2nd Gen iPhone already being tested?
In reading the Engadget article it mentions that " we've got it on authority that the second-gen iPhone is already well into testing" Could this mean that a first production sample is already over at the FCC getting approval?
Based on what happened last year, the 1st gen iPhone was submitted for FCC approval around early February and news of it hit the Net around the middle of May. Normally, the FCC can grant a 45 day confidentially period to a Manufacturer if they request it until the report is made public. Apple probably needed the time to finish up the software code, programs, production, etc. which don't require FCC approval if you make any changes.
Teh testing that the FCC would do would be mostly for te radio components (i.e the 3G chipset, wi-fi. bluetooth, GPS). Teh CC doesn't care if the device actually is usable or not, they only care if the transmitters don't affect other devices.
The type of testing that Engadget hints at is more about the quality of service of the phone and how it interacts with the software.
My guess is that the 2nd gen iPhone has already been submitted for FCC approval (and may have already gotten it) and that now they are testing out the new elements being integrated (2.0 software, GPS, other secret stuff, etc)
