This caught my eye; could you expand on it please?

I think what your looking for is... Intel is going to stop production of the current licensed ARM CPU, they are making the new one that's 1.0ghz-2.0ghz (I think that's the numbers), Been all over the place lately.

More ARM CPU facts and stuff here... Note the 6th and 7th generation versions.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_architecture

Intel is not the only supplier to Apple for ARM cpu's. They still work with Broadcom and Freescale as well. But in the case I was speaking 1/3rd is stopping production of the current licensed technology to build the newer model. So that would estimate the new strongarm cpu MAY be ready for the iphone sooner than later. Intel's spending would presume sooner at this point but without solid 2nd/3rd qtr estimates I can't say for 100% sure. I was pretty sure 2009 was the projected date but Bloomsburg reported Summer 2008 it would be available.

Lets say Intel's SA is ready as of July. And Apple releases two iPhone levels coming this May/June. Consumer and Pro. Let's take the current model, call it Pro, and take this concept and call it Consumer (for now let's just say). Consumer versions could carry on with ARM based cpu's from BC and FC without change, thus reducing their price in the 8/16gb. Pro models with the enterprise consumers in mind would need a bit more punch to run certain applications so Intel could supply the SA model to Apple who would then release a pro version of the iPhone at 32gb. Seeing as Apple's recent push into the business class is in fact carrying momentum very rapidly a Pro version of the iphone is likely (how much is anyone's guess) but most are sure a lower priced thus lower spec'd iPhone is coming. Especially if Gartner is right about 45mil phones in 2009 if not by 2008.

To reach these numbers you would need a slightly larger product line. Starting at $199 (possible free if subsidized) for an 8Gb all plastic iphone mini (just saying to coincide with the iPod lineup). At $249 is a 16gb version. Then in the Pro-Sumer side we have the updated 3G/GPS/Video conferencing monster. Now to do two-way video we need a faster cpu to render everything so Intel's SA would step in nicely and start the pricing at $349 for an 8gb, then up from there as more memory is needed.

Being that we are going to be holding databases, video, and other such applications on these phones. A medical database worth a lick, not the current proposed one, would consume about 5gb of space alone (at least it does in Filemaker).

Taking into account the recent news I've been watching from other suppliers it would seem dual models COULD be likely. But Intel's pushing their new SA chip and ceasing production of the current ARM. So that puts one supplier out on current CPU's.

Done rambling... Nobody really knows expect those at Apple and even then... Time will tell. It's like putting together a puzzle and not know what it's supposed to look like. Just read into everything and try to make the best possible guess from the data gathered.

Assuming this has not be photoshopped, I would consider this a real picture. The volume buttons are popped out on the side of the phone so it is one of two things.

1. Someone put a custom cover on the back of an existing iPhone.
2. It is a new iPhone.

Makes sense

Fake, real... whatever. Let's talk about what a new iPhone might have. 3G. maybe 802.11n. Bluetooth 2.1. Hey, that's a LOT of antennas there! You might want two separated ones for the N alone. The current phone has a tiny plastic section for antennas. It makes sense to go to a full plastic back. And oh, let's fix that stupid recessed earphone jack. Maybe by putting a nice flat kind of thing all around the edge of the phone, like the picture seems to have...

Here is a very quick and dirty lightening of the photo in Aperture 2. It does appear to be legit as you can see reflections on the iPhone's back at the bottom as someone already stated.

Well, it looks a lot better on my mac screen than it does on here. I'm guessing that macrumors is automatically degrading the quality and size of the picture?

I do also wonder if it is a cover someone had made and placed on top of the current iPhone, as the person above stated.

Hmm. 8GB only?

Of course. What do you think its going to be?

8GB 399
16GB 499

They're not gonna stop making money off those models yet. They could sell for 2 more years.

Who knows, but that clearly is not black/white. Its glossy black with a marbelly stain inlay to the paint. The Apple is chrome just like on the current model. Very nice.

Um... you've seen the macbooks right -- they're a form of plastic? Also your point was it can't be metal due to reception, but then you state it can't be plastic. So what is it? There was something on here not along ago about Apple getting back into carbon fibre.

I don't recall carbon fiber, but zirconia ceramic back in 2006:

Anyone remember this patent? Having the case made of this substance would eliminate the need for a separate plastic antenna cover.

Apple seeks patent on radio-transparent zirconia CE casings

A cover wouldn't fit. Sides are too narrow/thin.

reflection

I'm assuming the manner in which the curving black reflection overlaps the Apple logo in a very sloppy Photoshopped fashion.

The reflection itself is odd - this thing ils lying on the keybopard of an MacBook - but seems to reflect the sidewall of an MacBook (don't know which, I have a MacBook Pro) with the ports... = barely possible if lying on top of the keyboard.

I'm pretty sure that this is fake. If you put your iPhone to Macbook Pro (same as in picture), you'll get the same dimension of an original iPhone, though, I highly doubt that Apple will leave the same dimensions on new iPhone.

Also is it me or does that phone seem smaller. Compared to the key's it's the size of a Moto Razor... Anyone else see this or is that the new MacBook Pro JUMBO.

Well, from the shape, it could be from the hair of the guy's head whose taking the picture.

Not sure if anyone noticed, but doesn't the camera look like its in an awkward place, like on the rounded corner.

That would support the theory that there's two new iPhones coming. One very cheap low end one that's smaller (and EDGE) and one higher end 3G phone with 0.4" bigger screen etc.

Two bridges in the WWDC publicity material? :)

If this is the case then a leak of this device to put people off the scent of the more expensive model would make some sense for Apple.

OR this is just a carefully 'shopped Colorware iPhone1.

What puzzles me about the picture is why they didnt take a shot of the front. Thats what we all wanna see (will there be a front camera, larger screen, etc.)

I also increased level a bit more. It's quite odd. It was taken in their house. Looks like they are tryin' to blur/cover something on the bottom. I'd say it's still real.

EDIT: I think I know why - it's a stolen device. They probably ripped the bottom security slot and wire off the iPhone. Problem SOLVED!

Well one thing is for sure, if this is real we should know in just a few days, probably sooner.

Whenever there are leaked pictures of upcoming products, Apple shuts it down fast. It happened with the 3rd gen nano through 9to5mac, and if Apple starts sending out take down orders, we will know weather or not this is real.

Not sure if anyone noticed, but doesn't the camera look like its in an awkward place, like on the rounded corner.

I did notice that, and it seems a bit odd, but as long as it is counter-bored flat, it won't not matter. Just like the current headphone jack

It looks neat but it goes against apple saying themselves that they prefer using aluminum since its a much better material than plastic for these kinds of gadgets.

I agree it does look un-apple'ish (word puzzling wow). Even the blackbooks look more "mac-like" than this. Its also very early for apple to show off models. Maybe its an inhouse prototype with plastic back for experimenting.

Like someone said, maybe they didn't have time, or they only took a picture of what had changed (so that would mean it's the same glass front, no extra camera, etc.).

I don't know if it's real or fake, but when you analyze every little detail, even the realest of real pictures have things that look "photoshopped".

Good question!

What puzzles me about the picture is why they didnt take a shot of the front. Thats what we all wanna see (will there be a front camera, larger screen, etc.)

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe there are no changes to the front.

Well, there's not that much left for changing on the front, huh?
A screen and a chromish casing.
Oh yeah, and a Home Button. :)

Maybe they should redesign the screen, though?

And hopefully the addition of a front camera for video calling on the 3G network.
