Apple Store down

Interesting, could be maintenance. Just checked Fed Ex website for tracking and it is at the facility in Nashville, TN. Probably will leave tomorrow on its way up here to Wisconsin :)

I look forward to see if Apple (or some sleazy local retailer) is going to advertise this iPad as 4G in Europe since our frequencies are different than those used in the USA or Canada...

Australian Apple is advertising it as:

Built with the latest in wireless technology, the new iPad lets you connect to fast data networks around the world — up to 4G LTE.2
World ready. And very well connected.
You use your iPad a lot, so you want it with you wherever you go. The new iPad offers the most comprehensive support for networks around the world. It’s designed with cellular antennas that access a larger frequency spectrum. That means you can get online almost anywhere you are — whether you’re on AT&T or Verizon. You can even pop in a local SIM card to get a connection when you’re traveling. Learn more about iPad with Wi-Fi + 4G

Really really fast is your only option.
The new iPad supports fast cellular networks the world over — including 4G LTE networks in the U.S. and Canada.2 So you can browse the web, stream content, or download a movie at blazing-fast speeds. It also works on GSM/UMTS worldwide network technologies including HSPA, HSPA+, and DC-HSDPA — the fastest 3G networks out there. You’ll see downlink speeds up to 42 Mbps with DC-HSDPA and up to 21.1 Mbps with HSPA+.3

Not quite a lie, but damn close.

I wish I knew why Apple went with the least flexible networks.

Mine has shipped but the UPS tracking code isn't working still

Did you order it from Apple? It should be coming from FedEx not UPS.

In any case, assuming you ordered it right after the announcement and was told you would get it this Friday, there probably isn't much to see yet on tracking. Currently mine (like probably every one else) shows that their package has been "Picked Up" and "Shipment information sent to FedEx". That is what mine said on the 11th and still does. It looks like they aren't "in transit" yet. Mine is being sent "Standard Overnight - Indirect" so we will probably see them "in transit" later today. Mine is coming from Middletown, PA to here in Columbus, OH which is around a 7 hour drive (not sure if they are sent via truck or plane).

Estimated delivery for mine says Mar 16, 2012 by 3:00 PM ET.

I was hoping I would get the new Apple TV at around the same time, but that hasn't shipped yet and it says 1 to 2 weeks. Might be faster to go to my local Apple store and get one Friday. I can't imagine they will be in demand nearly as much as the new iPad.

Apple knows how to bring it! I already own an iPad, but after watching those reviews I cannot wait to get my hands on the new iPad.

"iPad 2S"

I'm so confused by all the "its basically an iPad 2!" remarks. If not a retina display, what could they possibly have added to make this a proper upgrade? I can't think of anything as significant.

Iphone > 3g: 3g and more speed
3g > 3gs: We got a camera, voice commands, and more speed.
3gs > 4: Retina Display, Facetime Cam, Upgraded Camera, and more speed.
4 > 4s: Siri, Upgraded Camera, and more speed
iPad > iPad 2: Front and back cams, thinner, and more speed
iPad 2 > new iPad - Retina Display, LTE, upgraded camera, dictation, and more speed

To me, this seems to be one of the most significant idevice upgrades so far. I guess not launching alongside a brand new iOS version makes the iPad upgrades feel like less of an upgrade.

Well it's not an "A6" processor (A5X is not an upgrade to the actual CPU, just the video card), lacks Siri (arguably one of the biggest selling points of the incremental iPhone 4S), and has the exact same casing/shell as the iPad 2.

It's not quite certain if it actually has "more speed" in a practical sense, because of the minor CPU upgrade. Would've been nice if they built a new casing for it, or at least offered it in a gunmetal color, to help distinguish it from the iPad 2.

Granted, I'm sure Apple will slowly roll out Siri to the new iPads in a future iOS update, once they see iPad excitement from the general public slowing down a little bit.

Not complaining too much (I pre-ordered mine), just saying... If it at least had the true A6 and a redesigned casing, I guarantee no one would be calling it the "iPad 2S."

Only about 15 hours away from receiving my iPad here in Australia!!

