Gotta find something to raise the price, the series 4 will be a premium product while the "old" series 3 will be the cheaper alternative (same price as today, but less expensive than the new model).

I’m semi interested in buying but only because os5 holds out the possibility of a properly functional music app as opposed to the crippled version that os4 seems likely to be frozen with. I’m not interested in any of the gimmicks surrounding the watch. I simply want a fully functional music app to control and access the contents of my phone. Exactly like I had prior to the wretched os4.

Would like to see the same comparison for the 38mm model.
I'm wearing a 42 but the new 38 is tempting, I'd be able to have a bigger display in a smaller form factor. The 42mm is ok, but I think the 38 looks better unless you have a very big arm. Band compatibility isn't really an issue, mine are just cheap bands bought on amazon, they costed me less than the 30EUR difference between the 38 and the 42 models.

Anyone used an Apple Watch over the long term for serious running and cycling? I’ve been using Garmin for years but the bugs do annoy me. Also anyone heard the rumours of a watch from Wahoo? Think it’s called the ‘Wahoo Rival’.
What is serious running or cycling? I'm not sure about the battery of watch for 4-5 hour rides with the gps on..
I know it can sync to places like training peaks but the sync does not work the other way around. What i mean is that currently it will not support structured workouts built inside of training peaks.

The other problem might be sensors. Past versions had a support for 2 simultaneous bluetooth devices. So headphones and phone and you're out.. what about power sensors, speed, cadence, real HRV strap etc..
If the new version will support more of these i might jump in :)

Time to neatly pack my :apple: watch Series 0 and upgrade to Series 4.

And since my Series 0 is in good nick, hoping it has the same effect the first iPhone has now. Worth a few £££ in a few years time :D:D

They said that about the iPhone X and multiple sources claimed "severe" supply constraints. All of them were wrong

Totally two different products you’re comparing here. The iPhone has _multiple_ suppliers, where as the Apple Watch has one primary supplier, not to mention the Apple Watch is an accessory, where the iPhone is far more predominant over the Apple Watch. I would expect Apples suppliers to be more in line with the iPhone then they would the Apple Watch.

lol... I would like to see the watch go "Retina'.. it probably will at one stage in its life.. like everything... even the up-coming MBA may....

The :apple:watch is a late start.
for what reason do you want a super sharp display. the watch now is already really sharp. you dont hold this thing 2 inches from your face. such a small screen won't make any difference...

They should drop the "series" nonsense. It sounds pretentious and forced. Just call it Apple Watch 4.

But, that’s boring just labeling it ‘Apple Watch 4’ and lifeless. Also, not sure how you derived ‘Series’ being pretentious. The term ‘Series’ is a marketing moniker behind the Apple Watch and showing some distinction with the newer models. I think it works and makes sense moving forward with newer models.

I’ve used my 42mm Series 2 SS Apple Watch for marathons (my time 3:45) but also recently for a four day stage race (trail running). Battery lasted 6.5 hours before giving up but that included using moving maps (WorkOutdoors App) and not using workout power saving mode.

I used to be all in with Garmin for over a decade (did a dozen Ironman and Ironman 70.3 races) but these days I’m 100% Apple Watch. I use it in the pool, on the bike and running.

If I still did multi-sport events, I’d probably still use a Garmin... or if I cared about other metrics these days (cadence/power on bike, etc). I just don’t care about that stuff anymore as I know my body well enough. Sometimes you can have too much data IMHO.

Meanwhile, the MacBook Pro's pixel density has not been improved since 2012. At least we know where Apple's priorities lie...
Thank You!
I still didn't figure out why Apple doesn't put in a 4k screen. Practically, there's no reason against it. Keep in mind an iPad mini already has a 2048x1536 display...

I can see why you’d be unhappy about being dumb enough to go diving before removing expensive electronics which could be lost. ;)
And yet Apple introduced the S3 with a video of a user engaging in a very physically intensive sport in the water. Much more than intensive than our friend here.

Also: compassion and courtesy.

Apple's upcoming Apple Watch Series 4 models will feature larger displays thanks to reduced bezel size, and information 9to5Mac discovered in the most recent watchOS 5 beta suggests the 42mm Apple Watch will likely have a screen resolution of 384x480.

The current 42mm Apple Watch Series 3 model, for comparison, has a resolution of 312x390.

With the higher resolution (and increased PPI), Apple Watch Series 4 apps will be able to display more information at a higher resolution on the display, as shown in the example image below that were taken from a modified Apple Watch Simulator using a guesstimated PPI of 345.

As was seen in leaked marketing materials last week, the upcoming Apple Watch Series 4 models will feature at least one new watch face capable of displaying up to nine complications at one time.

Additional new watch faces could be included, and information taken from the beta suggests there will be new types of complications for Apple Watch apps to use.

Given the increase in resolution, third-party app developers will need to tweak their apps to work with the new Apple Watch Series 4 screen sizes.

This rumor is not a big deal. big deal re-designs are if the watch can display the time continuesly without being dark as a regular digital watch does and can use to make a phone call independently from the iPhone. As someone who has a great muscular physique as Jeremy Buendia, a US bodybuilder and a great health, this Watch does nothing to me.

Thank You!

There are reasons against it and I think that 4k is somewhat nonsense in a 15” laptop.
Firstly it consumes a lot more power -> reduction in battery life
Secondly you would need to scale up almost everything to ~200% to see the, thoroughly. Like in the windows world. So you lose the benefit of 4k. Besides my macs I have a fully specked xps 15 and i’m Always changing the scaling between 150-200%. With 100% you’re only getting a headache. Some apps work with 150 some not so it’s a constant play (don’t like it)

Someone might still need that 4k and it’s their right to demand it. I just can’t see the point.

You'll have to wait a while for that. A lot more battery power would be needed to keep a retina watch running longer than the current watches. That would need a significant breakthrough in battery research and related basic chemistry which hasn't happened for a couple of decades now. If it does happen, you'll see major changes in everything from watches to lorries and beyond.

Deal breaker for me was that I needed my readers to use it. My eyes aren't done getting worse. I doubt this will help much but I will be checking it out as I spend a lot of time on the road.

I thought Series 1 and Series 2 have the same speed?
Series 1 uses S1P which is basically S2 without GPS in Series 2?

He’s referring to the OG series 0 Apple Watch which is exceptionally slow.

I just got mine replaced under the battery program and was hoping for an upgrade but got an OG Watch back.

Between how slow it is, the fact I no longer get WatchOS updates, and the higher pixel density, I might finally upgrade! It might be to an EOL S3 Watch though if the price is right.
