does anyone know if 3G phones have better reception? cuz ATT sucks so bad it's not even funny. i live at the bottom of a small hill in a major metropolitan area and i had to get a landline at my apt cuz i have no signal. and ATT says 'we dont guarantee service'. they also told me that they have the 'largest coverage area' to which i responded that you may have the largest coverage area but it has the crappiest service.

my girlfriends Cricket phone works here with 3 bars FFS. so does my parents' Verizon phones. ugh.

Thinner is usually good and all but the iphone and especially the touch are already very thin. Much thinner and I don't feel it would be comfortable to hold as a phone anymore.

Not only is Steve obsessed with thin, but I'm sure he wants the iPhone to have/hold/maintain the record for thinnest smartphone.

Same thing for MBA.

steve boi is so obsessed that he gone a bit crazy :D
i really like the mba but he called itself as the most thinnest notebook on earth... 10 years ago there was already a notebook with the measurements off 1,66cm.

i know its off topic right now but i have a question...
my iphone sometimes doesnt react to my commands or itself shutdowns videos and i didnt touch anything. any solutions?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

there's more rumors now then there was before the phone came out.
A rumor a day till June. That will keep us busy.
If its only adding 3g then I'm out. But more new features and my 8g's on ebay.

If you don't get a good signal then you obviously don't live in a major metropolitan area as you claim. I get five bars all the time here.

The more I think about it the less likely it seems that WWDC will be where they announce/release the 3G iPhone. The only product that Apple has ever announced there (to my knowledge) is the Mac Pro, not exactly a mass market product. WWDC is for developers, and future OSX/Mac products, not consumer releases.

Apple will probably have a specific event for the 3G iPhone and App Store launch...

ATT will not raise the price. Right now they do not distinguish whether you use 3G or EDGE. Doesn't make sense to change pricing. The more 3G they get up and running the more plans and phones they will sell. Where I go to college in Madison, WI just got 3G a few weeks ago, but where I live in Wausau probably will not get 3G for a couple years. Just because the 3g iPhone comes along doesn't mean they change the structure of their pricing.

Man I hope everyone who has mentioned a price increase reads this post. How can they distinguish what network someone is on most of the time or from minute to minute? Would someone call them up and say, "I should be getting the cheaper data plan because I don't live in a 3G area?" For those who have mentioned a price increase with 3G, can you please explain how you think ATT will/can implement it knowing that you can move in and out of a 3G area frequently?

This does sound pretty logical. Upgrade the data speed, and then turn around and upgrade the capacity next year when the higher density NAND flash chips become available (to enable 32GB). Especially if the unit is somehow thinner - they probably wont have the space on PCB for another two flash chips to get up to 32GB.

They dont want to put out the perfect hardware immediately, then you wont have reason to buy the iphone again in a year when they upgrade the capacity. Also why the chip they're planning doesn't have HSUPA for fast uploads. They can introduce direct youtube video uploads then.

I sure as hell hope the iPhone 3G is firmware upgradable to HSUPA. I mean HSDPA is great and all, but it only speeds up the downlink side of the connection. Also, in addition to just pure throughput, HSDPA and HSUPA vastly reduce the connection latency from 300-500ms each way to ~75ms. If anyone doesn't know what the **** all this nonsense is that i'm talking about, I made a chart yesterday for Appleinsider forum, so i'll post it here too:

As for 32gb chips, they already have compact flash in these sizes. I'm not sure about how small they need to be for the iPhone, but it shouldn't be long before these sizes are able to fit on one chip. Definitely possible in the next few months given the speed of flash memory development lately. It makes a lot of sense to drop the 8gb model, especially with memory prices coming down so much lately. What really counts in the next iPhone is the amount of RAM installed. At least 512mb is a must or we will keep seeing frequent app crashes. This would also allow SDK apps to run in the background.

Anyone think they will incorporate Intel's Atom 800mhz 80milliwatt idle / 0.65w under load chips? That would totally kill everything. Although I think only 2/3, at best, of the things I've mentioned will make it into the shipping product. Thats how it always works, in the best case scenario at that.

