigo, Chinatown Wars, Pocket Planes, Street Fighter Volt, Fairway Solitaire, Beat Hazard Ultra, Infinity Blade II, Bike Baron, Gesundheit, Monkey Island 1-3, Groove Coaster, Starfront Collision, Aralon, Rage HD, Matching with Friends, The World Ends With You, Scribblenauts, Avengers Initiative, Back to the Future, Battle Academy, Zuma's Revenge, Touchgrind, MVC3, New Puzzle Bobble, SF vs Tekken, Ultimate MC3, Rayman Jungle Run, Wild Blood, Walking Dead, Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy Chaos Rings, Bastion, Skate It, Chrono Trigger, NFS Shift 2, Iron Man 2, Prince of Persia, Tom Clancys Hawk, Mirrors Edge, Hero of Sparta, Phoenix Wright, Limbo, Rock Band, Tiny Wings, Zombie Gunship, Eternal Legacy, Ticket To Ride, Sid Miers Pirates, Sid Miers Civilization

and so on, and so on

Try naming even half as many must have games that are available for Android that aren't available for iOS.

Also, for musicians, Android doesn't have an app that is comparable to Garage Band, and is missing a lot of staple music production apps like FL Studio, Animoog, Filtratron, DJay, Figure, Nano Studio, iKaossilator, DM1, Multitrack DAW, ReBirth, Ampkit, Tab Toolkit, and Amplitube. I also haven't found a video editing program that's as easy to use and has as many features as iMovie.

And there's also the random app that I need that doesn't exist on Android. When I was in NYC I used iTrans to help me use the subway system. I came back there a couple weeks ago, and found out that android does not have a comparable app that gives you live step by step navigation for their subways.

Like I said, content is the most important thing, and Android is #2 in that department. Until Android is the platform with better apps, I will continue using the platform that provides the best content. My device is a means to use apps, nothing more.

Wow, owned.

Even if these apps do absolutely nothing useful???

Rememeber: Quality over quantity!

Now that both android and iOS have hundreds of thousands of apps, its no longer a question of which platform has the biggest selection, the question is which platform has the BEST apps.

I mentioned a handful of great apps that are not available on Android. I welcome anyone to make a list of great Android apps that are not available for iOS.

Dont see it that way.

How come you picked the iPad over an android tablet?

$300 for an ipod touch is way to much. Yes it has 32gb, and the previous model was the same price with that storage, however, the Ipod Mini when it comes out will be priced about the same. That makes it real tough to get an ipod touch over a ipod mini. Sure you can't use the mini to play music on the go - answer get a $10 mp3 player or old ipod for that.

The real concern I have is the pricing structure that exists for extra storage. Memory is dirt cheap these days, yet we are forced to pay $100's more for the same product for 8gb , 16gb or 32gb increases in storage. It's outrages .

Reminds of when HP where interviewed about printer cartridges a long time ago. Someone had found out they cost 60 cents to make yet they were being sold for $60. They asked a HP exec how they could sell them for so much when they cost so little to make. The Exec answered by saying , because we can.

You have the option of not buying an Apple product you know?

$299 for an android MP3 player with comparable hardware and storage is way too much.

It appears that you have missed the point. Do you know of ANY Android MP3 player (at ANY price) with comparable hardware and storage? (processor, camera, screen quality/resolution, etc.)

A lot of phones, without contract and SIM card. Same thing.

What phone in particular would that be? Since there are "a lot of phones", you shouldn't have a problem coming up with just one. ;)

HTC EVO V 4G ($229 from Amazon, Virgin Mobile)
HTC EVO Design 4G ($229 from Amazon, Boost Mobile)
Samsung Galaxy Nexus ($349 from Play Store)
Samsung Exhibit II 4G ($189 from Amazon, T-Mobile)
Sony Xperia Sola ($269 from Amazon)

Actually, I think they would be wasted as media players, since you can go ahead and activate a smartphone plan for $30 as opposed to the $90-120 you would face for an iPhone or GS3.

And that's after a brief search in the US market, which does not interest me in first person. Here a 32GB iPod Touch 5G is 329€, and a Galaxy Nexus can be got for exactly the same money, and cheaper plans make it pointless to get a WiFi handheld device in the first place.

All if this is said considering a similar price point to the one of the iPod. If money's no object, you can simply buy a Galaxy S3, HTC One X or even an iPhone 5 for $550-$650 and you'll have a better device.

Thank you for those references! I'm very familiar with VirginMobile (we have 4 VM phones in the family for quite a few years) but had not seen those higher end models before.

You are indeed correct that those phones alone would make quite a nice MP3 player. They're actually far nicer than Samsung's line of standalone Galaxy players.

Thanks again!

Exactly, the new touch price is just a money grabbing ploy from Apple that puts their media player into the exclusive category, out of the reach of a younger adopter which the product is strangely marketed to with the new colours.

I think that you'll be shocked to see how many of those "younger adopters" find these more expensive iPods under their Christmas tree this holiday season.

The new iPod Touch is cheaper than PS Vita (with a 32GB card). If anyone is worried, it should be Sony :D

Updates on nexus devices are handled very smoothly, nothing like the emmc bricking situation on the s2. You'll get updates for years on the nexus 7.

they most likely will end up with an aging 4th generation.
