on the day of, how many of you are going to the apple store and how many of you are going to the AT&T store

There is no word as of yet. What's going to happen to people that want to buy an iphone out of contract or needing a upgrade sooner. <snip>the new and great thing is that the new 3G will be activated in Store not on itunes.

I know there are dozen of other things that apple could of added to the new iphone but if they did , they wouldn't be able to come out with a 3 one now would they ? (mms, copy paste, video, landscape texting, more, so on and so on. Can't please eveyone right ? LOL

Hmm, Saladiro - how could you even think Apple hasn't forgotten cut and paste? It's on a par with having Office document opening skills, but not being able to open and edit them (unlike the Xda, which *has* 3G already thankyou very much).Fancy a wager on the C&P, video recording (back cam), horizontal writing in more apps, "and more"?

All signs indicate more to come. As for activation in store - Aside from the possible battery issue, of the O2 customer
technical support, O2 manager, CW employee, O2 rep from another store - they all don't know. Would they spring in store activation to O2 stores without getting the hardware in desktop wise to do the day's worth of

7.02am July 11. Anyone want to join in London at the main Apple store?
A quick game from the App Store before work at 9am?

Peripherals
From CW

£45 In car pack - Griffin iTrip Audio
In car holder
Griffin Power Jolt

Anyone tried this pack from CW? Is it decent value? I for one am thinking of iPhone accessories and just wanting to gauge what to have in the bank for it. I'm thinking some kind of radio transmitter, as many car's don't have docks, or 3.5mm audio in sockets, so it's the only easy way to get iTunes into the plastic molded into the dash for CD stereos.
Ciggy lighter for power. then a horizontal mount as it's going to upgrade every car I drive or be a passenger in, to SatNav enabled. Give ya best shot Garmin ;) (note, i'd hope they joined Apple and sorted out ANT chips to work with the thing, so the forerunner series or similar etc and HR monitors could sync with it. The telemetry the iPhone could pull/record/log/download wirelessly would be immense, and it'd be able to show it too/store and shift to motionbased or what have you.

Anything others would recommend? Tool Time taylor horizontal belt holder? Or proper round the neck on a leash nurse watch styley? (wouldn';t it be too heavy? I've seen O2 employees have it, andit does look useful (instant access), but then i'd imagine you're also looking at a screen guard? And what's with any Apple associated BT headset?

Thoughts?

The best phone for business. Ever*
What makes iPhone a great business phone? Simple. The same features that make it a revolutionary mobile device. With iPhone 2.0 software, iPhone does even more for your enterprise. It supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, delivering push email, calendar, and contacts. And it gives mobile users secure access to corporate resources with Cisco IPSec VPN and wireless network services with WPA2 Enterprise and 802.1X authentication.

*But we're not shipping you cut andpaste, or any way to edit Office documents.
Hardly enterprise grade...It's a start though ;) (and hardware of software limited?)

Unfortunately, to give a balanced quoting:

With support for Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, PDF, JPEG, and now iWork, attachments can be viewed exactly as they were designed to.

No Apple, not all attachments are attached to be just viewed.

Software definitely, hardware a low end possibility. Would Apple get Microsoft document editing on the iPhone prior to their own office suite? Unlikely.

The rumors about other networks in the UK getting it after a few weeks/months headstart? Hmmm.

The O2 boss sounded mighty happy with the deal they had. In other news, I'm hoping that 02/Apple will start doing a deal regarding either tethering or getting a wireless dongle deal for any iPhone contract deal. That'd bring a lot of people - it's only data, and the dongle uses 3g/edge/gprs/possibly even hsdpa too. Not like the reasonable use level would be too low for general new browsing (70Gb/month?)

So how is O2 demoing other phones:
N78 - Stylish, with great GPS, and it links to sportstracker.com
you can log how far you walk, and for how long, and share on Nokia's community. (I expect Nike to come back in the news - surely they wouldn't miss the huge sports-related opportunities (North vs South, their other regular runs in London for example). Yes, hard core walkers will be ecstatic . Walk fat boy walk...

