Let's not forget it's going to need HSPA to be at least good for next year too. That too is going to add some bulk to the project.

Quad Band, 3G and HSPA to be competitive into late 2008. Otherwise it's just another Also-Ran-Really-Cool-iPod like Phone.

Oh and why only one pic? Well your not to have a picture of it so I doubt it was in a photo quality environment. Also whenever it was taken it was in a small room with a control pad on the wall... And it was sunny that day. Look at the reflection closely. Bottom right, that looks like a security control pad to me... What's on the left though... Hallway?

PPS: Why is the Mac Mini still running a deceased CPU.....

Also, is it me or does the phone in that picture seem less flat "thinnovation" of the original and seems more curved or "bloated" on the back as in packed with gps (maybe), front camera for iChat video conferencing, 32GB capacity, 3G goodness?!

Once the flash memory producers release their 1st qtr/2nd qtr guidance we'll know the likely hood of 32gb in a phone. Cost wise it's NOT much however with volatility in the memory market manufactures usually like some room to play in case prices go up fast.

I had that issue, it started doing it all of a sudden.

Called Apple.
Scheduled a Genius Appointment
Gave me a new iPhone no questions asked.
Reception is great.

Or maybe it's because you live in hickville?

Or lives in the "dead zone" of the cell towers like I do with my T-Mobile in the heart of my city. I have no reception at home, but go outside and get a bar. Go down my street get two bars. Get in car and drive a mile outside my neighborhood and get 3 to 4 bars. Don't care whose your mobile carrier, somewhere, when you want it, you'll have no signal. Or like you said, if problem of reception is blatant EVERYEHERE, then follow the instructions previously given:

Called Apple.

I love how people call everything a photoshop. I think its real, and I don't think the apple logo is white, I think its chrome reflecting light.

Edit:I forgot to mention, that I would take this design over the current one any day, nice and sleek, and way more uniform than the current design.

i'm calling shenanigans here . . . just based off that the phone in the pic is 8 GB. any future phone will be 16 and 32, apple will shuffle off the 8 GB for the next iteration. just my $.02

Personally, I think it's real.

ColorWare iPhones cover the capacity information/serial number/iPhone logo on the back. Not to mention the seam. Not to mention the reflection of some guy taking the photo. Not to mention the Apple logo being silver (as in not white), not to mention the back having a different shape (more rounded than the current iPhone), not to mention the fact that on multiple occasions people have screamed "fake" like bloody murder when these often turn out to be real (square iPod nano? thin, MacBook-like keyboard?).

It's the new iPhone.

While I am not sure if this is real or not, I am skeptical of that hypothesis. Colorware phones do not have the FCC ID, Serial Number, etc still printed on them. One would have to take a shot of a normal iPhone and attempt to Photoshop the pic of the S/N, ID, etc and match the black on the COlorware job, not to mention remove the seam line and then move the text downware to the position the seam used to be. I'm no Photoshop pro but this seems like it would be a pretty damn difficuly job to do with Photoshop. :)

Actually it could be done quite easily in about 5 minutes. Not saying that it's fake but there is nothing on this picture that would be hard to do. You could in fact take the regular iPhone and create the entire picture in less than an hour if you know what you're doing. Change it black, add some reflections based on the way light would interact with the phone add the type using the Myriad font, skew it and then blur the whole picture to make it look like it was taken with a cheap camera. Looks like a neat phone but the whole thing is entirely possible to mock up in Photoshop.

I think the source of this picture is Apple Inc.

Why would they do this?
Well, it's quite easy.
They get publicity. The people get enthusiastic and want something new.
By the way, this picture does look damn real, doesn't it? Faking reflections on a glossy surface is a quite time consuming task and requires a heck of skills in Photoshop.

Spreading rumors is a giant part of Apple's marketing.
It's cheap and very effective.

The entire phone can't be metal or there would be no reception. The antenna can't get through it, that's why the bottom of the current iPhone is plastic while the rest is aluminum. That's the antenna.

So, if the iPhone had a seamless back, it would need to be plastic, or you would have a useless phone.

Aluminum is the new Apple design. It is also part of their "green" initiative because it is easily recyclable. All current Apple hardware is aluminum. This includes MacBooks, MacBook Pros, MacBook Airs, Mac Minis, Mac Pros, ACDs, iMacs, :apple:tvs, iPhones and iPods. They are not suddenly going to release a plastic iPhone.

Um... you've seen the macbooks right -- they're a form of plastic? Also your point was it can't be metal due to reception, but then you state it can't be plastic. So what is it? There was something on here not along ago about Apple getting back into carbon fibre.

I was just basing this on my own work I've previously done. Working with text that small and changing the color around it seems like a daunting task. The pic seems kinda grainy and this would need to be done pixel by pixel I'd suppose with some sort of blend/blur around the edges oif the text so that it did not stand out so much with a "pop".

All I'll say is if it IS a Photoshop job:
1. We're all effen talking about someones work.
2. I'd feel duped and as such, feel like a freakin' retard.
3. Kudos on this persons daunting work, you fooled a bunch of folks! :)

iPhone shape will remain same.. they wouldnt want to make it thicker its the perfect size right now.. so sleek... if anything they would like to go thinner even if its by a fraccccction.....

It sometimes depend on the technology you have inside... as in 3G is not the same as EDGE...

I agree with you. Noting the keypad, high ceiling with glass to the top, based on reflections one could presume this was taken inside a Cupertino office. Walls are plain white too with nothing on them (typical of the office).

But as a note. One could take a picture of a FLAT glossy black piece then bend it in GIMP in about 20mins. However to look like THIS, would take a little longer. Photoshop pro could probably wipe the floor with my skills but still doable. A lot of work but doable.

I actually work in 3D animation/graphic design and I'm a member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals and, though not a 5 minute job, this can be done if you know how. If it is Photoshop then it was done by somebody who knows what they're doing because none of us can tell for sure. If it isn't Photoshop then we've all just ruined Christmas by peeking at what Santa Jobs is bringing us this June.

Or May.

Apple Disinformation?

Many have brought up good points to how this picture may be faked, but I think the picture is real. It seems most likely that this is a mock up/prototype that was produced by apple, that is why there are the design changes (different volume button placement, different shape, different materials, the camera being placed on the curve, changed text, lack of FCC #'s, ect.). On the other hand I'm not so convinced we will ever see this exact phone ever ship. If apple was going to be shipping this exact design anytime soon apple legal would have pulled the photo a long time ago, as has been done in the past with leaked shots. Others are also right that the look doesn't exactly fit into apples current design scheme. Although it does look reminiscent to the iPod 3G , it seems to be the most forgotten version, but that does lead me to the conclusion that the overall look is possible from apple.

To top it all off this would fit right in with an apple's disinformation shenanigans. Apple could have easily leaked this photo on purpose knowing full well the amount of gossip it would generate, and keep us talking till they decide to release the real or final design they have planned. That may be why they haven't pulled the photo yet. If apple is indeed responsible for the leak it could be to continue to convolute all the other rumors that have been swirling about the 3G iPhone lately, the shortage of current iPhones, the rumors of the 3G version going into production/being bided on by manufactures, and every major US investment group adding to the mix their own theories.

I don't know exactly know what benefit this would all be to apple other than to keep us guessing, but I guess anything is possible with apple.

It's fake! I took the image to Photoshop and altered the levels to see how it looks in a lighter version. Well the lower part is looking very strange!

You can clearly see a person holding a camera.

And that's taken in a Bathroom. With the adjustment you can see what I thought was a security pad is actually a bathroom vent/light (I think).

So covert... More yes than No. But who uses their laptop on the pot?
