Good Point! The phone is also heavier and thicker than the 7.

Here is what I see happening:

2017: iphone 8 and 10(X)
2018: Iphone 9 no Plus(with Face ID/Touch ID) and Iphone 10S and 10S+ (With FACE ID/Touch ID/Apple in house OLED)
2019: Apple Phone, this will end the iPhone and number series.

Tim Cook spent like 15 minutes explaining how fingerprints are inferior to to facial recognition. 50,000:1 vs. 1,000,000:1 false positives.

Touch ID isn't coming back on a new phone.

Why would Apple launch an iPhone 9 when they've already launched an X?

The iPhone numbering will always continue to remind consumers they have a phone in need of upgrading next year. Removing numbers removes that reminder.

I think the iPhone 8 is a waste. Should've just released the iPhone X as the flagship and made it more affordable. If Apple wants to make this technology mainstream they need to make it affordable for the masses.

They should've brought back the headphone jack...

It will come back. Again there is a reason they were researching how get it integrated into the screen. Iphone 8 sales vs X will probably dictate what happens.

Somehow I don't think iPhone 15 sounds appealing. X will be the last IMO.

What is infuriating is that they create yet another price tier in the iPhone X whereas the iPhone 8 should have been the iPhone X! The iPhone 7/8 are already premium phones with premium prices but with dated designs. Apple is being a sneaky POS like it has always been. I hope the X fails but it will probably break sales records like the MBP 2016.

In a few years from now, there is nothing stopping Apple from introducing yet another price tier - iPhone X Pro - comes with a bendable screen! Yet again, that will break all records! There is nothing that will stop the pigs at Apple from getting fatter.... ;-)
The 8 exists because there’s no way Apple could make enough X to meet demand if X was the only new phone.

Yeah and everyone would me waiting months to get a phone because Apple’s supply can’t keep up with demand.

I was hoping the 8/+ would have the same bezel less screen but LCD with a fingerprint sensor on the back not the same old design.

I for one will be willing to pay the extra to get the X at least it looks like a phone from 2017 not 2014

If the 8nhad a bezel-free screen what would be the point of the X. If Apple could have made the X in the quantities needed to meet demand the 8 wouldn’t exist.

Apple tried in-display fingerprint and failed. Apple knows when to give up.

They decided to put the all the resources into making Face ID better. Executives choose one path and don't split resources trying to make both work. Otherwise, you end up with mediocre results in both.
  • Headphone jack or Bluetooth
  • Home button or Gestures
  • LCD or OLED
It's pretty clear where Apple is heading.

I’m still on a 6 Plus that I got in 2014 and I will probably get the 8 over the X. I’m a little bummed I’ll get a phone that looks the same, but on the other hand think of all the goodies I’ve been missing out on for the past 3 years. 3D touch, taptic engine, waterproofing, a good chip (A8 was horribly underpowered), 4k/hvec video shooting, 2nd gen TouchID, and now with the new phones 1080p slomo, wireless charging and ARkit. It’s going to be a whole new experience for me.

BUT IT’S THE SAME DESIGN!....aside from everything you’ve just list

I don't think it would've been a problem if they focused on 1 new phone instead of 3...
Also we all had to wait longer for the iPhone 4s, and no one died over that. If we had to wait an extra 5-6 months for it to be more affordable I would've been happy with that.

So he will bring home best designer award 2017 again ?????

I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't mind the bezels. I don't need an edge to edge screen, I'm not fussed. I don't care if it looks 'dated'. So what. Also don't watch movies on my iPhone (got an iPad for that).

Meh, if we all liked the same the world would be a boring place.

Maybe it's just me but I am glad they released a new iPhone with Touch ID. I don't know how I feel about the whole Face ID. I'm on the fence with that new tech.

I've never loved the 6/6s/7/8 form factor because it's too slippery, but I certainly don't care that it's a few years old. If it were a better design (easier to hold), they could keep it forever, as far as I care.

This guy and his entire team have been resting on their laurels for quite some time now, so I sure hope not. In general though, Apple's been a complete dud on the design and simplicity front for years now.

Wow Apple has lost it. They call a 4 year old design the iPhone 8 when it should've been the 7s.

What a bad naming scheme. And so confusing.

Don't get why 'X'. The 'X' in tech is so overused in past decades I was happy to see when Apple abandoned it in macOS and now they bring it back to the iPhone.

Still think the Galaxy S8 looks better than the 'X's rubber boat bezel look that seems like there's a case around it.
Option 1 - Stop focusing on what the iPhone is called, and focus on whether or not it meets your needs / wants
Option 2 - If you don't like the new phones, get something else. That way, you don't have to complain about something as meaningless as the name of the iPhone, which you don't like because of the bezels.

When you take the emotional hyperbole out of your post and replace it with logic and common sense, there is nothing meaningful left in your post.

There's clearly a power struggling going on at Apple. Some good ideas floating around but some really poor leadership & execution. iPhone 8 and iPhone X with a really weird screen. I'm sure some of you think the X is beautiful but I don't think so

Well, if YOU don't think so - that settles everything.

Yeah forget using your normal headphones too alot of iphone 7 owners have had to suffer that one

if this doesn't count as a new design, then every iphone since the first has had the same design.

but what people really are talking about, is that the phone didn't get a bigger screen / new formfactor

Cmon man it's obvious that it's the same shape and size since 2014. Yes they've changed things on the inside but the outside has stayed the same except for materials used and some slight design elements.

The iPhone design has always been evolutionary rather than revolutionary. They used be on a two year cycle but with the iphone 6 they've stretched it out to a 4 year cycle.

I just wonder if this is a sign of things to come.

That's why new technology needs an adaptation phase. It's not something that everybody accepts right away. Because they do not have the necessary experience to fully understand everything. But over time, some gravitate towards change.

Honestly, what more can Apple do to a curved rectangle?

I think the 8 is beautiful. The 6 and 6S never felt finished. They seemed like prototypes that got pushed through. The 7 felt refined and finished and the 8 is the polished formed of that.

And it is impossible to discern between the 400PPI and the 500-600 PPI of Android devices. Heck, Samsung actually runs their phones at lower resolutions most of the time to save battery life. I had a S6 Edge (1440P) and I didn't notice a difference going to a 6S Plus. The resolution wars are a joke, all they do is destroy battery life.
AND - more pixels = more power requirements = battery life hit.

As a company I believe there's a lot Apple can do with a curved rectangle given that they consider themselves a company that focuses on design..... I do agree with some of what you said but to me it shouldn't have taken 3 tries to get it polished... I don't hate the design of the 8 at all but I wish they would've trimmed a few millimeters off of the bezels on the 8 and I believe it would've felt a little more like they weren't reusing the same design.
