i think that the 5.5 jumbo iPhone 8 with LCD in 2017 will be a niche product.... only 10/15% of sales...

the OLED model will maximize the screen to body ratio...

so why apple will keep the 5.5 iPhone 8 with LCD?
in my opinion for 2 reasons:

1- the OLED will be smaller (5.1 or 5.2) , so maybe someone still wants the 5.5 mega phablet size
2- the OLED model will be much pricier

i am sure that iPhone 7 will look soon outdated and "old".. and as someone said only a filler...

i think apple is not pushing all way down to iPhone 7 plus this year because next year apple needs people to upgrade to the OLED model

Yeah, different feature sets and options is NOT fragmentation. You're misusing that word.

Yeah, they updated the article.
Before it said that 5.5 inch model was not known to feature wireless charging as well.

I'll update my comment as well though.

So basically the 2017 Plus will be another S while the smaller 2017 will be a full upgrade?

An interesting tactic... I'm not sure how my wife and I will handle it. She likes being on the same cycle as me, but she has a 4.7" while I have a 5.5".

No where in the article did it say that lol. Why are people automatically assuming the Plus won't have this next year? IT has always been the Plus receiving more then the smaller 4.7 iPhone. Highly doubt that would change, doesn't even make much sense financially and logically to neglect the more popular Plus models anyway.

Wireless charging will, if the reports are correct, become the next wifi-like benefit that public spaces (like airports), retailers and coffee shops can offer to customers. Imagine the benefit of going into Starbucks for a cup of joe, browsing the web and getting a quick charge doing nothing more than hitting accept on-screen as we do now for wifi. No longer needing to carry cables with you, or look for wall outlets to charge.

And once the charging tech is applied to laptops, workspaces can be created out of raw open areas, not requiring wiring be laid for desks / offices, since data and power can both be fed wirelessly. It's a huge change, if it can be accomplished.
Star bucks already has a version of that with their charging keys.

What I used to love about Apple was the simplicity of their product lineup. There were very few "models" of a product and differences were minor, such as storage space. This was especially true of the iPhone. Now, Apple is become Microsoft lite with too may variations. Is my iPhone LED, OLED, wirelessly charged, dual camera...? Tech geeks love to parse all these specs, but the average person's eyes glaze over when looking at the options.

The lack of clarity for their product line mimics the lack of focus in general. I wish they would have spent 1/10th of their time and money perfecting IOS and MacOS (or build a world class professional laptop) instead of chasing the elusive Apple car...

I'm out. My Apple hype is done for. While I do believe that an all-glass phone does make sense. I'm just too frustrated with Apple right now to care anymore.

Good luck, I'm sure it will be nice. Let's just wait what they continue to do wrong in software development (GUI??? Stability anyone?), in lack of pros (there used to be a Mac Pro) and customer support (amazon is way better now, than Apple is, Apple has become frustrating with its computerized standard replies that do not make sense and with customer support that does not even comprehend what I'm saying and that is not for lack of language capabilities but of technical and customer-oriented understanding.)

Again: good luck.

I've been slowly getting out for a couple years now. Just need to sell my 2008 Mac Pro and 2012 MacBook Pro. Never owned an iPhone cuz I got burned by owning an iPod (non-removable battery ended up lasting me only 20 minutes per charge after only 10 months of use). Looks like the last Apple products I will own will be the full sized chiclet keyboard and an Airport Extreme.

Well, I like the idea of the smaller model getting a high-end feature that the other model doesn't have, making them more like equals rather than the bigger screen being treated as the superior device, but wouldn't it be nicer for users if they could just choose the screen size that suits them, without having to compromise on features?

Hopefully this will be long range wireless charging and not need a puck or dock.
Don't worry you're gonna get the puck charger if you buy it separately. True wireless charging still way too far from reality for consumers. :D

You're really being tough on Apple, basing your experience with an iPod, which was a product that very quickly changed and improved as technologies changed, for a reason not to buy an iPhone. Really, the same thing has happened with every company's smart phones, MP3 players, computers, televisions, cars, washing machines, etc.

Induction Wireless Charging now thats a new thing? And would explain why everybody is overreacting, right? Oh. It's not? Well what's all the fuss? Oh. Glass case. Now that's definitely new surely? Ok. OLED screens on mobiles a first? Yeah. It's the OLED screen. Surely!
huh?

I 100% support this. I have no idea what I am going to change to, but I know I need to make a switch. So many things that made Apple what it was are gone. New MacBooks are an example of this, also in my opinion iOS and MacOS have become a little bloated and less efficient then they were. Don't even get me started on iTunes and Apple Music and how angry it makes me.

I've just upgraded to iPhone 7. This is because I learnt the hard way with "waiting for the next version" with the MacBook Pro. Was going to get it in 2015 and thought I'd wait cause of all the amazing features that were rumoured then BAM! Apple released them, readjusted the FX to put them way out my price range and also kicked me in the balls but re-pricing the 2015's up! In other news I'm loving the 7

I wonder if AirPorts dead because they want to use the AirPort name for the wireless charging station*

*sold separately for just $99

It isn't a reach at all. There have been multiple examples showing far greater distances than what's possible with current tech, including one that was capable of powering an entire room, from a single transmitter, using a bunch of repeaters. There will never be a wireless technology that isn't distance-dependent (unless we're someday able to leverage quantum entanglement, somehow...), so that argument is somewhat pointless. It delivers enough charge to power many devices, at reasonable distances. For a version 1.0 technology, I'd call it pretty good. I'm sure it can be improved upon in the future.
Pointless would be arguing a supporting fact (distance dependence) while ignoring the context of the entire post. I never said the tech wasn't good. In fact I said it was exciting. I'm looking forward to what it might mean in future iterations. I suggested pumping the brakes on the hyperbole like far superior on the current consumer offerings; of which there are none. Regarding those multiple examples of distance charging... could you link one or two? Please don't use the Energous one though since it's less a demonstration and more of an ad.

I hated a lot about the iPods which also crossed over to the iPhone. I'll most likely never own an iPhone, I absolutely hate all of it's limitations.
