Bro, all you have to do is take the phone in and let them know what your issue is and that you would like to return it for an exchange. Should be no problem, especially because you are still within your 30 return period.

The only problem is we dont have an apple store in the state of Idaho. Can I go to an AT&T store to get it replaced?

Thanks!

Maybe, give them a call and ask. Did you purchase apple care? If you did, you can call apple care and get it exchanged via overnight fed ex free of charge. If you don't have apple care, you can exchange it for a fee of $29.99 which covers fed ex shipping both ways.

coffee:p;)

I'm curious what success people are having in the uk. I bought my 16gb 3g in CPW on payg last year and I've got 2 cracks (not hairline, quite noticable). One comes from the silent switch towards the back, about 5mm long, the other is between the dock connector and a screw. It hasn't been dropped, just ended up cracking. I assume, based on the location and direction (the silent switch crack), that it's from how I've been holing it. Sometimes I could hear the phone "creek" as I gripped it. Not like I was trying to crush it with my hands or something, just when I hold it and press the sleep button with my index finger of the same hand, for example.

My 3G had a crack between the sim tray and the power switch and dust under the screen. Made an appointment with a genius at the London Regent St store back in early July. I showed him the cracks and the dust, the guy looked at the phone, checked it over making sure the water sensors hadn't been tripped etc. Then promptly swapped it over for a new/refurbished one. Whole process took not more then 10-15 minutes.

Even though the phone was still under 1 year warranty when he was checking my details he did comment that I had Applecare, so I don't know if that helped at all.

I was then able to sell the phone as pristine condition and put the money towards a new 3GS. :D

-- In response to that, will apple care still replace the phone for $29.99 if you are no longer under the 1 year warranty and have not purchased apple care? How do they know if your phone is eligible to be replaced for cracks?

i have a crack from where the dock connect is till like a bit less then a fingernails length up the back...so if i press on the botta back the plastric will move...i always have it in a case and havent dropped it...sooo can i get a replacement..its been less then a year.

this is exactly why i am curious. i got a 3GS now and looking to sell the 3G. was thinking that now i don't need it every day i could try getting it exchanged by post (no apple stores near me) as i don't have apple care and don't mind being without the 3g for a few days.

Someone said they were out of warranty a couple of weeks when they took their cracked iphone in. They said the genius guy was pretty nice and made the exchange for him even though it was just out of warranty. I would say that it is always worth a try, you may get a super nice genius helping you.

You will have to call applecare and ask them about the replacement. Since it is a known issue, you may be able to get the replacement, however, you won't know until you call. It seems that a lot of it depends on who you talk to. For example, I took my out of warranty macbook in for repair because it would no longer turn out. They diagnosed a broken disk drive with a cost of around $300.00 to repair. Then the genius guy noticed that my case was cracked and missing small pieces around the edges (not from my dropping it, the pieces just broke off). He told me that this was a known problem with my macbook and that "they had no choice but to make all the repairs for free". I nearly fell over from shock. I was fully expecting to chalk my computer up as a loss and get a new one sometime in the future. I ended up with an almost new computer. Good luck! Coffee

sighhhhhhhhhh :( i checked my 10 month old white 3G and there are two cracks at the headphone jack visible under normal lighting, and this big 1cm crack on the bottom right side. (near the corner, but not the corner). The 1cm crack is from top to bottom. Two dents at the center of the iphone that actually came with the phone but i never bothered exchanging for such a minor issue. Now it has seem to grow bigger. There are also several tiny cracks at the mute button switch and the corners, but not visible unless its under a bright source of light.

Does this qualify for an exchange? I keep it in my silicone case in a shoulder bag.

Will Apple Store give me a hard time saying it is due to normal wear and tear? If anybody has any experience to that, what do you say back? Or something like "I dont see the cracks you are talking about!" I think my Apple store is quite small in this area and might not see this kind of issue as much.

Better luck through Apple customer service via the phone?

Oh yea, last time I went to that Apple store and told them that my USB cable was so broken that the silver wires were coming out. They told me I had to buy a new one. I guess it is normal wear and tear but i didnt think it was that cheap!!

I just discovered a very noticeable crack in my black 3GS today (the crack is right next to the silent switch). You can run your fingernail across the crack and it catches so it's clearly not a hairline scratch.

I have discovered 3 cracks on my 10 months old 3g. Two by the silence switch and one by the headphone jack.

I'm keeping it in a case, and it bothers me, but I'm more afraid of getting a refurb w/more serious issues and then regretting swapping. IDK.

they definitely swap us refurbished? how do they manage to keep the refurb in stock when the 3G S is newer?

hows the quality for refurbished? they were once broken and apple just fixes it up?

I just noticed that my 3GS has 4 noticeable cracks near the dock connector. Ive had it since launch and of course babied the phone. Ill get a replacement once the cracks get larger or until a major problems happens to the phone. Ive learned to live with the fact that the iPhone will crack for no apparent reason under normal usage.

It may be no apparent reason for the us like users, but there is physical explanation why those cracks appear.
I was hoping that when they released the "3GS" (I didn't how it was going to be named) :apple: changed the material of the iPhone, and use something with a better grip like soft touch paint type of surface, and of course non crackable.

Plastic material will crack if it has dimensional issues, incorrect plastic material properties, exposed to extreme forces, or by design it is not good enough for the application. :apple: should know what to do, probably the design is good enough but the process variation at the supplier production environment is not under control. For :apple: is a supplier issue, so they keep replacing the defective iPhones and charge them back to the supplier. Keeps the customers with 'new' iPhones' until they release a new model.

I recently got my iPhone replaced by Apple at an Apple Store after Carphone Warehouse (on Twitter) sent me this useful document.

Which shows what damage is covered by the iPhone, the 6th box on the top is for the cracked iPhones so before your warranty runs out get it swapped.

I also wrote a blog post about my poor experience :(

Just got back from the San Francisco.

Hairline cracks all over the place!

Crack near headphone jack (near metal strip)
Crack near headphone jack on opposite side
crack by the power button
crack by the volume control
Two cracks on each side of the dock connector originating at the screws.

It's an iPhone 3GS 32gb.

Apple just replaced it and gave me a new one.

I got cracks all over my iPhone: Headphone Jack, power button, dock connector, sides.

Will go to Apple asap. I have to get my mac looked at as well anyway.

After already having my 3GS replaced a couple of months ago for this issue, my replacement phone now has the cracks in exactly the same spot  This is annoying but at least I know I can go in and get a new phone when this phone gets even worse looking.

OK im thinking about swapping my cracked phone for a new one

obviously they are going to give refurb

do you know what the baseband/firmware will be? Would I still be able to JB it? what are my chances? i dont care about unlocking

With blackra1n it wouldn't matter what the baseband/firmware you get on it is - you'll be able to jailbreak (up to 3.1.2).

I've had my 3G for about 15 months. The cracks started way before the 1 year mark but I was traveling and did not have a chance to get it replaced. Think they will still swap it or tell me I'm SOL?

Drat. Just took off my Speck Candy Shell case to put on a new screen cover, and discovered cracks all around the volume control buttons. The cracks aren't catching, but the are they're located in is used all the time and I can totally see it getting worse over time.

Do I need to call my local Apple store to set up and appointment, or can I just go there? Also, what's the best way to back up my apps and data, itunes?

Thanks all,
Mike
