I have had my white 16 gb iphone for over 7 months now and it has many cracks along the bottom of the phone and around the hole for the earphones. I want to get my phone replaced because I know that these cracks are a "known issue." My question is- will they replace my phone for the cracks if the bottom right hand corner of it is damaged? I accientally dropped the phone a while back and it left quite a mark on it. Will I still be able to get the phone replaced for the cracks? Thanks.

I don't think the cosmetic damage in the corner of your iphone will void your 1 year warranty. I think only tripped water sensors or your phone no longer working from accidental damage will void your warranty. Take it to the Apple Store and show them the cracks and ask for a replacement. You can also call Apple Care and report the cracks like I did and arrange for a replacement phone to be shipped to your house ($29.99 shipping).

Does anybody know if I need to take in everything that came with the phone (box, earphones, etc.) or if I can just take in the phone itself?

And also- do they actually play around with your phone and not just look at the exterior because I currently do not have data plan on my phone.

How does the process work? If they decide to replace my phone, will they just hand me a new one and I'll be on my way? Or will they activate it for me and all that?

just the phone and no, they dont mess with it other than get the serial and whatnot to make sure it still is under warranty

Thanks for the replies. I went in today and came out with a new iPhone! Looked it over and no cracks... yet! The guy was super nice... the bottom of my old phone was BADLY scratched, chipped off, etc. and he made an exception. I love apple!

Well, I brought mine in for 2 issues: My iPhone keeps crapping out: It will run sluggish, then it will get stuck on the screen. You soft-reset it, and all you'll get is the apple logo on the main screen until the battery craps out. The only fix is a full system restore through itunes.

That was my main complaint. I also have the cracks along the headphone jack and vibrate switch.

He plugged my phone in, and said there were no logs, because I did a full restore through iTunes last night (which I had to do: I need to use some reference software for work, and it wasn't working for me!). So he said come back if it does it again, and they'll investigate the logs.

I asked about the cracking: It's just superficial. I wouldn't be too concerned.
 You guys made it seem like it's a simple swap: Tell them it's cracking, and they'll instantly swap it out. I go in for 2 problems, and he sends me home packing.

Do I need to push more or something??? Phone is new as of January (Birthday gift), and has never been dropped. She has her own dedicated pocket, and is protected by an invisible shield (i took it off for her checkup today).

Make an appointment with the Genius Bar with your MAIN complaint being the cracks in the case. Let them know you are concerned about the cracking and would like a replacement. They will ask if you carry the phone in your back pocket, tell them no. They will check your water sensors and if they have not been tripped then they will swap it out for a new phone. If the water sensors are tripped (pink), then the warranty is voided. My water sensors were tripped, however, i called Apple Care and they swapped it out for me for an overnight shipping fee of $29.99. This fee also covered Fed Ex. Return shipping.

Does Apple keep track of my bringing in the phone? I could try a different apple store this morning, but I wouldn't like them to think I'm shopping around!

They may keep a record of your visits to the Genius Bar. What matters is that you have a defective product that you paid your hard earned money for and they need to take care of it to your satisfaction! :)

I purchased my Black 3G on the 2nd day of the release, which I think was July 15/16 or so of 2008. As it is past the one year warranty, will Apple still cover the cracks in the housing if I bring it in?

No, I think you are going to be out of luck.

Apple have been know to fix certain problems out of warranty so it's worth a try but don't get your hopes too high.

I went and made an appointment at apple and luckily i talked up the genius and he didnt see the out of warranty until the very end when it asked me to pay the $199. LOL, but then he was really chill so he talked to the manager about it and let it slide. WHEW!!

Well, I went to a different apple store (a little out of my way, but not too far), and the Genius helped me out.

I told him my main complaint was my cracking case, and asked him if it was common. He acknowledged it was, took mine away, and came back in 10 minutes with a brand new one! I guess I just had to find the right Genius! I've always had trouble at the other Apple store, but I always preferred the location (and the layout... it's a much larger store), but the help at this new one may be more than worth the extra 10 minutes of driving...

Yeah! Good for you! Congrats!:):):):D:D:D

I have a crapload of cracks like the picture shown on the previous page...

I don't know if it's worth the trouble to go through and get it exchanged for another phone with cracks.

why can't apple make this right? apparently they're using extremely ****** materials.

I have just begun to develop a crack along the mute switch but I don't think I'm going to return it. I have had to return iPhones in the past for more serious issues, so I don't want to get another one running the possibility of having a light leak or the like. Plus, the new phone may develop the same cracks anyway...

I have a few all around the white plastic now. It doesn't bother me too much, not yet at least that I would want to go get a new one, but it does piss me off since I take such good care of it.

Just discovered two cracks near the vibe switch. I haven't had any probs w my 3g other than this. Hubby thinks it's not a big deal. I've had it 10 months, so the time is now if I wanna do anything.

I'm afraid that my swap will have serious issues like light leaks etc. I don't want to regret swapping mine.

Do I just live w the cracks or take a chance?

cracked white iphone *white*

Yeah I noticed the crack in mine about 4-5 days ago. I most certainly did NOT drop the phone... the crack pretty much appeared out of nowhere. I believe the crack is beneath the glossy coating on the plastic because I can't feel it. Here's a pic.

I called apple and they said after the year warranty, they can't help me...if i'd like a replacement, it'll be an additional $299....i said to the guy, "THEY SUCK...and stop ripping off the consumer with overpriced iphones!"

How about shield

Hi All,

Read a few posts about cracks already start to appear on the edge of the housing. The phone is only a week old (obviously) and was not dropped or pressed. Is it common?

It seems that some people start to claim this issue and getting transparent shield instead. Cretouch guys made similar one with invisible folks. I don't know which one is better but it looks like a good option for you.

Calling apple is the worst! bad customer service and they keep you an hour on the phone! the best thing to do is go to an apple store. always.

black iphone 3g

I had a crack right in the middle of the shell where the usb connector is. I made an appointment at the apple store and took it in. The guy checked it to make sure that it hadnt been in water then gave me a new one. Took about 10 minutes.

After reading this post I noticed some cracks on the bottomn of my 3Gs. What is the best way about getting this fixed. I don't have Applecare and I just got my phone 2 weeks ago. I live in Idaho and we don't have an Apple store. Does an authorized repair store work or do I have to mail it in? Any help would be great thanks!
