3G iPhone Already Ordered By Apple?

Wouldn't the FCC need to approve a device before Apple starts mass producing them?

However, cell phones are in a special category, and you can give your test paperwork only to the FCC. (Since it can cost tens of thousands of dollars to run tests, you don't do this unless you're pretty darned sure you'll pass.)

At the time of submittal, things are still private. The FCC checks the results, ask privately for any clarification, and you go back and forth like that until they stamp an approval on it. At that moment the approval becomes public knowledge, or at least can be found if someone is watching.

But... you can add a request to keep the parts list, schematic, manuals and any photos (such as the test setup) private for a longer time. I believe it only costs about $300 to do this, but don't quote me on it. You can also request that the schematic and internal details be kept secret forever, so that others cannot make direct copies. Apple does this a lot.

In the case of a privacy request, all you can see are the radio test results. That's enough to know if it's 3G or not, but not much else.

Here's the thing. We all know 3G is coming, so even if one were approved, so what? It wouldn't be a surprise. It wouldn't tell us when it's going on sale, what it looks like, does it have an 800x480 screen, 32GB, keyboard, etc.

So in theory, they could wait until the day of approval and announce it. Or announce it weeks later. But that lacks the showmanship that Jobs likes. So your guess is as good as mine, as to what they'll do. I'm sure there are long time Apple watchers around here who can give us a good guess.

Can't harm to quote again.

dang. maybe it will be here sooner that i thought? i still say it's coming in June at the earliest though

I sure hope the 3G iphone performs better than my last 3G phone, which was crap. It could be the area I am in too, which I should be moving from soon.

But I'll do my usual skip a generation since I have the original iPhone, and knowing apple, the iPhone design will be in use for a couple years to come.

But who knows, maybe I'll pick one up so I can dedicate my current one to development.

responding to a statement apple wouldn't make a profit on OLED, because it would be astronomical:
You realize that you're talking about a company with fifteen billion dollars in the bank, right?

yeah but we are also talking about Apple who is notorious for:
1- overpricing memory, hard drives and accessories
2- charging for an software update and blaming that charge on "federal accounting procedures
3- removing an included "free" remote control from laptop packaging and charging $19 at retail for it
4- removing the integrated modem from laptops and forcing consumers to buy one for $49

at this rate Apple would trade off the OLED and 3G extra costs by charging more for the device and not including a) headset and b) usb charger, and instead charging $19 for headset and $29 for usb charger and cable

June would make sense since the 2.0 software is slated for a June release. If not a new pone, why 2.0 and not just 1.2? So it only makes sense that the software will be released with a new phone.

That one sentence is why we don't even need Macrumors between now and June. Its a forgone conclusion from the business analyst perspective. New, 3G iPhone available on or at least announced at WWDC. More than likely, it will be immediately available, or at least "shipping in 2 weeks" kinda thing.

I admit to not having read all the posts in this thread, but the quantity ordered doesn't look that outrageous if you consider introducing the product to china and india, countries with huge demand.

Since they have their arrangement with AT&T, has anyone had experience with 3G on AT&T? How does it compare to the great data speed on Sprint/Verizon?

I wonder if they release the 2.0 software at the same time as the 3g iPhone if current iPhone owners will be able to upgrade to 2.0.

Bring it on!!!!!
I'm ready now and happy.... I just checked and AT&T has quietly expanded 3G to the major cities of New York State as of February 1st: Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Watertown and Albany!

Before it was only down state from White Plains to NYC that had 3G.

I already have the money earmarked to get it and my wife will get my EDGE iPhone.

Just to feed the rumor mill a little more... My co-worker and I were out at lunch the other day. He says, "Dude, check it out, the next iphone is gonna be 3g." Of course, being a regular macrumors reader, I was not surprised. What did surprise me was that he has a friend, who works at an unnamed wireless carrier as a product manager. He says this guy already has the 2.0 iphone in his hands. Unfortunately that's all he knew. If I hear more I'll be sure to speak up.

I have a Sierra 881U from AT&T and a Rev. A ExpressCard from Sprint. I haven't used the Sprint card for a while, it's not as fast. The times when I did use it were to roam onto Verizon's 1xRTT network when there was no EDGE coverage for the 881U card.

So if you have good 3G coverage, yes, it's faster than EVDO Rev. A.

Excellent points. What many people don't realize about these "small details" is that each one is worth millions of dollars. Literally.

The Last iPod Touch software update that cost what $25? How many iPod touch users are there to date?

Well if there are 1 million, Apple then made 25 million in one day out of thin air. Do the actual numbers and figure out how often Apples pulls this kind of cash flow scheme.

By the time the 3G iPhone comes out, the AT&T 3G coverage will include all American cities over 100,000 people, or so I've been told.

What's funny is that I was told back in 2006 that by June 2007 all of New York State was going to be 3G....... didn't quite work out that way.....

That's why I'm FINALLY happy with the advent of 3G!

probably, but we know Apple's new way is to charge customers through the nose for a software upgrade, given they charged for similar updates at ipod touch and other formerly free accessories or integrated modems.

funny that apple may charge for this, as they make alot of ongoing money from customers via wireless plans

Makes sense to me for a join release of iPhone 3G with the new version 2.0 software.

They would not be ordering the plan to produced unless it already passed the FCC tests. Anyone done a check of the FCC site yet?

I'm thinking they will most likely insert a 3G model as a high-end option and leave the current ones at a lower price. This also means no significant hardware revamps for this model (except obviously the 3G chip and the rumored OLED screens).

Not sure if it would be limited to just the 3G chip. This would be a good opportunity for them to kick it up another notch and send the copycats running again. I have a feeling that Apple will again raise the bar and add another 6 months to a year to the rat race.

I realize that people want 3G iPhones and that its a dealbreaker in some cases, but in rural area (like where I live) 3G is totally irrelevant (unless it reduces battery life, then I'd be directly against putting it into the phone). The OLEDs would be great as well, but this is the first I've heard about it in relation to iPhone. Though it does seem like a good fit.

Seriously though, I really only want two things in the next iPhone. Copy-Paste and the slightly (almost imperceptibly) rubberized backing like the KRAZR has. My iPhone is just damn slippery in comparison and the material that Motorola uses is subtle enough not to ruin the iPhone aesthetic.

I call BS. Apple is notorious for suing websites that post rumors about them. They keep their own people in dark about products (and fire/sue them too). No way they are letting some ATT PM have an early version of a new product. Just not going to happen.

Is the current iPhone's LCD display LED backlit?

If not maybe this is what the rumour is referring to?

Sand paper works, LOL.

As do I. The people at AT&T will know about the "iPhone 2" the same day that the rest of us will. And they definitely won't get them early. Unless the guy is a top tier executive or a development person. In which case, he'll shortly lose his job for breaking the NDA he had to sign.
