Does anyone else keep getting bumped to page 16, even though it shows page 17 exists?

Edit: well, it seems my post is the first for page 17. I have no idea why it was showing a 17th page...

OK, this is a looooong thread with many updates in it. My question is this

I have an iphone 4
It is unlocked
It is not jailbroken and I prefer to keep it that way

What do the instructions give you in the packet provide? Just text and call? or also data?

Do I follow those instructions or do I use the unlockit website? That gives calls, text and 3g right?

As far as mms, what is the best method? wiill the sim swap with tmobile work on the 4?

Visual VM will not work period right?

Also...side note, why does the APN settings provided not work out of the box in terms of mms and data, etc?

Thanks!

If you can access your data cellular settings (APNs, MMS, etc.), then set up will be much easier for you. On a phone locked to a network, normally you can't access those settings. Can you access it?

I only have a 3GS, jailbroken but not unlocked, so I'll try to answer these as best as I can.

Correct. You just get text and calls. But if you can access your cellular data settings, you can set up data yourself. Just make sure you put the right APNs in.

Unlockit only has to do with MMS/Data settings. I tried to use them, and it didn't seem to work with my iPhone. I put in my settings differently (I can post them if you want).

Again, if you can access cellular data settings, it's best to do it yourself.

Visual VM will not work period right?

I believe this is correct. It's a service of each provider, and Straight Talk doesn't provide VVM.

Also...side note, why does the APN settings provided not work out of the box in terms of mms and data, etc?

They would, except most of us have locked phones and can't access the cellular data settings.

iPhone Straight Talk MMS Solution

Hey everyone I'm from OKC,OK and at first my MMS wasn't working. I tried taking the ":80" off from the end of the MMS Proxy and it worked. Now I have working MMS to all phones including non-iphone users. Hope this helps someone...Oh and I edited my APN settings through the TetherMe App from Cydia. I'm on 5.1.1

Thanks for the tip. Where did you get your MMS settings from? Unlockit or ST? and are you just jailbroken or unlocked too? I'm guessing you couldn't see the MMS/CDN settings until you installed TetherMe.

You can't see CDN even if you are unlocked. I have a factory unlocked 4S and I still can't see my CDN unless jailbroken or having to do the SIM swap method. This is something that Apple has put some sort of restriction on...unless some models released in Europe have somehow been allowed to enable this feature, it is not present here on our devices unless we are JB.

There was another thread if I can recall, where we can send a support improvement advice to Apple and they should perhaps take it into consideration to allow us users to have access to these type of features such as CDN.

I was able to see the APN and MMS fields on my factory unlocked 4 when I had my T-Mobile microsim inserted, but while I have my Straight Talk microsim inserted, I lose access to it (just like an AT&T microsim).

Rajiv I was always on the impressions that these fields were kept hiden by Apple and not the carrier SIM settings, how strange because many people on this forum have had lots of problems adding their MMS settings on their tmobile SIM and couldn't send MMS...I also heard there was a new fix added in iOS6 where tmobile MMS settings are auto added.

PS: I'm sorry if I misled anyone, I didn't know that some factory unlocked iphones do have the field CDN visible. Did you buy a pure factory unlocked at Apple Store or was it branded at&t, and bought off as "device only". Mine was bought off as "device only", maybe that is why I dont see the CDN field visible.

Hey Chester:

I had bought mine device-only as well (branded AT&T).

What service were you using that didn't allow you to see the network settings?

Straight Talk and previously at&t (those are the only 2 service providers I have used my unlocked iPhone 4S with).

One of these days I plan to unjailbreak it and just to investigate I will purchase a tmobile prepaid SIM to see if it allows me to see CDN.

Assuming the default BYOD, it is one in the same. AT&T = Straight Talk.

A T-Mobile SIM would allow you access to the APN settings with the swap trick (4S)

Ah, makes sense.

I'm pretty sure you could stop in a T-Mobile store and they would let you borrow a microsim for a minute just to test it out.

I plan on returning the T-Mobile later this year when they complete their 1900Mhz refarming.

I was thinking the same thing "refarming 1900Mhz". I'm waiting for the refarming to take place in Miami so if it happens then I'll probably also get tmobile. Currently I'm jailbroken so I have tether me installed.

PS: thank you for the advise, yes it'll be cheaper to walk into a tmobile store and ask to borrow a micro SIM.

What is the most amount of data you ST users have used before being cut off? My dad is currently using ST in his 4S and he has definitely gone beyond 4GB.

I don't know the most amount of data someone has been able to get, but as long as you stay below 100MB/day and 2GB/month, you should be good.

Well he's streamed multiple shows on netflix in one day and had not been cut off...

He just got off the phone with ST Technical Support and the person he spoke to said as long as he is not using the phone as a hotspot he will not get throttled or caped. He can use unlimited data without throttling as much as he wants as long as its being used on the phone. I realize the representative he spoke to may be full of crap but....

From reading around the forums the last few weeks, I would take that statement with a grain of salt.

But here's to hoping Straight Talk has changed their data limit behavior.

Considering Straight Talk runs on AT&T network...it is technically a Official Carrier for iPhone....so apple assumes and I bet the APN that gets "Automatically" selected is the AT&T APN, As for T-Mobile USA it is not a Offical Carrier of the iPhone, therefore Apple does not add its Carrier.Plist bundle within the iPhone's Carrier Bundles....that is why most of you probably see the CDN available to you rather than when you are on any AT&T MVNO(Straight Talk, H2O Wireless, Red Rocket, AirCel etc).

***This info is purely a prediction as to why CDN isn't available for users on AT&T MVNO's....I have gone through my carrier bundles and don't see T-Mobile USA...I hav a Factory Unlocked 4S...I bought tetherMe Years back when it was super cheap:) so its been nothing but helpful.

This is great news satnam, I didn't know this. I was always under the assumption that Apple just disabled CDN accross the board, but not only on carrier list approved carriers.

Very interesting, and it kind of make sense.

So this means that the suppression of CDN occurs in the database playlist, not the SIM or via Apple servers.

I have always gone through iPhone instruction books at Barnes&Noble and have seen the CDN option very available for readers to see. I always wondered if that option was available only on European model iPhones or their carriers like O2 and so on.
