Take a look to my post that I quoted. It seems like I have to keep repeating that link since people who frequent this thread keep forgetting about it. :(

Sorry, I didn't see that. In some cases it almost seems easier to jailbreak. But you're right. If someone can't or doesn't want to jailbreak, and is willing to do those steps, they can get MMS working.

Has anyone tried buying one of the phones that let you get the $30 package and then swapping the sim into the iPhone. Is that a way to get on the $30 plan or no?

Thanks!

If you don't mind my asking, why would you want to do that?

What about looking at RedPocket's plans? They seem to have better differentiation.

Unlocked AT&T iPhone 4 + StraightTalk + Tethering + No Jailbreak possible?

Like a lot of folks, I bought the iPhone 4 when it first came out. As a result, it is now eligible for free unlocking by AT&T, which I've gone ahead and done.

I'd really like to get tethering working for very rare use, but don't want to jailbreak my phone, nor do I want to pay AT&T's inflated costs. Is it possible to enable tethering when using StraightTalk without jailbreaking?

I searched the thread and saw some people mentioning tethering, but usually only in the context of jailbreaking. I was wondering if maybe having the phone unlocked changes things...

Halfway through my first month with ST's at&t sim and I'm quite pleased. Data speeds are the same and in some cases better on the mvno which has me scratching my head.

I'm a happy camper.

Afaik jb'ing is required for tethering. The iPhone believes it is still on at&T's network, in reality it is, and the hotspot is restricted.

As GotLuck said, the easiest way is to jailbreak, but there are two other (more complicated) ways that I know of.

You can do the sim swap method, which involves putting a non-AT&T sim card in the phone (it may even need to be a non-official Apple carrier) and then editing the CDN settings (which will appear under Network settings).

Second, and as Sracer keeps reminding us, you can edit the configuration via backup files. See this link - http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1760217-How-To-AT-amp-T-locked-iPhone-4-MMS-working-on-Straight-Talk-no-jailbreak

$30 just seems very attractive if it's a phone you do not need data on really, and the 1000 minutes would be more then plenty. Just seemed like a way to save an extra $15 for those few people, like my grandmother, who doesn't need data.

Gotcha. Did you look at RedPocket's plans?

So just from skimming through the thread it seems that the only catches are no streaming media Pandora, no visual voicemail, and no MMS. Is that right?

1) I'm pretty sure you can get streaming media... just not tethering.

2) No to visual voicemail.

3) You can't get MMS out of the box. There are three ways you can get it working, with varying degrees of difficulty. Just read the posts on this page and you'll see the options.

You can stream whatever you want; you just have to be cognizant to not go past approximately 2GB / 30 days.

Just read itouchaddicted from the beginning of this thread, all the instructions are here in this thread.

Use this tool to change the APN settings. Straight talk customer service is very helpful to tell you the settings to type in.

My Straight Talk sim is on the way. My 4S is jailbroken, what is the easiest way to get MMS working considering I don't have to do the whole backup editing trick? Any link?

If you're willing to spend some money, purchase TetherMe from the Cydia Appl store. That's what I did. It allows you to edit the CDN (cellular data network) settings directly in the Settings menu (as you should be able to). I think it's $4 or something like that. I found it was the quickest way.

Thanks, I actually already own TetherMe but I spent an hour googling around and I was wondering what the definitive APN settings are for MMS to work?

This can be done with the iphone config utility?

Well, I just downloaded the utility and tried it out. It only looks like you can edit the data APN, not the MMS APN. So no, I don't think you can edit the MMS settings with this config. I've only spent 10 minutes with it though.

I've attached a screenshot of the configuration page.

My daughter's sim came in this afternoon and after supper tonight we got her up and running. The porting process was clean and simple using the ST website. It took about a half hour for the porting process to be completed and the iPhone to be activated. I did the unlockit.co.nz routine to get data working then jailbroke it using absinthe 2.0.4 and downloaded tetherme. In just a couple of minutes I had mms working. All and all I had about 45 minutes invested and got everything up and running. EZPZ! Oh yeah, and I'm jealous of her 3G speed. 3+ Mbps down to my 1.25'ish on my VZW iPhone. Come on LTE!

I have the Verizon iPhone 4s unlocked with gevey ulra s (extra 40 bux at applenberry) On ST, works great I get about 4 mbps mostly. That is in NY and Ohio. As for anyone that is getting cut off at a data limit it's because you guys are tethering. They have people monitoring the tethering apps. As long as you don't use illegal actions on the phone you will not be cut off. It's unlimited as long as you dont tether. I have used over 20 GB in a month (a lot of Netflix and Pandora) You can call and ask cause I sure did before I went crazy because i've herd the same thing (mainly on here). Just a little input and why tether quit being cheap and get internet on your PC. If you pay an extra 30 a month for it and you have straight talk its still cheaper then having an iPhone with Verizon or ATT directly and paying 90-120 a month. Just my thought.