If a satnav via A-GPS isn't really turn by turn, what do you do?

the N78 is a great multi-tasking handset. You can use the GPS function for navigation as well as sports. And one major advatage over many sat nav devices is the fact that you can just pop the phone into your pocket and use it to help you get around on foot, or use it while cycling [you'd mount your iPhone on your handlebar??]. It also has a multiformat media player and a powerful 3.2MP camera with Carl [hard as] Zeiss optics, so you can be sure that all the photos you take [with the Ramblers] will come out crystal clear and 'geotagged'...

Surely it must be expensive? Why, not at all. And stop calling me Shirley...

When you buy your Nokia N78 handset with O2 you'll receive 18months of free navigation, worth over £60!
(So that's your base figure folks)

But wait, page 8 - you can use a Sony Ericsson for a run, and it has a tracker app for monitoring your training regime andkeepingtrack of calories burned.

Doesn't Apple see that if sports manufacturers could throw in some middleware between the iPhone and their bikes, recumbents, tread mills for example, they'd have better retention (though also more usage - they like you paying for a year and not turning up I cycnically imagine...).
And for older handsets? the HGE-100 GPS enabler. Which is something that i'm thinking the v1 will get soon. Heck, couldn't you build it into a dock, and then that'd let v1 iPhones be A-GPS Sat Navs?

Where will O2's Bluebook go when mobileme comes? Kylie 26July - 4 August, page 21. Nothing to do with iPhones. You need the balance.. Ok, Got your X album Kylie fix?

O2's mobile broadband on p23:

Wireless access to the internet
Plug and play USB modem. It providesaccess to 7,500 odd WiFi hotspots, and possible if BTOpenzone is true, a few more if they're collaborating soon.
3GB data per month (excessive usage policy applies)
Speeds up to 1.8Mps
Data usage whilst roaming is subject to additional charges (i'd imagine a few thousand pounds or so... ;))

No wifi via hotspots? It then goes back to O2's mobile network and connects at 3G speeds (HSDPA?). Who needs WiMax later when you have this option now? Would Apple throw in 3G connectivity into their laptops in the next update?

And what's happening in June? O2 is upgrading the mobile network to 3.6Mbps (quote: "we'll begin doubling that to 3.6Mps from June")
Where is the Cloud?
Coffee Republics
Network Rail train stations
BAA airports
McDonalds, Little Chefs
Wetherspoons, Slug & Lettuces, O'Neills, Fuller's Greene Kings,
Holiday Inn Expresss, Esporta fitness centres, "The City of London" (yay), "and more"

coverage? O2 has updated the 3G coverage map, and to be honest, it was a bit slow, but if you go in-store they have a more features version, where you can get a lot moredetail on hand about all the towers 2g 3g, planned updates, planned outages and all sorts. Look out for those lovely yellow triangles, and purple areas ;)

As they say: You're likely to be connected to the internet via Wifi speeds from The Cloud/3G from O2, if you're :
on a train, in the park, in town, on the busm in a taxi, in an office... I don't smoke, but heck, if i "suddenly started" would i be able to get breaks to smoke on actor's ciggies and play SuperMonkey Ball?*

O2'smobile broadband's wifi is unlimited (TOC apply as always)

Mobile broadband pricing (as of now till then):
Only available to existing O2 customers. (does that count to those who were on contract, then went to Simplicity? 'd have to check)
18 months, £20 a month 3GB a month, unlimited wifi
Monthly, £20 a month, but £120 for the dongle. 3GB, Unlimited wifi.

Which is why people want tethering!
webmap.o2.co.uk/map/map/Page_find.asp Ibelieve. Google is your friend.

9to5mac has an insider saying BTOpenzone and tethering are coming, but it might be O2's choice to offer.

Just to go back to Xda - It has Copilot Live 7 the sat nav pack bundled free with the Xda Orbit 2 on O2. What is it?
Choice of 3D and 3D views
Navigate to postcode, Outlook contact, or house number
Street maps of UK, with POI
Safety cam alerts with free updates
Car mount and charger.

