3rd Generation iPad Reviews: Retina Display "Stunning", LTE Speeds Impressive

it's somewhat ironic that tech writers are the ones who tend to be dismissive about these kinds of "incremental" updates. maybe it's b/c they're so focused on the specs and numbers that have surrounded computers for the last couple of decades.

nevermind that it's really really hard to get it that slim and the screen that beautiful while at the same time increasing the battery by 40%, putting in a new camera system, and all the while, keeping the price the same.

tech writers, for some reason, have no idea how hard it is to make something...maybe that's why they write and not make.

When it comes to the screen there will be some individuals who think it is by far the most important thing about the new iPad and will think it is a phenomenal upgrade b/c of it. There will also be others who really don’t care much about the screen/crisper graphics. Nobody is right and nobody is wrong. If somebody doesn’t care about the screen very much and doesn’t see value in the upgrade, clearly they shouldn’t get one. Likewise, people who don’t care much about the retina display shouldn’t assume that others don’t see a vast improvement and diminish the upgrade as pointless.

It is likely though that any US user who is in an area where LTE is prevalent will see this as a huge and welcome upgrade. Wifi only users shouldn’t likewise diminish that important step and just recognize it is unimportant to them (at least until they get an iPhone 5.

You are full of feces.

Come back and tell us this AFTER you see the screen in person.

From the NYT review. "Really, the new iPad should have been called the iPad 2S. In the past, Apple added the letter S to iPhone models that weren’t exactly new but had been tastefully enhanced (iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4S)."

Isn't it pretty much accepted that the S moniker stood for speed? The 3GS was very similar to the 3G but much faster and the same with the 4S. So there would be absolutely no reason to call this the iPad2S as it didn't significantly improve speed (unless you are counting cellular speed).

Hard to read much of the review past that...

Come back and tell us this AFTER you see the screen in person.

Don't misunderstand. I'm very excited about the screen, just saying that others won't care very much. Some people care about video quality and others don't. There were definitely people who didn't care much about the retina display in the iPhone 4. Many more people thought it awesome but to some the screen quality isn't very important in their decision process.

Enough with worrying about the NAME!

The iPad is going the way of the Mac computer line. MacBook, MacPro, iMac, iPad. I would think the iPhone will also drop the number identifier.

It's always the NEW MacBook, NEW iMac, NEW MacPro.
Now:
NEW iPad
NEW iPhone

Simpler.

NY times is probably still pissed Apple ignored them with the whole Mountain Lion preview. :p. of course USA Today has to do th obligatory comparison to the Kindle Fire, as if the two are even close to being the same class of product.
And a rumor gets repeated if it supports ones position. Who cares if a rumor has been completely disproven, repeat an incorrect statement often enough and enough people will believe it.
(John Gruber, who got one of these private ML previews from Phil Schiller, met David Pogue on his way out of the hotel suite. So much for the NYT not being invited.)

Should have been the ipad 2S??? What????

I hate people like this, expecting the product to be a "Jesus tablet" when we all know full well Apple would never do this, or any other company for that matter.

Some people will always be impossible to please...

It will be difficult when they sell multiple product lines at once. Currently they sell 3 iPhones. With computers they list the specs as the differentiation between the models.

iPhone (3G speeds, retina display, voice dictation)
iPhone (3G speeds, retina display, Siri)
iPhone (4G LTE, Siri, teardrop/4.0"/fill in the blank)

It won't be a big deal for people like us to differentiate but it may be for the average buyer.

To further elaborate

People want all the features in the world, the best features such as hours and hours of battery life, better screen , more storage, etc. They want the next ipad to be the end all tablet. But this isn't good business; why would Apple release such a tablet that would essentially stop you from buying further models into the future? Just doesn't make any sense to me. I just don't care for people calling this a minor upgrade, an Ipad 2S instead just because it looks the same as the ipad 2. What the hell do you want?

I'm feeling a little buyer's remorse right now ... I pre-ordered one for my daughter but maybe I should have ordered one for the wife as well :)

It seems like this is a good time for many people to obtain their first iPad. I can't think of any update in the next couple of years that might give me cause for genuine remorse about buying now ... except maybe a considerable price drop.

Not criticizing, curious: How can you have buyer's remorse on behalf of someone else (your wife) for a product you didn't buy? Buyer's remorse usually means regretting something you did buy and it usually would be held by the person who wanted the item.

Also as a more general question, I sometimes see people say on the forums that they're thinking of buying an Apple product for their wife or children, but they never include information about their wife or children wanting that product. And I am always curious whether it's sort of a thing where the person buys it for them and it's a "use this, you'll like it" type situation. Do people buy for others because they know best what others should use?

Actually, I do remember a recent conversation where a woman told me her husband bought her an iPad for Christmas and she didn't like it and got a Kindle Fire instead. And she said something about her Apple fanatical husband trying to force it on her. While I don't get preferring a Kindle Fire over an iPad, I also wasn't aware until recently that people might be buying big ticket items for spouses or children without knowing whether they want the product or not. In my family, big ticket items are always self-purchases, but beyond that even when buying gifts for birthdays or Christmas we check with each other if an item is more than say $70, as in, "I was thinking of getting you this, would you like that, or if not, what do you want?"

Not judging, just curious.

The display alone, ALONE, makes this worth it. Never mind everything else.

Retina is a phenomenal enhancement of the User Experience. It isn't just a spec.

A rare occasion in which I completely agree with you. I'm on vacation in America right now, I'm hoping to try and snag one Friday morning, it'll save me about £80 vs me buying it in the UK.

This retina display is the best thing since "Sliced HAM."

Please. A retina iPad will be the best thing since bacon :D

If you read the rest of the review, it's actually pretty decent. Pogue is usually pretty fair, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him on TV recommending the new iPad. That said, I agree that calling it the "2S" wouldn't do it justice. This is a bigger update compared to the iPad 2 than the iPhone 4S was to the iPhone 4.

That NYT statement about 2S is just...strange. But, the other reviews were pretty positive.

I'm SO glad I got the LTE version and can test out the speed that everyone's raving about, and the screen is going to be amazing according to the reviews. Can't wait to get my hands on it Friday!

I think it's hilarious how people don't realize that the new iPad is revolutionary.
1) The display is arguably by far the most important component of the device. As long as the innards can run it well, everything else is ultra-secondary.
2) The display of the iPad 1/2 was significantly lacking. The resolution was very poor. Too poor to comfortably read and fully resolve the high resolution images and movies people typically consume on the device.
The new display technology is unheard of. Nobody has done it before. This iPad is the most revolutionary one so far IMHO, and given the importance of the display I highly doubt that there will ever be a more revolutionary iPad. I would have never bought any of the previous ones due to the low-resolution displays (had one for two weeks and couldn't bear it), but this one I'm pretty sure I'll keep for half a decade.

Just my 2 cents. The person who wrote the NYT review is a moron.

Nytimes was more sensible

Basically their review reflects post honeymoon; not as exciting.

Well either way looking fwd to my iPad 3rd gen!

Can't wait for LTE in the new iPhone.

So ridiculous that the 4s didn't get it, though I guess Apple is stuck waiting on the new chip w/ better battery life.
