3G iPhone Already Ordered By Apple?

Apple has been discounting the refurbished iPhones a lot and the stock of iPhone seems to be running dry across many stores. I would not be surprised if Apple unleashed the 3G iPhone within a week or two. As far as the OLED goes, I don't think Apple will put them in their iPhones so soon.

Looks dismal, but in any country that has highly populous cities, a map like that probably covers 95% of the population, no?

02 were slapped by Ofcom for failing to meet the 80% of population covered by 3G by 31 December 2007. All the other major carriers achieved this, some quite considerably more.

However, 02 have until June to get their act together. They currently stand at 76%.

What if the iPhone was 3G capable from the day it was launched.
May be a software update will make it 3G capable...

Remember what happened with all those MBs, MBPs, and iMacs that were showing up as 802.11g, but turned out they were 802.11n with the software update? (yeah i know, we had to pay 1.99 to get the update)

I completely agree.

I mean look at the article by ilounge which says that the 16GB iPhone has been running dry for quite some time.
And it doesn't make much sense. It should have been the 8GB ones if Apple was planning to bump the capacities.

Why would Apple do that though? They would've had many more sales if it was 3G from the start

Assuming the OLED part is correct, I wonder how long before the touch would be upgraded to OLED.

i dont know, may be to avoid overloading the 3G networks, or to optimize 3G for the battery with a software update... dont know, it's just a thought

The iPhone has been dissected a million times and analyst iSuppli has been crystal clear about this - The iPhone does NOT have a 3G chip

I have some magic beans for sale? are you interested??

I almost always say "buy now" but this is one of those times I'm 'gonna recommend waiting.

Commander Stevie must be blowing a gasket with this type of rumor. Apple iPhone sales will dry up because now, no one will want a 1st gen phone knowing that the 3G version is right around the corner.....

Doubt it. Plenty of people out there buying up these phones that don't pay attention to rumors.

wireless stereo please =)

In addition to rumored upgrades, hopeful wish: add/enable A2DP to bluetooth profile

It would be nice to be able to listen to songs/videos in wireless stereo without the need of another accessory.

not everyone follows the iphone that closely. There are plenty of people that are still going to be buying the current version of iphone until the new one comes out

Not really. I had a flat rate one from T-mobile in the UK for about six months before the iPhone came out in the US. £7.50 for unlimited web and walk.

T-Mobile were the exception to the rule. The whole industry has now followed suit (Voda, O2, Orange, 3 - I can only speak for the UK)

Not really. I'm regularly in the light blue areas.

Don't forget the UK is very highly populous full stop, when compared to places like the US.

O2 offered unlimited data packages too - I was thinking about an XDA at the time. Voda and Orange didn't but then they're both horrible.

Well it's worked on me!

As I said before 3G is very poor in my area so I'm not fussed. But even a hint at a new feature that promises better battery life warrants a wait.

A more refined iPhone would be music to my ears.

...but the cost was prohibitive wasn't it? O2 and the rest of them are at roughly T-Mobile figures now.

As an aside I've been pricing up deals for my wife (she wants a K770 on Voda). I think the O2 iPhone tariff is pretty good all considered (now it's been bumped).

Yeah - I don't think it was that good. 3 did one as well but it was a bit limited in terms of what you could access.

The 02 tariff is pretty good now. I think 02 had to do something when they realised that their original charges just weren't competitive enough.

Agreed. There are mobile phone ninjas on here that could negotiate the same thing for 25 quid but 1. I don't have that ability and 2. I don't believe half of the claims :)

The OLED part of the rumor seems very suspect and VERY risky. I would expect to see OLED appear on an iPod first (like a Nano) rather than the iPhone. Giving people something else to bitch about (poor OLED life) isn't a wise move.

The 10 million order does seem likely. It isn't like Apple will receive all 10 million in one shot. If there is a problem with the 2nd generation they will be able to fix it without risking all the inventory. Stories have been around since before the 1st generation shipped that Apple already had a 3G phone, but it wasn't ready for prime time. So it isn't like it is untested yet. That large initial order commitment is necessary to get the price levels they require for production of the phone.

And why all the speculation about "seeing it in a few weeks or May" ? Apple has clearly stated that June is the time for new major iPhone things, starting with the version 2.0 firmware (internally called 1.2, which makes me think that it is so named to come out with a version 2.0 iPhone). The stores are selling out existing 1st Generation inventory as you would expect, but there are several million more 1st Generation phones still in the pipe. Depending on the price point they may still sell well in the US even after a 2.0 iPhone with 3G. It isn't like the US has a huge 3G network in place today anyway.

o2's coverage for 3g is v poor - so much so that they were the only UK operator not to hit their coverage targets and have been clobbered with a massive fine from Oftel!

Fingers crossed the iPhone 2.0 will hit Vodafone in the UK - its the best 3g network in UK by a mile in terms of coverage, and data speeds (up to 7.2mbps now)

a phone with good battery life? I haven't seen one of these since the late 90s.

When they give me 3g and 64 gbs of space I'm on board!

To respond to your first post, I've had numerous phones with good battery life. Don't let the Motorola Razr ruin it for all phones. If my phone lasts all day, that, to me is good battery life, what's the big deal with popping it on the charger every night?

The second part is just funny. 3G, okay, coming soon. 64GB is a little bit harder to accommodate. The 16GB chips are still relatively new and the 32GB iPod Touches just use 2 of them, versus a 32GB chip. And with the addition of 3G, there is less room for hardware inside.

You are just greedy, my friend, greedy.
