unlikely that they will keep the 8gb model because if they can fit 32gb in the ipod touch they can do it in the iphone. but then again they could keep the 8 gb and add the 32 gb but unlikely
some people like my mom and dad who have iphones with like 1.5gb on their iphones would gladdly take the 300 dollar 4gb iphone

First of all,

You are nuts to think the price would actually drop! That is CRAZY! Even though the price on flash memory has dropped, prices will either stay or most likely rise, even with a RECESSION! Second, any iPhone will never be slimmer than the iPod Touch, since phone capabilities are almost impossible to get that thin, and be expected to function as flawlessly as Apple demands, no chance on either of these matters, SORRY!:apple::mad:

Oh, and AT&T will likely raise data connection prices for 3G, because running EDGE versus 3G bandwidths is quite a bit more expensive!

Well, I agree that the price is unlikely to drop but I think it is less likely that the price with rise. Also, if they use different components then the iPhone can be slimmer than the CURRENT iPod touch. However, the rumor said it would be slightly slimmer, may not be so thin as to reach the level of thin that the touch is.

obviously you never held a Japanese phone... they can be that thin and carry that much function.

I think they probably have the power to make the iPhone thinner than it currently is, but I doubt they can do it by a significant amount.

As for storage, I don't see anything wrong with them retaining the current sizes and introducing larger sizes later, but who knows.

I really hope they add a front-facing cam for videoconferencing.

A consumer product announcement at WWDC?? Doubtful.

Since the iPhone will most likely take center stage from a development stand point its not that unlikely. I can't see there being much news on the Mac platform.

the 8 gig needs to go

The 8GB model will stay for a while. Its attractive to many people. I mean how many other phones can boast that they have that much storage. Maybe it will come down in price along with the others if a 32GB model is released.

as i said the 8gb iphone is for older people that have like 20 cds on their iphone and barely use it as an ipod... but as a smartphone

Nothing new here. For so long I have been answering Yahoo! Answers with my guess of 8 GB $399 and 16 GB $499 (though my twist is keeping the EDGE...8GB $299 and EDGE 16 GB $399)

Less "plasticky" than glass and metal? I guess stone would be kind of nifty.

I'd jump on a $599 32 GB in a heartbeat.

I think they're referring to the plastic back portion where the wifi and cell radio are housed. I always wondered why they didn't integrate the antenna into chrome rim around the screen. This would be consistent with the pictures of the new 3g iPhone that were released which had a solid back piece. I've been thinking about colorwaring my iPhone but if the new one is all black, then I'd be happy with that, as I'd want it to be mainly black with a little blue.

As for 32gb chips, they already have compact flash in these sizes. I'm not sure about how small they need to be for the iPhone, but it shouldn't be long before these sizes are able to fit on one chip. Definitely possible in the next few months given the speed of flash memory development lately. It makes a lot of sense to drop the 8gb model, especially with memory prices coming down so much lately. What really counts in the next iPhone is the amount of RAM installed. At least 512mb is a must or we will keep seeing frequent app crashes. This would also allow SDK apps to run in the background.

For me, other than RAM the deal breaker is GPS. I will be splitting my time between Kansas City which has 3g and Springfield most of the time, at college, which still doesn't have 3g. Now if 2.0 update allows me to connect to my school's wifi, then that would also help. AT&T really needs to expand their 3g coverage. Otherwise there isn't a big incentive for people to upgrade. I expect the 3g iPhone to also have an updated camera. Most of the leading cell phone companies are featuring upwards of 5mp cameras in their upper class products. Although, I will always take a lower noise camera over a higher megapixel one. Video recording is a must also.

Anyone think they will incorporate Intel's Atom 800mhz 80milliwatt idle / 0.65w under load chips? That would totally kill everything. Although I think only 2/3, at best, of the things I've mentioned will make it into the shipping product. Thats how it always works, in the best case scenario at that.

What? Nooooo. I was hoping for 16GB @ $399 and 32GB @ $499. I think 8GB at $399 is a bit ridiculous considering the price of memory goes down pretty quickly, especially as the memory gets smaller.

Maybe less plasticky = anodized aluminum?

Oh, and AT&T will likely raise data connection prices for 3G, because running EDGE versus 3G bandwidths is quite a bit more expensive!

Or, just as technology progresses, EDGE 2.5 will be like the "dial-up" of the internet, whereas 3G is "DSL", and 4G is "Cable". Point being, at&t can lower cost of EDGE and have that pricing tier taken over for 3G that is "replacing" EDGE (hopefully). Besides, with lower data rates, at&t can attract more potential smartphone subscribers, let alone iPhone subscribers, to be locked into at&t's two year service and monthly revenue stream.