I doubt they change any of the core hardware, such as the 128MB RAM, the ARM processor with graphics chip, etc. Having two different performance capabilties in the wild would make it a major pain to develop on the platform. Think about a game developer tuning the game to have the best graphics while at the same time keeping an accpetable framerate.... If they change the 3G iphone, then you'll have to optimize the game for two different hardware profiles and capabilities. Increasing the RAM would have less of an undesirable effect, but I still bet Apple keeps system-spec parity with iPhone 2G.

Swapping an ARM11 for the Intel Atom is totally out of the question. First of all, the current Menlow platform is way to big and power hungry for a cellphone. The second gen Atom platform, "Morrestown", a "system-on-a-chip" may lower power requirements enough to be used in an iPhone, but that won't be out for at least another year or two. Also, the same problem applys with maintaining two code bases and platforms for ARM and x86.

If they don't have a 32 GB I am going to be so PISSED :( I'd pay $599, I don't care!
AMEN AMEN AMEN!!! If AT&T pulls some crap like that of raising the plans because of 3G I'm pretty sure I will erupt in absolute furry. They need to not only keep pricing the same but they should lower their plans. From what all my friends have on other networks AT&T seems behind on pricing, not to mention the networks we have in this country are crap anyway so what exactly are we getting raped for??? Same goes for internet in the USA

First of all you should relax. lol. Secondly, don't expect AT&T to LOWER their plans while UPGRADING them to 3G. They already have very competive prices on the iPhone plans. I don't know what carrier your friends have, but Verizon is certainly more expensive for the same minutes plus unlimited internet (aka 10GB or whatever). Adding unlimited to any regular phone plan is $49.95 more as of a few months ago, not sure if it has changed since.

A few days ago, I came across some information on AppleInsider regarding a forward-facing camera on the 3G iPhone. I'm on an iPhone right now, so I can't link to the page, but it detailed how hundreds of micro-cameras would be meshed with the LCD display. The cameras would each take a portion of a picture, and then software would price the mini-pictures together to create a full picture. The patent for this came about 3 years BEFORE iphone's introduction, so perhaps they would build this into the 3G iPhone. It would be great for corporate users, so they could hold video conferences wherever they are. Lately, Apple has been taking on corporate users, so who knows? I think it's a great idea.

That sounds like cool technology, but it obviously sounds expensive, hard to manufacturer with ow yields, and just way to complicated for something so simple. Most decent 3G phones in Europe and Asia have dual cameras. You get a 2-5Mpixel primary on the back and a small 0.3Mpixel (640x480) forward facing camera for video chat. I hope the iPhone FINALLY popularizes this functionality in the USA.

what i hate most about my iphone is that i am so afraid of slipping it away... the aluminium is just so slippery. if u are walking downstairs and are in a hurry it might happen really easily. maybe they could give the metall more texture.

Get a rubber case.. they work great, look good, make it easy to hold onto, and there are literally hundreds available..

One of the only areas available to make the iPhone thinner is the front glass. The problem is that thin, cheap glass is much more likely to break or get scratched. If they went this route the iPhone would become very unpopular in a hurry, because nobody likes to spend hundreds of dollars on easily damaged electronics.

Personally, I dont need more than 4gb.

Better camera? Man! Its a phone to begin with. The current camera is perfect for what it does and IMHO is better than any other phone I've ever used. How about this: Leave the phone as it is, give the camera a zoom, higher resolution and charge $950. Happy?

I'm just hoping that the new phone isnt more $$ and doesnt just have 3G and more space. 3G *might* get me to buy but more space isnt somthing I value.

Got burned by the price drop last time. So I wont be one of those waiting in line in the middle of the night for this one, unless it's a major overhaul of the last unit. (Actually would NEVER wait in line for ANYTHING unless it was a liver or kidney).

If the changes are merely the addition of 3G - and it had better actually be 3.5G actually - and cosmetic then I can't see the point in getting one.

They must do better. UI aside Apple are already over a year behind with the iPhones technology.

What does exactly with the "accelerometer tweaks" entail?

It'd probably just be more sensitive. I was playing with an iPod Touch in bed this morning and sometimes it wouldn't rotate to landscape, needing a little shake.

They must do better. UI aside Apple are already over a year behind with the iPhones technology.