I don't think O2 will miss a trick( or at least CW might pick up the slack with peripherals). It's going to be an expensive July!

5/5 for Orbit 2, 3/5 for Xda Stellar (they actually include reader review numbers, not sure if there is some site on O2 which it pulls it from, or if this is post/email? because if it's online, macrumors could get a little campaign going - I think we can beat 24 reviews!\
Edit - ww.o2.co.uk/reviewmyphone. I for one think that if you get one, this is a great way to promote what you think of it.

75 pages, and the iPhone is featured...... Once, p72. Inside a Piel Frama Case. I believe the July issue might have a bit of a more Apple love.

0:06 minutes in - no background app whiners have been shut up.
push badges, alert sounds, textual alerts with buttons. It scales.
Push, etc shows Apple wants to move into being your server. Which means they control quality, uptime, and speed.

Like 1/:04 and other polaces, Steve mentions feedback, another sign cut and paste is coming.

Apps Store for Enterprise means it's pushing iTunes to Enterprise. Clever. Which is a big move. Because IT departments don't normally let stuff onto the desktop necessarily. This will mean a partial if not more full roll out at enterprises that want to use it
1:07 mobileme

1:00:00 - I don't think many people will actually need the feature that much.

Someone going to solve the iPHone salesman problem? With geotagging of your to do list, presumably you could do this for things that requireyou to travel.

They had the shake to remove on the MIM. I missed that the first time.

I agree with you, Tom. I think another "feature" will be announced sometime near the 29th as a 1st birthday present to the iphone. Maybe the much deserved cut-and-paste feature or mms, or a better cam, or additional gmaps stuff, etc. There are so many things that could be added to the iphone!

so check this out....

I was watching the mornig news (in NY), and there was a story about some guys who posted a "free iPhone" add on Craigs list, and then about 20 people showed up and got robbed! Kinda sad, but kinda funny.

....gotta wonder how us crazy americans forget to leave the house in the morning with out our "common sense"

on another note, here is my thing with the cut and paste, given that the iPhone is all touch, i wuld think it would be very hard to , lets say highlight a sentence in an email message, simply because ones finger may be thicker than the sentence its self.

or are you guys on a totally different page then i am....

On a kind of random note - not sure if anyone would know this, and i searched but to no avail - I am an additional subscriber on an AT&T family plan. So my question is this: Can I just put the $35 *new* iphone data+text plan on my current account (like you could do with the 1st gen) in order to get the new iphone, or will I have to get a completely new contract and data plan altogether?

Thanks in advance!

p.s. I no longer work at AT&T, so I'm not sure if there were any memos describing this particular type of situation... In case any of you were wondering...

I believe you will have to sign for another 2 years. Butt, if your pre existing plan, was lets say 10,000 minutes for $20, you are grandfathered in, meaning no matter how long you stay with AT&T, you can never lose the plan you started with. I have seen this many times, where I had a great plan, told friends, and then it went away, and all phone carriers honored it (I think it's standard across the industry) you should have no problem adding the $35 for the internet. If you can, I have the wife, bro, and mom on the family plan, and the more the better. It keeps getting cheaper divided by more people.

in regards to signing a new 2 years it does kind of suck, but look at it this way, we all are pretty much going to have a cell phone for life, so might as well sign a 50yr contract

now, there have been rumors the $200 and $300 px are for new joiners and those eligible for an upgrade, meaning after 1 1/2 years with ATT, you can get a new phone at the discounted px (I think it’s a year and half). if not, you may have to pay $400 or $500 Just speculating based on how the have handled other phones. I called ATT, and they actually told me, the have no official word on cost per existing plan, or renewing, or paying full cost, or upgrading yet

I have a feeling they are going to treat it like any other phone, if you are eligible, you get the discount, if not you pay$$$$, it does suck and I have complained, but they don't care. they lose money on the phone and make on the contract (as I was told)

Thanks, that's what I figured. :)

saladiro,

invisibleShield (IMO) is a better product. I have used both. I went with BodyGuardz initially because it looked to be the same and shipping was less. I was disappointed.

