I've been using ST for past 2.5 months on 2 of my windows phone 7 phones and service has been great. no issues. I buy my prepaid cards in 3 months increments and from wallmart online. So far no complaints and I'm saving around $45 a month from sprint

International Texts on Straighttalk w/$45/month Plan

I have the $45/mo plan and I can text Spain and Nicaragua just fine from USA.

So Chester, That's just with regular old texting and NOT some app? Or, perhaps I should ask, how do you "dial" the international number? And are you getting those texts for "free" as part of your $45/month?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I want to be sure before I initiate the switch. Thanks.

Yes Deborah, included. To send the text I have for example my sister's number stored on my phone book. It begins like this: 011 34 followed by nine digits (her phone no). And for my brother: 011 505 followed by eight digits (his phone no).

As far as I know ST has never harassed me about sending Int'l text.

Straighttalk and International Texts on $45 Plan

Thanks Chester!

I'd still like to hear from others if they have been successful texting internationally on the $45/month ST plan from their Iphones. I just hope Straighttalk doesn't get wind of this.

No problem Deborah. This is also a reason why I got ST $45/mo. Plan in the first place.

You can definitely send international texts with the $45/month plan. Sometimes it seems to depend more on the receiver (or their provider) how quickly they receive the texts. I've texted my dad several times and other friends in South Africa.

Deborah, you'll probably want to start using just country codes, instead of the "011" to dial international. Any mobile network should recognize this. For example, you'll dial the "+" symbol, then the country code, and then the number. I use +265 for Malawi and +27 for SA. You can use "011", but this is a US-specific dialing-code, and if you're in other countries, that code changes, whereas the +countrycode system will work anywhere.

Umiwango definitely has a point Deborah. I forgot to add that too about using country code symbols instead of the 011, to use +. Either way my relatives in Spain and Nicaragua get their texts. But yes, using the + should be a universal GSM standard I guess.

Gapper, Do you have the $45/month plan or the $60/month International plan?

Mine is, as others mentioned for themselves, the $45 plan...

texting is just +countrycode and number...

I am in NY by the way, and reception and data is as how it was on ATT...

May be buying an AT&T iPhone 4 today to use on Straight Talk. One thing that I'm not sure about. Does the phone have to be unlocked and jailbroken? There are some who say no, but that will lose out on some of the features.

Could someone verify this for me. Thanks.

No. The phone does not need to be unlocked. I just started using Straight Talk today. I purchased a Craigslist iPhone 4S for $350. I ordered a sim card and 30 day credit and I just followed the instructions on the Wiki Page and everything is working perfect. I used the T-Mobile Sim Card Swap to get Data and MMS working (you may need to use a different technique for iPhone 4) My Data Speeds are very good 3-4 MBPS Up/ .7-1.5 Down, so no complaints.

Now I am going to try to set my Voicemail up through Google Voice and that should be the end of it. I actually had a Verizon iPhone 4, that I flipped and got the GSM iPhone off of Craigslist. The catalyst of course is that Verizon has decided to force my hand, either go to a vastly inferior Cellular/Data Plan or pay full retail for the next iPhone. I think the Legacy Cellular companies in the USA are out of control. I spend about 4-5 months a year in Europe and pre-paid plans are the way to go, if I didn't have the experience that I had in Europe I may never have even thought to look for pre-paid iPhone solution here in the U.S. I think that Straight Talk, Virgin, Click and anyone else who is smart and savvy enough to provide attractive plans for their smart phones i.e. iPhone will benefit greatly in the next 12-24 months.

Sorry for the rant, but the long and the short is that you will have no problems with a locked iPhone 4.

P.s.

Thanks to all the previous posters for providing information and links about this topic.

Thanks for the info. There is a wireless store here in town who sells the Straight Talk sim cards for $30 and I think they will set the phone up for use so I think I will take it to them.

No problem. By the way I ended up using Youmail for my Visual Voicemail.
Good luck with everything!

So I bought an At&t iPhone 4S off Craigslist tonight. Here a few basic questions that I have in relation to the phone being set up for Straight Talk.

1) It doesn't have to be unlocked, correct?
2) It only needs to be jailbroken if you want MMS working, correct? MMS works on iMessage by default, correct?

1- correct it doesn't need to be unlocked
2-to be able to use MMS, you need to either do the SIM wap method or jailbreak and install tetherme to change APN settings.

Hi, I'm from OKC,OK and MMS wasn't working for me until I removed the ":80" from the end of the MMS proxy field characters. Hope this helps someone. Thanks for everyone's input and advice!

Ok, one last time, I promise..... ;)
To use MMS with ST, if you have an iPhone 4S you can do the SIM swap method, jailbreak and install tetherme, or follow the instructions that I posted previously in this thread that does not require a jailbreak and will work with both iPhone 4 and 4S.

And I'm under the impression that the SIM swap method sets you up for data and MMS without having to jailbreak, correct?

Yes that is correct, because as soon as you enter the CDN settings, you'll be able to update both: the APN as well as the MMS settings.

Right on. They seem to have things so backwards.

If You are on the $45/month ST plan, would you try texting me in México?

I know this sounds weird, but I've heard from several of you who say they can text internationally at no extra cost. I am actually in México and have a local phonenumber. If you'd be willing to text me, please private message me and I'll pass you my phone number. I want to see if Telcel will let the text come through, as they are notorious for doing everything in their power to charge customers (for example, they have blocked texts from Pinger, a free texting app I have on my Iphone). Thanks anyone who is will to help me out with this.

I've been trying Straight Talk out on an old AT&T iPhone 3GS and so far the experience has been pretty good. I didn't see anything on Straight Talk's site about setting up voicemail and finally found a code to dial and enter to get it working on the iPhone. Then I was able to set up the voicemail. Dialing * 86 didn't work.

One thing I noticed at a relative's recently is that my number came up as Out of Area on their caller ID and not as Wireless Caller with my number. Has anyone else had this happen? I don't really like that because Out of Area calls are usually telemarketers and people won't answer.

Other than those few issues everything works just like it does on my Verizon iPhone 4 except Visual Voicemail.

OK, this is a looooong thread with many updates in it. My question is this

I have an iphone 4
It is unlocked
It is not jailbroken and I prefer to keep it that way

What do the instructions give you in the packet provide? Just text and call? or also data?

Do I follow those instructions or do I use the unlockit website? That gives calls, text and 3g right?

As far as mms, what is the best method? wiill the sim swap with tmobile work on the 4?

Visual VM will not work period right?

Also...side note, why does the APN settings provided not work out of the box in terms of mms and data, etc?

Thanks!
