You should care because you are NOT getting the (new) iPhone until it passes FCC approval. Apple is not going to sell a 3G iPhone outside the U.S. first. It will most likely be a simultaneous release.

Funny how (many) US citizens are sooo US centric. (apologies if you are Canadian...)

Ever heard of Japan?

If Apple want to get a (legitimate) bean out of Japan, it will only be with a 3G phone. And there is a heap of bean over there (and here in Australia...mining boom) waiting for Apple to collect it.

We should have our first company owned Apple store opening here around the beginning of May. A perfect time for a release if ever there was.

I do agree that best case scenario for all is a simultaneous release.

Why would they need FCC approval yet?

Was wondering this as well. I seem to remember Jobs saying phones had to be approved 6 months in advance by the FCC. Seems unlikely a new phone could sneak up on us.

It's not like they make them in the USA.

I can see Apple taking an unusually (for them) aggressive launch for the next generation iPhone. A super spec cell phone is within their capabilities and together with the version 2.0 software coming in June, Apple could well deal the cell phone market a severe blow.

Like I say, Apple doesn't normally do the smash and grab approach and their devices normally have staggered refreshes (after all, they don't want you to have too much tech too early, think of the future sales!). However, all signs from Cupertino point to a totally different beast when it comes to this platform.

I was in the London store on Good Friday and iPhones were literally walking out of the door. It's phenomenal. A revision that improves every feature of the iPhone isn't just going to punch Apple towards the top end of the market for all cell phones (not just smart phones or convergance devices) but provide the sort of stimulus and halo effect on all Apple products that'll see Macs gain more consumer real estate at a time when PC manufacturers are seeing their own sales stall.

My contract has just finished so I cannot wait for the new iPhone!

That's why I said in my experience, I am hardly ever without 3G coverage and EDGE coverage in the UK is worse than 3G and more flaky. HSDPA is not necessarily what we are talking about here with 3G,

Yeah, I'm not disagreeing with you. I just think its needs pointing out that 3G with O2 isn't that great (edit: for everyone)

It's still going to be a lot better than EDGE and it's GPRS fallback. Which, I actually get by with reasonably well in the UK. The iPhone would shine with just 384kbit/s last-gen 3G, nevermind HSDPA.

Let's hope 1. the 3G iPhone is coming soon and 2. O2 get their coverage sorted for all generations.

O2 have done well out of the deal. They have people locked into 18 month contracts and got the first shot at selling the iPhone. Now the concept has been proven (and now the iPhone posters have come down from the windows of my local O2 store) this might be the time that the other networks get their chance to show Apple what they can do with their little baby - after all who wants a Nokia these days?

Put 600 dollars away for the 3G model, hopefully 32gig, and better everything.

Come on May or 1st week in June.:D:apple:

Also not that it matters but the new BB 3G is do the same time frame.

i agree. I'd take June, but September is a possibility - if they get press for a v2.0 hardware 3G iPhone. Apple is in the envious position of being way ahead. As long as they have an announcement come June, and a new iPhone come September, the rivals are stuck. Why? Because whats a new phone to a customer who bought an iPhone 2 months previously?

Whilst people talk of getting the timings right for peak sales etc, an announcement by June, a new phone by September would both get the back to school crowd, and also beat the competition to their new touchscreen launches.
The SDK *is* a smash and grab :D I'd say >1 year for an updated phone is enough of a staggered refresh also!

People need to remember that AT&T doesn't offer 3G in every part of the country yet, so in all likely cases Apple will have both models out at the same time. NYC is covered by 3G so it's likely that they will strategically roll 3G iPhones out based on geographic location.

Here is a list of cities covered by AT&T with 3G data access:

So?
What about Europe and Asia? ;)

3G chipsets are backwards compatible. You can use them with EDGE, too.

I think I might agree with this time scale. However, I think it might be shifted a touch later and my constantly saying November is really a UK date.

I'd like to see Apple release the new one worldwide at the same time (or at least in established markets simultaneously).

Oh Puleeze!

My left testicle if this happens ... stop being so stupid.

OLED and 3G ... why not expect dual screens at the same time ...

The only thing that is worthwhile is WIFI, or the next gen wireless in 2009 ...

Stop drooling and get a grip ....

Guys, the iPhone is sold out in New York already!
10 million units with 3G connectivity are ordered.

What makes you think Apple is going to wait until June?

I say autumn/fall. :)

Apple could wait. They have plenty of "milking" potential in the current hardware yet. Especially come firmware 2.0. However, this ignores Apple's lofty sales targets and other big markets.

WIFI is not good on the move and for phones. The next gen you speak of is a lot longer from a full rollout even in areas that are years ahead of the US.

3G is a given. OLED and 32GB in time. But I'd be even happier if my current iPhone were more reliable for plain old voice calls. I'm no fan of Verizon, but their network is better in my area.

Lot's of pie in the sky thinking here.

Firstly, this is a rumour generated by an analyst with no factual basis whatsoever. In addition, the figure of 10 million has no fixed sales timescale attached to it so they could be selling them over a few years. The features, such as OLED displays, again are just speculation and, given the costs, unlikely.

However, it is entirely possible - nay, probable - that Apple will release a v2.0 iPhone with 3G and a few other features this year. As ever it will boil down to usability, feature set and cost as to how successful it is.

It's also interesting to note that Dulaney mentions that the European iPhone sales weren't as good as hoped because of lack of 3G. Whilst I partially agree I think that this was more down to the pricing of the phone and the lock in to unique carriers in each country, an element that isn't really understood by most US analysts who, frankly, also don't understand the nuances of the European markets.

It's "next gen" when compared to GSM and EDGE that current iPhone uses. Pentium is a "next gen" CPU when compared to 486.

Sorry, but that's a silly comparison. 3G isn't "next gen" it's "current technology" in the same way that Quad Core CPUs are "current technology".

What a joke. No one is going to know that number unless it's a high level person in Apple, and those people are not going to talk.

In addition, Apple doesn't order their stuff from one manufacturer only, thus any "oh I know the exact number they'll order" is a completely silly guess.

iPhone 2/FCC Approval

Is it possible that iphone 2 got through the FCC approval without anyone knowing? How could apple order ANYTHING without that?

Here's my take on the iPhone 2 and FCC:

Do not look for any new iPhones until sometime around the World Wide Developers Conference. Remember, Jobs announced the original iPhone at a public event (MacWorld 2007). At this year's WWDC event, the iPhone SDK is also slated to make its debut. So, what a way to announce the iPhone 2, mention about the FCC making the six month approval, that would take it right up close to the Christmas Holiday season.

My 2 Cents,
-Dan

Funny how (many) US citizens are sooo US centric.

Um, Apple is an American company. Why would they want a product that their own executives couldn't use themselves? USA first or at the same time as everyone else, period.

Sony does the same thing on its products. They come out in Japan months before they come here to the states.

Any news about a new iPhone is great news, I think its a forgone conclusion at this point.

June:

iPhone 2.0, physically and digitally.

But can we PLEASE stop pretending and getting hopes up that there will be a 32 gb model!!!!!!!!!!?

Its NOT happening. Not until the iPod touch is ready for an equally dramatic increase.

$399/ 8 gb, 3G
$499/ 16 gb, 3G

This is what it will be so expect it, get used to it. Lots of people will be replacing with the same size phone.

June would make sense since the 2.0 software is slated for a June release. If not a new pone, why 2.0 and not just 1.2? So it only makes sense that the software will be released with a new phone.
