I think it's hilarious how people don't realize that the new iPad is revolutionary.
1) The display is arguably by far the most important component of the device. As long as the innards can run it well, everything else is ultra-secondary.
2) The display of the iPad 1/2 was significantly lacking. The resolution was very poor. Too poor to comfortably read and fully resolve the high resolution images and movies people typically consume on the device.
The new display technology is unheard of. Nobody has done it before. This iPad is the most revolutionary one so far IMHO, and given the importance of the display I highly doubt that there will ever be a more revolutionary iPad. I would have never bought any of the previous ones due to the low-resolution displays (had one for two weeks and couldn't bear it), but this one I'm pretty sure I'll keep for half a decade.

Just my 2 cents. The person who wrote the NYT review is a moron.

Just curious, which part of the Times review bothered you?

I love how the reviews exhuberence is inverse to their technical comprehension.

While I'd love a tablet that did 24 hours sans charge, I'm looking forward to getting this.

I'm at SDF at UPS with Gary Allan "Watching Airplanes" on continuos repeat, singing to my iPad.

As an iPad 2 owner trying to fight off the temptation, this was funny and sad at the same time:

If you have an iPad 2, it’s a tougher call since it still seems nearly as fast as the new iPad. But if you choose not to upgrade (or to spend $399 for the 16 GB iPad 2 now), again, treat the new iPad as if it were Medusa when you’re in an Apple Store. Do. Not. Look. At. It.

NY Times

- "Really, the new iPad should have been called the iPad 2S."
- "Apple just took its white-hot iPad and added the latest screen, battery and cellular technologies."

...and by doing so, Apple has made the best tablet even better. Why is this a problem?

If all Apple does it continue to improve on a product this is good, right?

keep it coming.

i said it earlier, let me say it again, they should have improved the front facing camera not the back facing camera.

Battery life looks good, i will wait for anandtech review for more technical/nerd review :D
Why update the front facing? It's only practical application is for FaceTime and that's sent compressed over the internet anyway.

Ungratefulmuch?

Some of the reviewers complaining about it being a 2S - Shut the **** up!

The iPad IS the screen, always has been, that is how you interact with it. The increase in other specs, such as the camera, 4G, etc, are all awesome. Sure extra improvements could have included a front facing HD cam too and if it was as thin as a piece of paper...but C'MON!

Unless ofcourse some of those reviewers are just trying to make their (and my) life easier on Friday lining up however...

Hmm, I usually enjoy David Pogue's reviews since he's really funny and to the point. This time though, he's overly critical of the most simplest of things. I mean, what does it matter what it's called? Apple probably just wanted to make the naming convention easier. The different models of iPods were officially called iPod Nano, iPod mini etc.

The rest of the reviews are brilliant though. Everyone seems genuinely impressed by the display. A 9.3 score on the Verge is impressive. I bet the other tablet makers must be shocked. There is absolutely nothing right now on the market that beats the iPad. Although I do hope there will be. Competition is good.

These reviews have pretty much changed my mind...I wasn't going to get it at first because I have an iPad 2 but these reviews have me foaming at the mouth. I really don't want to spend the money...but I gotta do it. I really want the 32Gb Verizon LTE one...hopefully my Target will have one. Gonna try my luck Friday I guess!

Interesting. It could just be for maintenance, or perhaps they are gearing up for a flood of online orders on Friday.
I wonder if they have to shut it down to update so many remaining orders to 'shipped' status for Thursday.

I also wonder if a future ipad with a combination of haptic feedback and 3d interface would function as an interactive holographic display. How would be nice to feel the click of buttonpushes, raised keys on the screen.

"once you see and use the new iPad, there's no going back"...

So when my friend gets his new iPad Friday and I use it, I won't be able to use my iPad 2 anymore? ****.

Yup, that's exactly right. The iPad 3 has built-in facial recognition technology, and once it finds out you've seen one, kill switch baby. Your iPad 2 is history.

So what's it gonna be, pilgrim? Your friend, or your iPad?

I'm so confused by all the "its basically an iPad 2!" remarks. If not a retina display, what could they possibly have added to make this a proper upgrade? I can't think of anything as significant.

Iphone > 3g: 3g and more speed
3g > 3gs: We got a camera, voice commands, and more speed.
3gs > 4: Retina Display, Facetime Cam, Upgraded Camera, and more speed.
4 > 4s: Siri, Upgraded Camera, and more speed
iPad > iPad 2: Front and back cams, thinner, and more speed
iPad 2 > new iPad - Retina Display, LTE, upgraded camera, dictation, and more speed

To me, this seems to be one of the most significant idevice upgrades so far. I guess not launching alongside a brand new iOS version makes the iPad upgrades feel like less of an upgrade.

Its still going to suck in the sun light and still going to be a finger print magnet. The display will be awesome until you try and read a book outside or on a train.