Yea, just look at all the 16gb, 3D accelerometer, ear sensor phones on the market these days.

The only technology lacking inside the iPhone is the data communication chip. And it's also missing entirely a GPS radio.

The N95 has memory expansion slots. At the moment you can get 12Gb cards but 16Gb will be with us shortly. It also has an accelerometer. As for ear sensor, only the iPhone actually needs this.

In addition the iPhone doesn't have a video camera, an acceptable resolution still camera and a number of expected software features plus the features you've already mentioned.

Like it or not it's behind.

how quickly people get greedy....

What? Nooooo. I was hoping for 16GB @ $399 and 32GB @ $499. I think 8GB at $399 is a bit ridiculous considering the price of memory goes down pretty quickly, especially as the memory gets smaller.

Maybe less plasticky = anodized aluminum?

How much was the 4GB model before the price drop?! People bought those up in a heartbeat. Now people want 4x's as much memory for the same price or cheaper.

I think it's funny how people want more for the same price or cheaper in less than 10 months from :apple:. 3G, 2-4x's the memory for cheaper? Dream on. Maybe in a year or two. But then people will be screaming bloody nurder when they don't have 128GB for $199.

Nerd tax people, nerd tax. If you can't afford it, you don't need it.

WWDC is a perfect time to launch the App Store, which is the result of the SDK. Both of those things are tied directly to developers. And what better way to usher in the new 2.0 firmware than with a 3G/GSM iPhone, a true world phone that is supported in most Asian countries?

...If AT&T pulls some crap like that of raising the plans because of 3G I'm pretty sure I will erupt in absolute furry...

Great balls of fury! Get ready for a price upgrade - no way AT&T is going to keep their newer wide-spread 3g at $20; I'd guess there will be at least a $30 price point while regular users (non-iPhone) pay a $20 premium over that.:rolleyes:

okay.. when was it ever plasticky..??
i think it's a little too glassy and metallic for a phone. maybe not. but i'm **** scared to drop it. and it does slip. oh well.!!

how could an even slimmer case give more room for larger storage capacities

maybe because of a smaller 3g chip. not sure. or maybe NAND flash being smaller.

But as we just explained, the iPhone has, well, phone parts in it, which limits how many other things you can put into it. Like some people a few posts above said, the iPod Touch has two slots for memory, whereas the iPhone only has one.

But this still doesn't explain why the touch is thinner than iPhone. That just explains why iPhone's memory will always be less than the iPod touch.

anyone get my drift? my control of the language isn't that great to mount a full-fledged explanation...:(

And another point. Don't you guys think the current iphone's battery isn't that great? My point is, even though steve's solved the 3G chip battery problem, we would still have a battery life like now. Is no one put off by this notion?

bring it on!

3G, 32 gB, hopefully almost identical in form and feel. I'll thrown down $599. i will take a loan if necessary.

THAT'S ALL I AM ASKING FOR. JUNE, please.

Tether anyone?

man -

3G, 3.5G, 3.25G - all sound great ----

It would be truly wonderful to finally have the better "features" from old treo 700 on me IpHonE - mainly I'm thinking tether to laptop for those unconnected train rides...

i gotta work all the time, u know!

i have seen the ssh tether hack, makes me think come June this will be all over the place, officially or otherwise, neat and easy... just hope so - and AT&T network can handle it

Memory: To have reasons to buy iPod Touch ;p remember smartphone is a smartphone, and media player is a media player, witch one need more flash memory? ;p media player ofcorse

Thinner? Because iPod Touch is iPhone with less hardware? ;p It simple to even ask why

I think they'll keep the iPhone 2's platform the same, of course using 3G instead of 2G (3.5G/2.5G actually). This will keep the software platform consistent.

They might use more power efficient parts - e.g., process shrinks for the CPU/RAM.

They may also go for a slimmer display assembly, possibly using OLED even (possibly maybe perhaps) which uses less power.

These changes would allow them to slim the battery, and thus the iPhone. Also another year of design tweaks must help a lot.

Now the iPhone 3? That will alter the platform (whilst retaining backwards compatibility). Maybe a higher resolution screen, with a faster but still ARM based CPU and graphics, and double the memory. This will live from 2009-2011 as a consistent platform.