The reviews have been consistently good to great, I have no doubt the new iPad will slaughter past iPad sales.

it's always funny to see reviewers zooming into text or high-resolution photos and telling that the extreme high detail is due to retina display. seems like it's really hard to understand the difference between virtual and real world pixels.

I really want this new iPad to be my first tablet. If only I had a few hundred dollars I could toss around!

  • Of course some people would be calling it the "iPad 2S".
  • Some people still say the iPad is "just a big iPod Touch".
  • Some people are still making feminine hygiene jokes.
  • Some people are saying that Apple should have put a retina display and an A6 processor and LTE and Siri into the first iPad, and sold it for $150 and that the only reason they didn't is that they were holding back these very basic features (which Android has had on its tablets since 1948) so they could get the iSheep to buy a new iPad every year.
  • Some people are saying that Apple will quickly go out of business as soon as the first Windows 8 tablet appears.
  • Some people are still asking "does it do Flash?", or "will it play Crysis?"

As have almost everyone else's. Not sure what anyone would expect since they are not to be delivered until Friday. They could have been on the moon and still would be here Friday.

No, I get that but don't have to agree with or like it.

Apple is about showmanship and I'm sure they don't want to hear people bitch when they don't get theirs sooner but I have the right to roll my eyes, dammit.

;)

On a side note, my ATV3 has shipped and should be here today, Thursday, a whole day early.

What in the world did Apple do to piss off the NYT?

First they go balls to the wall with the Foxconn thing. Now their review guy writes up a BS review.

Can you say "agenda"?

Who's the reviewer for the times? Sounds like a real crab.

Pogue is a leftover from the old days before the internet, he now seems quite out of place. But now that I think of it maybe the NY Times is also a relic from before the internet. A perfect fit.

BTW Pogue is a dyed in wool lover of all things Apple. ALWAYS has, as in, before you young ones were born. He is one of us but is attacking on very unimportant things so as to retain some 'cred' with the rest of his NYTimes buddies. I doubt they are fooled but are going along with it because he can get them cool Apple goodies two weeks before everyone else.

...and by doing so, Apple has made the best tablet even better. Why is this a problem?

If all Apple does it continue to improve on a product this is good, right?

I hear ya on that. It's as if the reviewers didn't stop to think "well... what would be needed to make me 100% satisfied about this thing?"

It's a big glass tablet, with the latest and greatest hardware and far superior to anything a competitor offers. How are they not 100% satisfied?

Everyone keeps bitching about wanting an iPad killer and no one can produce one. And then Apple steps it up and produces and even BETTER iPad. They are killllllllllling it right now. Simply killing it.

No way is any of that on the level of a retina display -- not even close. For those who are getting ATT/Verizon models, neither does any of that compare to LTE.

Does anyone really care that it has an a6 or an a5x? The CPU may have not been upgraded, but it still has twice the ram and a substainially upgraded graphics processor. It is def faster, we just haven't seen any applications to showcase what it can do.

Siri is still in beta, and while she got a lot of hype at release, she hasn't left much of a lasting impression. Personally, I'm not using her at all, and looking at some of the Siri threads around here I'm certainly not the only one.

And a redesigned case? To what benefit? You don't need a gunmetal case when people are going to be looking at a screen that makes their 60" HDTV **** itself.

Please. A retina iPad will be the best thing since bacon :D
I won't argue that the retina display will be better than bacon, but my "Sliced HAM" comment was a reference to the Commodore Amiga graphics mode from the 1980s known as "Sliced Hold-and-Modify", where each line of the image could have its own 16 color palette (out of a full 4096-color palette), plus the ability to modify the R, G, or B component of any pixel while holding the other two RGB components the same as the pixel to its left.

This was when microprocessors had speeds in MHz and computers had RAM in kilobytes.

I thought of Sliced HAM, because the river rocks image in the picture at the top of this article reminded me of the NewTek image of rocks that was used to demo their method of dynamic HAM.

The 4S was hardly incremental. It's pretty amazing they've been able to pack such a high resolution into a small display while maintaining great battery life and good performance, the iPad 3 is hardly a "2S".