IS seems thicker to me. My BG scratched easily, and they are supposed to be scratch proof.

Anyway, these products will be nice to have with the iPhone, for protection from scratches and it will also make the device less slippery and finger print resistant.

hmmm....which one was the clearest? In the past, I have always had a problem with various skins, (with the ones i used)

each one seems to compromise the true screen color, brightness, and clarity a bit

Lol - (Observer/Guardian) (Guardian's standards usually slip at the weekend, especially Tech and Science related articles it seems (e.g. check Ben Goldacre articles))

Apple's guru calls a new tune

Subtitle?
Steve Jobs launched the multimedia iPhone G3 with his usual panache. But the hi-tech pioneer is after a bigger audience this time, writes Tim Webb

1) Jobs was a co-founder
2) The launch was a letdown?
3) No real suprises ? Oh really Tim, funny that - I hear The Tech Editor was rather suprised with A-GPS being in. Heck, look at his predictions (subject to change, I think he's got the ajority right given a year).

Is the 3G iPhone "what most people would just call a new phone?"
- Not come mid July I feel. It's an M&S phone Tim.
"They believed that technology would give power to the people. They played this image up - but they probably believed it at the beginning."
They still believe it I'd say.
"Analysts say that" - sloppy.
"Apple, which is on track to meet its original target of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of this year" - No, it's on track to smash it and hit their stretch target.

I can see why the Guardian doesn't allow comments on half its articles...

Tethering
Not for AT&T it seems
So it's AT&T rather than Aple that is blocking it?

Anyone else think that mid July might see something else from Apple? This is based solely on the fact Intel is expected to launch Montevina platform July 14th. Of note also from the frontpage round up - next major Apple event scheduled = MWSF Jan 5-9 2009.

I am no philosopher, but with out bad news, good news would not exist...

I am not sure what people expected in this new iPhone

there is only so much one can cram into a small little device like that

we know its major improvements, and that should be enough to satisfy people and beyond

but there are always those who want more, do they want this phone, to sing, write, and dance?

out of curiosity, why were others disappointed?
(i will be honest, i would have loved it to be as thin as the ipod touch, but we can't have our cake and eat it!)

just remember.....a flute without holes ...is not a flute

facts on thickness of iphone 3G

"Design

Though the iPhone 3G is thinner at the edges than its predecessor, the phone measures a hair thicker (0.48 inches versus 0.46 inches) in the gut.

The other measurements are the same except that it weighs just the slightest bit less (4.7 ounces versus 4.8 ounces). "

I would speculate August for a big back to school reveal. Although this would not be iPhone related. Most likely upgrades of the iMac and desktops. Perhaps a redesign of the MacBook and Pro. New iPod lineup. And quite possibly the MID device that has been rumored.

Tom....

i know this is prob. some where in this thread, but the 3G will have "push" capacity correct? I have Gmail, and i interpret this that as soon as a message is sent to gmail, its goes right to my 3G

or is the 3G only for a business exchange server?

so much info....can't remember it all...

I know I will never be Tom, but I assume this is what you're looking for:

Push IMAP Gmail

HTH! :D

cool...so IMAP is instant and POP is like "auto refresh eg every 5 min"?

much appreciate

That guy's blog is not right Justin.

IMAP and POP are different methods of sending and receiving email. Push technology is separate. I do not believe that the iPhone supports GMail's Push technology (yet?).

Currently the iPhone only supports Yahoo push (I believe). In 2.0 software update, it will support Exchange Server push technology as well as Mobile Me.

Push gives you near instant email, whereas regular POP or IMAP accounts use "pull" technology (checks your email at regular intervals). Similar to your Mail app on a Mac or Outlook Express on your PC.

got it....

assuming an exchange server is out of the budget, how much is mobile me?

if i can't afford either, what's the shortest interval i can set to refresh my gmail?

