I was hoping the 8/+ would have the same bezel less screen but LCD with a fingerprint sensor on the back not the same old design.

I for one will be willing to pay the extra to get the X at least it looks like a phone from 2017 not 2014

There's clearly a power struggling going on at Apple. Some good ideas floating around but some really poor leadership & execution. iPhone 8 and iPhone X with a really weird screen. I'm sure some of you think the X is beautiful but I don't think so and the name is really bad.

If you look at it from a money perspective they are doing a great job at Apple as the stock is still going up. I think we are seeing an issue that would have occurred regardless if Steve was around. These phones will continue to get harder and harder to develop for Apple. We will probably end up seeing an occurring pattern of longer wait times for redesigns. Samsung will continue to eat up market share as Android gets more mature though which is ok by me as Apple needs competition and will have no shortage of cash. I have an S8 and I still don't find Android to be as slick and reliable as iOS though the phone itself is very nice.

And it is impossible to discern between the 400PPI and the 500-600 PPI of Android devices. Heck, Samsung actually runs their phones at lower resolutions most of the time to save battery life. I had a S6 Edge (1440P) and I didn't notice a difference going to a 6S Plus. The resolution wars are a joke, all they do is destroy battery life.
Plus resolution above 1080p which is more than enough on a tiny screen is silly. It eats battery and processor resources. The 8 plus and 8 will have higher geekbench scores than the X easily. The x will also have one less hour than the 8 plus per the Apple specs. It’ll be even more using it in real world.

My friend has a S8+ and to me the screen looks a lot nicer than my 6+, it looks crisper and a lot more pop too. How much that is due to the Amoled over the LCD I am not sure but there's no doubt the screen looks amazing whereas my iPhone screen looks a bit average in comparison (That been said the screen on my iPhone does it's job perfectly well, just without the pizzaz of the high resolution Amoleds)

Well... apple is doing same auto now
10 yrs same model
every yrs small change ...
so no hope in the next 5 yrs ... iphone still frog camera and round shape ,

apple only redesign only when no one else buying their phone :)

My Oneplus 5 has a 1080p AMOLED panel and it's plenty good enough for me I would rather have a 1080p AMOLED panel with better battery than a QHD panel with so so or poor battery life.

I don't mind at all. Why? Because the iPhone 6/6S/7/8 is the greatest, easiest-to-use, most beautiful iPhone design of all time. Bar none. They can keep it around as long as they want, IMO.

What will you do when all future iPhones share the same design as the X? or does it not bother you?

Why ruin a great product?

I agree! Where can Apple go from here design wise? The X is the next step but as far as the lower end models there is nothing better. The iPhone has improved since the 6, which I have had now for almost 3 years. Due to iOS coming out and getting close to the 64gb limit. it's time to upgrade. The 8 will probably be the last phone I purchase for another 5 years.

I’m not disputing it isn’t better looking but I’ve never looked at my 1080p screen on my 7 plus and complained about how bad it is and how deprived Iam. I’d rather have the faster processor and longer battery.

screen resolution on the iphone 8 is a joke to be honest in 2017 1334 x 750

The S8 Plus is about 355PPI when it runs at it's standard ~1080P, so not sure what the real joke is. Advertising a resolution that is lowered by default vs. one that works all the time?

I haven't seen anyone mention the fact that all carriers (in the U.S.) are limiting video streaming now to 720p and 480p. Maybe T-Mobile is keeping 1080p I am not sure. What good is a high res cell phone screen if you are capped at 720p? Sure a video may look a tad crisper, I personally wouldn't notice a difference since the screens are so small. I've tried Samsungs and the last Pixel, AMOLED is very nice but I didn't notice any benefit of higher resolution compared to my iPhone. I do not and never will game on my cell phone, that is the only conceivable benefit of high resolution on a phone that I can think of.

iPhone 8 or X is not a failure, because people can't or won't stop talking about it. It generates web traffic, clicks and money.

Note 7 would catch on fire but people still loved it.

The S8 plus uses 1080p as a compromise between performance and battery life the default res is of course QHD and I agree with Cocount_One a slightly higher than 720p resolution in 2017 belongs to budget android phones not on any 2017 iPhones.

Let me know when it actually matters, as in when you can see a difference that isn't due to AMOLED's over saturated colors. This will most likely be the last year of the lower resolution iPhone, and no one is forcing anyone to buy it. If you are so concerned with high resolutions/high PPI then get the iPhone X.

1080p AMOLED is what I always aim for as honestly I cannot see the difference with my eyesight and would take better battery life over QHD any day however I would never pay for a iPhone 8 as the screen resolution is too low for the price you are paying.

The name is so bad because everyone is calling it the iPhone ex. The x is the Roman numeral for ten, which is how it's pronounced. When said correctly, it's the same as every other iPhone name.

Exactly the name is so bad.

There's wasn't an iPhone V or an iPhone II, there was 2, 3, 4, .. 7, 8 and now ten? Okay. What happened to 9? If you're skipping nine and going straight to roman numerals, that's cool - maybe present it that way. If half the world is pronouncing it "ex" maybe you should have taken that huge marketing budget and figured that's what was going to happen before committing to that. Poorly executed - not sure why anyone would disagree with that.

So it's apples problem that people can't understand a simple Roman numeral, even after its been stated as such?

if this doesn't count as a new design, then every iphone since the first has had the same design.

but what people really are talking about, is that the phone didn't get a bigger screen / new formfactor
Exactly, where are the complaints about the 4/4S/5/5S/SE, that is a design used for 6 years going by their logic. The truth is the 7 had a different design and so does the 8. But that doesn’t mean it is drastically different. Either way, it should have been called 7S.

I am not sure what you are looking for here. Maybe they make the phone square shaped? I think it's a great evolution of the iPhone and certainly won't be mistaken for anything else. If you prefer the S8, then I am pretty sure they sell them. I don't know why anyone would go create a forum post over this.

There is where you lost your credibility to be a non troll Apple forum user :)
good luck with your new textured plastic cover every 3 months from Samsung.
Your comment is pretty baseless... he is entitled to his opinion. I've been a user here a looong time and have been on both sides of the divide. I still prefer Samsung but the iPhone X is compelling. I hope you're not defending the 4-year-old iPhone 8 design.

Wow Apple has lost it. They call a 4 year old design the iPhone 8 when it should've been the 7s.

What a bad naming scheme. And so confusing.

Don't get why 'X'. The 'X' in tech is so overused in past decades I was happy to see when Apple abandoned it in macOS and now they bring it back to the iPhone.

Still think the Galaxy S8 looks better than the 'X's rubber boat bezel look that seems like there's a case around it.

iPhone 6 was released on September 19, 2014.

The iPhone8 will be released on September 22, 2017.

2017 - 2014 = 3 years

There's the iPhone X, which is a new design. I prefer its design over Samsung's offerings.
