Considering Straight Talk runs on AT&T network...it is technically a Official Carrier for iPhone....so apple assumes and I bet the APN that gets "Automatically" selected is the AT&T APN, As for T-Mobile USA it is not a Offical Carrier of the iPhone, therefore Apple does not add its Carrier.Plist bundle within the iPhone's Carrier Bundles....that is why most of you probably see the CDN available to you rather than when you are on any AT&T MVNO(Straight Talk, H2O Wireless, Red Rocket, AirCel etc).

***This info is purely a prediction as to why CDN isn't available for users on AT&T MVNO's....I have gone through my carrier bundles and don't see T-Mobile USA...I hav a Factory Unlocked 4S...I bought tetherMe Years back when it was super cheap:) so its been nothing but helpful.

I can confirm this. I just unlocked a 3GS, put in an AT&T SIM card, CDN doesn't show up (along with Carrier selection). With the Straight Talk SIM card, it was also hidden. When I stuck in a non-US SIM card, both CDN and Carrier selection showed up.

Thanks for the tip!

Heads up...

I've had the unlimited plan for four months now, and I thought I'd try the $30 plan instead (I'm using my phone a lot less these days). But when I went to the StraightTalk website, I didn't get the $30 option. So it seems that if you bump up or start with the $45 a month unlimited option, you might get stuck with that. I should probably call ST to confirm, but I can't be bothered.

The BYOD program only works with the $45 unlimited plan.

does the iPhone 4s have to be unlocked for ST?

No, no phone for the BYOD plan has to to be unlocked to be used.

Ok I got it and it works confirmed. Find a tmobile SIM, hot swap it, "cellular data network" will appear, put back the ST SIM, make the proper mms changes and hit back, where "cellular data network" will once again disappear it works without jail breaking on 5.1.

I have done it repeatedly to make sure it works, and it does work. I would recommend the MMS Max Message Size: to leave it blank because it worked for me :)

note: where it reads "No Service" it is when I had temporarily the tmobile SIM inserted in order to make "cellular data network" appear, then swapped back to the ST SIM and start making the changes.

Thanks for the tip!!! After a few tries I got it to work. Also another tip I learned while trying is you can double tap the home button and go and try a picture text and if it doesn't work you can double tap it again and go back to settings and you aren't blocked out. I learned this after a few times of having to pop the sim in and out.:D

No. ATT iphone works with the att byod sim.

Nope, that is incorrect

Well, I just got an email back from Straight Talk and they confirmed what Tuukka said: that if you're BYOD, then you can only use the unlimited plan. Which is kind of strange because I was pretty sure that I saw the $30. But anyway. Only a $15 a month difference. Oh well. :_)

My dad and I have both been using ST. He's got it on his 4S and I got it on my Nexus. We each have streamed over 8GB on our phones and have not gotten yanked. We even called their tech support and they said as long as you are using data on the device and not tethering its unlimited.

A $15 difference is not bad, compared how a post paid service may be. $45/mo. is a great deal.

yes i still don't have mms but no big deal i guess

i just ported my # over today from verizon and its working great i should of did they a long time ago!

Jailbreaking is usually pretty easy if you follow directions. Then purchase TetherMe from the Cydia app store to access your CDN settings (for data, MMS, etc.).

I plan on returning the T-Mobile later this year when they complete their 1900Mhz refarming.

I chose T-Mobile over Straight Talk because of the their $30 plan.

However, I have to reset network settings about every two days to get texting to work and I've lost the ability to send pictures through texts(could do this for the first week). I also haven't been able to update to the cloud while charging my phone since I went to T-Mobile.

Thinking about switching to Straight Talk.

Excellent news! It is now possible to activate MMS capabilities on an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1 without jailbreaking.

Thanks to gillham over at HowardForums

I had tried it a few days ago with no success, but with additional testing, was able to get it to work.:)

Just a reminder. You don't need to jailbreak to get MMS working on StraightTalk. But you DO need to have a few tech skills (or access to someone who does)

I just bought my daughter a used AT&T iPhone 4 and ordered a sim from Straight Talk and will dropping her line from Verizon and porting her number shortly. Sracer, I'll be checking out your link on MMS as soon as we get the phone activated.
