I had my 3G switched out today - no problems. The Genius checked the condition of the phone and looked inside the dock (for water damage?), told me that I've kept it in good shape, asked which pocket I carry it in, the case I used, and swapped me a new one.

He even transferred my anti-glare screen protector! But, when I asked if my replacement could be in white, he told me that they could only give me the colour I originally had (black).

Well, that was my first genius bar experience - it was great! They were really nice :D

PS - Oh, right - my crack was smack in the middle of the dock going upwards. He told me it actually wasn't all that common - only during a spike earlier when it initially released, most of the ones he sees now are from people that carry it in their back pockets.

Received the replacement iPhone today. MMMMM SHINY :D

Last night I noticed a crack beside the USB connector on my iPhone 3G. I called Rogers today and the representative said "well ..... I can send you a replacement and then you will have to send your phone to Apple. If they decide that the crack is due to abuse, you will have to pay $550.00 for the refurbished replacement that was sent to you. You can't send back the refurbished replacement." He said that if I had an Apple store near me it would be easier because I could simply take it in to the Apple Store and let them have a look at it. This sounded like quite a gamble to me. The phone currently works but the crack is quite large. I told him that I have never had a phone crack before and that the crack seems to be at a weak place on the back of the phone. He then told me that I could contact Apple directly to see what they had to say. Perhaps there would be a local genius that I could take the phone to.

So, I called Apple Care (1-800-myapple) and spoke to someone and I told her that I noticed a crack when I took it out of the case to clean it last night. She asked me where the crack was and I told her that it was at the USB connection. She asked me what kind of case I used and I told her that it was a soft silicone case. She then asked which way the crack went on the back case and I told her that it went straight up the middle. Then she said ... "no problem, this is something that we can replace under warranty"!!:D:D

So she is shipping out a replacement and then I will send back my old phone after it arrives. SWEET!!

Thanks Apple!!! :apple:

P.S. This picture was taken with my wife's new iPhone 3GS. Not too bad!

In my country the warranty is 2 years, I´m holding to the 3G 16GB stock became unavailable, with very lucky I hope get a 3GS. :D

Most brand new white 3GS come with several hairline cracks

I just noticed 99% of 3GS's housings already has several (not only one) hairline cracks located between volume buttons and chrome frame on the day you bought it, which much worse than 3G version. If you own a white 3GS, you can check and see if you has them. Since I work in a cell phone store, and I checked out about 20 White 3GS 16GB/32GB, they all has them already before they got to end users.

Does this mean that customers are buying iPhones that have been opened? Personally, I wouldn't touch an iPhone without the shrink wrapping in place!

Cracks and chips in white iphone housing

Here's my experience with the Apple Store today. Made an appointment with the Genius Bar to discuss cracks and a chip in my white iphone case. it is almost 1 year old and has always been in a case. It is babied, never in my pocket and never dropped in water.

The Genius guy looked at my iphone and said the cracks were covered and agreed to replace it. That is until he looked at the sensors and said one of the sensors was "tripped" and pink. This "water damage" voided my warranty and they would be happy to replace it for $199.99! He went on to explain that the only way the sensor could be tripped was for my iphone to be submerged in a liquid for no less then 20 seconds! I have NEVER and I mean NEVER dropped my phone in water. He went on to say that this would have damaged my phone causing it to malfunction. My phone works perfectly! I asked to speak with a manager who recited this same speech nearly verbatim!

Short of calling me a liar, he said there was no way possible for the sensor to be tripped without liquid damage. I left feeling humiliated and angry.

Not one to easily give up, I contacted "Apple Care". I explained to the rep the situation with my phone. He said it was an "emerging problem" with the white iphones saying that cracks were appearing an both ends of the power jack area as well around the earpod jack. I asked him if the water sensors being tripped would void a replacement, he said no. Since this was a emerging problem, they would gladly replace it. He said I could either go back to the apple store and request an exchange or pay $29.99 to have a brand new (not refurb) phone shipped to my house. I opted to pay the $29.99. The Apple Store is a 50 mile round trip for me and I didn't want to risk being rejected again. The iphone will arrive in 2-3 days. I am to take out my sim card after backing up my phone on my computer. I can then ship my cracked iPhone back. The $29.99 paid for shipping both ways. I could have bought an extended warranty at this time for $69.99 and the $29.99 fee would have been waved.

Just inspected my Iphone 3GS - no hairline cracks. Yet.
I found several of them on my Iphone 3G and hope that this won't become evident on this phone as well. :(

They didn't offer any upgrade option to the 3gs???

Thus the reason I am staying with my 1st gen until Steve rethinks the plastic backing..

I need the metal... I am wayyy too clumsy for plastic.. also the reason I decided not to mess with getting a Palm Pre..

My new White iPhone arrived.

:DWhite iphone replacement update.

My new iPhone was delivered to my door at 10:00am this morning. That is 18 hours from the time I hung up with Apple Care. I must say that I am very impressed. I got my new iphone up and running within an hour. I just can't understand why I was treated so badly at the Apple Store at Somerset Mall, Troy, Michigan. Does anyone have a guess as to why Apple Care would exchange my iphone and the Apple Store would not?

I'll let you know if this one cracks!:)

Mine has some cracks as well. I made a appointment for this thursday with the genius bar. So is the "replacement phone" a refurbished phone or are they indeed brand new?

Considering people with 2G iPhones still get replacement 2G iPhones, I'm fairly certain that whatever you walk in with is what you'll leave with. Apple has no incentive to give you an upgrade. And they probably never will.

Has anyone ever gotten an upgrade to a newer model due to replacement? I doubt it, but if they have, now's the time to chime in.

replacement iPhone not a refurb

I specifically asked Apple Care if it was brand new or a refub. I was told it was BRAND NEW. Also, the paper work that came with the replacement states, "Your replacement iPhone assumes the remaining warranty of the original product or 90 days from the date of replacement, whichever provides longer coverage".

Not to make this thread sound like a broken record, but my 2nd 3G has hairline cracks around the headphone port. I called AppleCare and they are advance replacing the phone for me free of charge, since I purchased the AppleCare extended warranty. Not bad!

My first 3G had cracks around the dock connector port and the "vibrator motor" was broken.

I always go to that store to get my cracked iPhones replaced, and they had treated me very well, had replaced 5 times due to the cracks, only once one not friendly geniue tried to not fix the problem and stated that 'you dropped it', I asked for the store manager (I hope he is still there) and the problem was solved.
Generallly they are very helpful but from time to time there is one 'geniue' that wants to show off.
Anyway my current 3G has the cracks as usual and Ill be there again due to the same, I'll let you know the outcome.

I know, but my 3G has to be replaced, if they run out stock better for me, if not I only want my problem solved. :D

In my country we only have authorized apple dealers (no genius bar and very poor support), oficial apple only by applestore online.
The iphone sells and warranty are made by mobile companies like vodafone or optimus and I think they can run out of 3G 16GB stock.

Sorry for my english.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, I agree that sometimes your treatment depends one who takes care of you! My daughter and I tried to make the exchange and we felt like second class citizens. I know that this sounds "sexist" but I feel if my husband would have tried to make the exchange, he would have been treated very differently. BTW, we own 4 apple computers, 5 iPhones, and 5 ipods so we are definitely an apple friendly family! I have 2 more cracked white iPhones to exchange so i'll let you know how that goes too! Good luck!

I inspected my plastic housing today and realized that there are cracks between the sim tray and the bezel, the headphone jack and the bezel and between the volume rocker and the bezel. I called Applecare and should have a new phone delivered tomorrow.