Mobile Me is $99/year

not sure about gmail

Say hello to a direct debit to Apple :)

I think people are now starting to catch on that the iPhone is going to be a big thing, and that the talk of big changes coming from it is actually with substance. I've been busy in London, but I can see through going to different phone stores that the market is there - and Apple for the most part will make it lok effortless. When the iPhone is out, the expectations of users for simplicity of use, and quality of responsive non crashing UI will raise higher (I have an NSeries Nokia and it stalls like hell trying to load 9to5mac.com about 45kB in, and it can't render anything worth reading (making macrumors a no-no)).
Orange could only come up with an N95 that suited the preferences I gave (known 3G iPhone specs). O2 is promoting the N95 like crazy (full page back ad on the London freebie magazines for example) and i'd imagine they might be running down on their inventory.

The interesting thing is that it might also show how O2 will handle GPS/maps - they give 18 months free with a contract. I'd imagine that Apple has set an upper limit to cost, and partners can charge as low as they want. The fact that the iPhone at the keynote was in a rubberlike shield - i'm still thinking there are more suprises. Apple is stringing it out well!

With 3 odd weeks to go tomorrow - i'm wondering when Walt Mossberg will send the review - assuming it's a good one, it might just pour gasoline onto the 3G iPhone fire. The analysts are putting AAPL as performing better than their previous estimates, which is a good sign. (Apple usually overdelivers, understates what it might achieve. (keeping its stretch goals to itself)).

I think Snow Leopard is being underrated so far too - they're going to give people CRAY supercomputer level power. (More like CRAY 2 hopefully! (and it's interesting to read about how CRAYs were designed if you have the time)).

With the new reports of a LOT more anticipation and pre-notification of interest in the UK, i'm feeling that camping outside Apple might be a fun thing to do. Might even make London BBC news before breakfast... (will have to go find the link for the London meet ups - anyone know the link?)
Anyhow, till I have more time on a better laptop, watch for Walt ;)
(And also for Apple to bump something possibly prior to the iPhone, or just after it - the halo effect will be huge, so they'll market efficiently to use that I imagine, they'll want the other PC kit there too. (ACDs? (the rumours of Hi def iSights are just too appealing but it's just a piece of code...))

'I think Snow Leopard is being underrated so far too - they're going to give people CRAY supercomputer level power. (More like CRAY 2 hopefully! (and it's interesting to read about how CRAYs were designed if you have the time)). "

in regards to snow leopard, I have a mac book pro 2.2 ghz....I was browsing the internet a few days ago, and I came across some discussions that you needed a substantially "powerful" mac in order to successfully utilize snow leopards capability...

does any one know if this is true?

I think basically the meaning is that Snow Leopard's true improvements in capability come from larger multi-core chips. The more cores/CPUs and GPUs / more powerful chips, the more improvemtns either in sheer numbers &/or in % improvement will be seen. So a Mac Pro may well see much more % increase in power, as it can pack more in.

I think it bears repeating as to the potential - I spoke recently to a member of a certain supercomputing firm, who deals with sales (If I said it wasn't Intel, I think that's a clue). He was unaware of Intel and Apple's progress in this field (and I think it's fair to say that not everyone in the tech field really followed the WWDC/ other announcements strongly enough to recognise the potential that wasn't being overstated in short terse description of Snow Leopard. Apple as a computer creator, is working hard on the multi-core problem (how to best get the most use out of the multiple cores form CPUs these days, and how also to use GPU power for general CPU job use).
Is Dell putting this in? I'd imagine IBM might be, but then I wouldn't be able to say...

Anything with 2 or more cores in will see a benefit, and anything 4 or above will see more benefit (in comparison to the current usage levels of parallel core usage by programs). By letting taking care of it and letting the developers not have to try and code for it, Apple will be doing developers a favor, and in turn, giving customers a hell of a speed boost. I think that the speed comparisons between Leopard and Snow Leopard will be decent (they could perhaps give Grand Central et al to Leopard, but I feel they will use it as a wedge to get people to shell out for the OS update. Which is fair enough.)

It's so frustrating sometimes when it isn't really seen by IT and higher levels the potential kicking in now and in a year for Apple in the workplace and in enterprise, and the potential short term gains by getting in there early and getting ready for the ride.

More later.
