Well you can wait forever, always in hopes of the next big thing around the corner... or you can man up and get the product and when it comes time to upgrade or replace you will have been happy the whole time.

I for one, am glad to have purchased the iPhone (right after price drop) and I would have been miserable sitting around with my old motorola reading forums month after month.
"Man up"? Sounds like you didn't "man up" until a price drop. You waited. There's lots of reasons to wait: Price, Features, Hard drive space -- then there's those who don't like to be early adopters due to bugs. Then there's financial obligations to other things where $399-499 might seem too extravagant at the time --> you waited till the price drop. Personally, I decided to wait until at least one thing happened: price drop, storage space increase or new models. For me, when they came out with the 16GB model, I was all over it like a lamp shade. One for me and one for the missus.

Is there any benefit to OLED apart from increase in battery life and maybe allowing the iPhone to slim down a little? Not sure I see what all the excitement is about. 3G would be ok but not the biggest step forward. Video calling is frankly not all it's cracked up to be. It's been available in the UK and Europe for ages and has never really taken off. Only ever used as a bit of a gimmick for a couple of calls. It soon becomes annoying having to hold your phone out in front and you look a prat in public.:D

Well, apart from brightness, reduced battery use, a much greater angle of view (with no color changes etc in this cone), contrast, and refresh rate for games and movies?

Imagine rephrasing your comment and replacing the word "video calling" with "touch sensitive screens ": "touch sensitive screens have been available in the UK and Europe for ages, and have never really taken off. Only ever really used as a bit of a gimmick. It soon becomes annoying having to hold your phone out in front and you look a prat in public ..."

To be honest, I think Phil Schiller is hitting into overdrive. Between now and WWDC - what rumours are there to do? MacBook Air, MBP and MacBook won't be upgraded really till Nehalem late Q4 08, the iPod refresh seems not till Autumn. New screens might be a blessing come WWDC, but how can they make rumours of something that's already announced and in beta to developers?

People need to remember that AT&T doesn't offer 3G in every part of the country yet, so in all likely cases Apple will have both models out at the same time. NYC is covered by 3G so it's likely that they will strategically roll 3G iPhones out based on geographic location.

Here is a list of cities covered by AT&T with 3G data access:
http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/popUp_3g.html

Or maybe they'd roll it out proportionally - put more new 3G iPhones stock on sale in places with better 3G cover... ;)

No... 3G phones are entirely capable to rolling back to EDGE when not in 3G range. As long as they keep the price the same, there is entirely no need to keep an older product on the shelves. I mean, Apple never does that. [ex: iPods, MacBooks, etc.]

Guys! It was a joke I've got a multipage analysis thread on the 3G iPhone for pete's sake :p

The ;) should have given it away. More 3G handsets on stock in places with better 3G coverage.I.e. I was joking that seeing as smaller Apple stores would probably have a smaller inventory, (and also be in smaller areas/areas with lower 3G coverage), and bigger shops would be in bigger more suburban areas and have a larger inventory. Like London, NY.which would (hopefully) have better coverage. They'd also have bigger stores, to sell more stock of them...

Apologies for the bad/cryptic joke. I'll keep with irony and eye rolls next time ;)

Unlocked Release ?

I am really hoping this 3G phone will be released unlocked. I think apple has tested the water with AT&T O2 etc now they can just release it to the masses (me) I can't help but remember the apple 1984 commercial it's as if she threw the hammer but it was caught mid air by the telecom giants who promptly said "nah don't think so". It's just not down with the apple ethos having third parties involved. In this case they needed a starting hand to get moving now the world knows it should sell it itself albeit with a hefty price tag !

If you mean locked to a single carrier, AT&T has an exclusive 5 year contract in the US. That's not speculation, that's pretty much fact. I would assume companies in other countries have the same. It's not going to happen.

Not down with the Apple ethos, but the carriers probably decided they would have nothing to do with an unlocked phone, so Apple compromised. They got quite a bit from AT&T in return.

Not doubting you if true (and it would make some sense as Apple gets a kick back from every iP AT&T subscriber that signs the contract if I remember what I've read correctly), but where did you read about the 5 year contract? Is it fact?

it will definitely be released with 2.0

I am pretty sure the guy who discussed the app store said u will be able to download the apps on ur phone through wireless internet and the network (at&t). Why would all of a sudden would u be able to dl things through edge and have to wait until june to do it. Cause right now the only way u can access the itunes store is through wifi. So 3g iphone will be here in june with the release of 2.0.

so uh 3G + iphone + 400 = me? lol

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Math just doesn't work.

Here's one:

Money quote: "AT&T has exclusive U.S. distribution rights for five years — an eternity in the go-go cellphone world. And Apple is barred for that time from developing a version of the iPhone for CDMA wireless networks."

Sorry. I'm already AT&T so it doesn't bother me as much, but it must be a real pain for people happy with their current provider.

I re-reread your post and still can't figure out what you're saying. You might be right about June though, just because ramping up production takes time.

My girlfriends cell phone is falling apart. Literally falling apart. But, I am not going to extend her contact to get a new phone because I have been waiting for the 3G iPhone. Shes not very happy about the wait, but in the long run she will be happy.

If they come out with a 3G iPhone, I am going to get the 3G version and give her the EDGE version. She doesn't need the speed and she is plenty happy getting my old one.

The bad news is, if her phone dies ... I will be forced to purchase a new one and extend her contract with T-Mobile.

Hurry up 3G iPhone!!

If you are talking about switching to AT&T, go ahead and switch and get a new phone. When you get the iPhone it will extend the contract anyways to 2 years from activation date so you will be in the same situation, but with a new phone that you can sell when you get the iPhone.

Reality

I am as excited for the next gen iPhone as anyone.
But I think it important to remember: just because it can happen, doesn't mean it will (or should).

If Apple's product evolution/rollout has taught us anything, it's that they are slow to add features - just because they can.
They have to make money (over time), sustain a product line, milk their customers. Makes no business sense to give the customer everything they want.

That said, I think it a bit silly to expect 3G AND 64MB AND OLED AND a front-mounted camera for iChat AND...
No, I suspect they'd slowly roll out those features over several versions and months/years. Not all at once.

Though I've been wrong before. ;)

Thanks for the info! It does suck for those of us who prefer another provider.

As soon as iPhone goes 3G I'm getting one. I refuse to downgrade to EDGE from my current EV-DO phone though.

3G is not in my area, although Edge is... If I bought a 3G iPhone, would it also have the ability to run off of Edge when 3G service isn't available?

"Why would Apple ramp up production of the new modell if it's not available till late june?"

Nobody weakened this argument, yet.

Nobody mentioned this...

I don't mean to rain on everyone's parade, but remember that all phones must go though FCC for review, and remember why Steve unveiled the iPhone so early last time?

Since we haven't see jack from the FCC, that means iPhone 2.0 / 3G is still months away at best, not June.

Commander Stevie must be blowing a gasket with this type of rumor. Apple iPhone sales will dry up because now, no one will want a 1st gen phone knowing that the 3G version is right around the corner.....

Yeah, if only anyone but the geek set knew about this rumor. Nerds have a nasty habit of assuming that what they know is mainstream knowledge.