Just like airline deregulation eventually gave us $49.00 tickets and increased dramatically the number of airline passengers versus $499.00 tickets and flying for the priveledge few (as well as a host of other "flying public" nightmares), so too can at&t keep it's pricing right about where it currently is, if they are smart!

i don't think they can fit 32gb in the current iphone unless they change the case

The iPod Touch has 2 Flash chips. The iPhone only has space for one due to the other wireless hardware installed.

If they don't have a 32 GB I am going to be so PISSED :( I'd pay $599, I don't care!

ATT must do their part in the next couple of weeks.
Lower rates, better plans, better service.

Apple will not be happy...

AMEN AMEN AMEN!!! If AT&T pulls some crap like that of raising the plans because of 3G I'm pretty sure I will erupt in absolute furry. They need to not only keep pricing the same but they should lower their plans. From what all my friends have on other networks AT&T seems behind on pricing, not to mention the networks we have in this country are crap anyway so what exactly are we getting raped for??? Same goes for internet in the USA

To the people that talked about the iPhone space

The iPhone and touch have 2 slots (forgot what they are called). On the iPhone, when is for the communications chip, and the other is storage. On the touch, the 2 slots are used as storage.

As far as this rumor goes, they just used common sense. No duh they will mention it at WWDC. It won't ship though until 2 weeks after... June 27th

Same setup as last year. Its going to be just as crowded and high demand if not more.

My first Mac, a PowerPC 6200CD, only had 12GB... sigh...:apple:

No GPS = no buy for me.

Come on Apple, don't pull a "maybe in the next version" stunt with GPS - now is not the time to dink around with manipulative upgrade schemes. The market is yours for the taking - and if you don't take advantage, your competitors will.

As for "slightly thinner" - personally I'd rather have "slightly thicker" with a bigger battery inside.

I think AT&T Unlimited Data is $30, and I think that includes 3g. I just checked their website quickly, so it might not be the case. But didn't their EDGE service used to be higher before the iPhone? Perhaps the 3g service will drop in price a little bit, but doubt it would go down to $20. Maybe $25.

Does anyone think the 3g iPhone will require a 3g data contract? If it has lots of cool new features, I will probably get it. But where I go to school doesn't have 3g yet, so it would be kind of pointless since I could only use it at home. Do you think the EDGE plan would still be valid and then I could upgrade whenever my town gets 3g? I just wish I knew if we were on the list of cities that AT&T is installing 3g this year. There are supposed to be like 80 new ones. Probably mostly in areas of Cali and the NE. Midwest usually gets the shaft.

ATT will not raise the price. Right now they do not distinguish whether you use 3G or EDGE. Doesn't make sense to change pricing. The more 3G they get up and running the more plans and phones they will sell. Where I go to college in Madison, WI just got 3G a few weeks ago, but where I live in Wausau probably will not get 3G for a couple years. Just because the 3g iPhone comes along doesn't mean they change the structure of their pricing.

It already is anodized aluminum. I remember seeing an article where a scientist put his iPhone into an electron microscope and said thats what it was mostly. Just the plastic part on the bottom should disappear, probably building the antenna, like I mentioned earlier, into the chrome rim somehow.

The 32gb will probably be a premium at first. If they keep the 8gb around, then I doubt we will also see 32gb. In that scenario, they will most likely update the iPhone in the fall with 16/32gb at the current 8/16gb price points.

What's keeping you from connecting to their Wi-Fi?

iphone price INCREASE

If I were Apple: I think first generation should be continued at its current price and second generation should cost $200 more, assuming feature set provides sufficient value. AND I would include a $100 rebate for new service contract on both generations. This will extract additional revenue from exporters while actually reducing the price of current hardware by $100 if you're using the US phone as intended. They should announce the above at WWDC but not ship in US until 9/23/08. By telling everyone the next generation will cost so much more, they won't cannibalize sales of first generation. Just to make us happy, give us the rebate starting June 10 on EDGE iphones. If they are going to sell 3G worldwide unlocked, (as now rumored in Australia) it will be impossible to overprice it. Demand will be hunormous.

Apple has a lot of business sense...

Apple has a lot of business sense- that is why it is the most respected company around. So, for business reasons, the 3G iPhone will be introduced and shipped on the same day. Remember the "Beat Goes On" event where the new iPod's were introduced? All of the iPods that replaced a current model shipped that day. Only the iPod touch shipped later, because it was a completely new product. So the 3G iPhone, if it is introduced at WWDC, will also ship on the same day. After all, who would buy an EDGE iPhone if they knew that a new one was coming out?

For the same reasons, AT&T will not increase the cost of their iPhone plans- people would get mad, and they would lose business. So 3G iPhone will be announced and shipped on the same day.
