People should probably take the HDR tags above with a grain of salt as they may not be fully accurate (For instance, I'm seeing Dolby Vision in some spots, and only HDR10 in other places).

"Lucy" shows up as 4K & HDR/Dolby Vision for me.

I don't think iTunes is done adding titles yet. For instance, you mentioned "Diamonds Are Forever" and "For Your Eyes Only". Apple appears to still be adding titles, and correcting HDR info.

There's still multiple Sony titles available on ULTRA and Amazon in 4K that iTunes doesn't have available. There's still some WB, Lionsgate, Paramount, etc. films on VUDU that aren't listed as such, and FandangoNOW has a ton of Universal titles, and a few FOX titles that aren't currently showing up as 4K on iTunes (yet).

I'm seeing HDR on "Deadpool" and DV/HDR on Fifty Shades.

I'll have to check some of these again when it releases. They may not have been finished updating. That's great news on Deadpool and Lucy because Lucy is a mediocre movie but a reference quality 4k/HDR disc and I hear the HDR on Deadpool is outstanding as well - which seems weird because other than the suit the colors seemed muted to me (in the theaters).

I've streamed 4k with Netflix almost daily for over 4 months now. Must be your city.

My Internet is great, but I spent 2 yrs fighting with Xfinity before it got this good. But the OP is correct internet in this country generally speaking sucks. We're probably in the minority of those who have great internet, especially uncapped internet.

Wonder Woman - UHD/4K, Dolby Vision HDR, DD 5.1 ???

VUDU
UHD, Dolby Vision HDR, DD+ Atmos !

WTF Apple?

Apple used to set the standard for quality audio with music, but, when it comes to movies, they are lagging behind!!!
How much is the title on Apple vs Vudu? Is there a big difference? I really wish they had updated Apple TV to give us Atmos or even DTS-HD.

intersting. Honestly though, at the prices that is a small sacrifice. You cannot even rent UHD from Vudu for $7.99.

$19.99 on Apple for 4K/DV, and $29.99 on VUDU for 4K/DV.

Hmm, ok. Well then I guess they are simply updating the store-front visually and they will release the actual 4K/HDR versions at a later date.

Most likely, though it could also be that it's simply not available on anything but the Apple TV 4K at this time.

I suspect that when the Apple TV launches there will be a big feature section of the movies available. And then it will likely be one of those smaller buttons like the ongoing 99 cent rentals

I assume they will give us the ability to search all titles available in 4K. At least I hope. That's my main complaint with Prime and Roku now. Even when you search Prime with "4K movies" or "UHD" it's hit or miss and doesn't do a good job. Netflix used to have a 4K section, but it's currently not there. Not sure why they removed it.

There's no way to play the content back until the ATV 4K comes out next weekend.

Wow... Uh...

So, H.264 isn't "defunct". It's still in use by *LOTS* of things. For example: Blu-ray discs. It's also called "AVC", which you may have seen in many places, like the iTunes Store, or iPhone video recordings.

And H.265 shouldn't "be identical" - it *IS* identical. The UHD codec *IS* H.265, also called "HEVC."

However, in both cases, the disc-based formats use a higher bitrate than download/streaming services. In each format, more data generally means higher quality picture. For example, my Blu-ray copy of Rogue One uses about 40 GB of space. My iTunes digital download uses only 5.6 GB. The Blu-ray is a significantly higher quality encoding. UHD/4K downloads vs. UHD Blu-ray are similarly way off in size. The discs can just hold a lot more data than the streaming/download companies are willing to put to a movie.

As for "streaming issues was the AppleTV itself", that doesn't apply to the person you are likely addressing it to, since they specified they see stalls streaming on computer, too.

As much as people want streaming to replace physical discs, it's not possible without giving up quality. Blu ray was the same way. I knew streaming a HD movie wasn't going to look as good as Blu ray, so I typically bought the Blu ray discs of the movies I really loved and where the higher quality mattered. And in most cases, it made more sense b/c I still received a HD digital copy with the disc purchase..........which Apple has now upgraded to 4K where studios have made them available. I'm just excited that my 4K library has quadrupled literally overnight. I can't wait to get my AppleTV 4K next Friday!

Seeing that they haven't updated that app in over a year...my money is on no. In which case, AirPlay it.
This would be very sad but u made a good point, the app is so old, they just updated all the other Youtube apps like on the ps4 and smart tv's with the gif like thumbnails. As far as airplay i don't think that would be a solution for 4k playback ether being airplay's limit is 1080p currently i believe.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet - but has it occurred to anyone there won't be options for 4K download or streaming on Mac until High Sierra is officially released at the end of the month? Your Mac simply won't play 4K iTunes content without the HEVC support baked into High Sierra.

If you freeze frame images and pixel peep Blu-Ray is better. but for 99% of people both

Don't forget that H264 Blu-ray codec is way lower profile than an iTunes Movie. That's why often 1080p iTunes movies are smaller than the 720p versions but way better quality - because they use a higher profile H264 encode.

Yes - If you freeze frame images and pixel peep Blu-Ray is technically better. Just like a 100MB WAV file is better quality than a 1MB mp3.. but if 99% of people can't tell the different.. does it matter? Especially when streaming is more convenient. When John Wick is 7.99 and the physical disc is 24.99 how long is physical media going to last out? Good enough is... Good enough. Otherwise Betamax would have won!

holy **** am i reading that right, John Wick for 8 bucks in 4K?
And here I am carelessly throwing 25-30 bucks a 4K UHD disc at Best Buy....

I feel like i've wasted so much money.....

4K titles should have never costed more to begin with, physical, digital or otherwise.
you really think 4k streaming is the same quality as 4K UHD disc??

The difference will be so minor no one is going to care at this point.
true but i dont watch movies on my ipad tho.....

I don't think 4K/HDR has been enabled on the iTunes desktop apps yet.

About the iPad, you say that you can't download the HDR. What happens when you download a movie from the cloud? Does it have HDR/4K symbols on the Video app? If you download it and try to transfer it to your Mac, is the size the same as listed on the iTunes Store page?

You say that you can stream the HDR version. Did you notice a difference? Is it truly the HDR version?

(Damn it guys, more people need to follow his example and actually test things.)

The downloaded version on the iPad shows 4K HDR Dolby Vision, even though the iPad doesn't have a 4K screen, which I find odd. (See image from the TV app)

The streaming version seems to be subjectively "better" - I tried both Warcraft and Star Trek Beyond, comparing them to streaming on the iPad Pro and downloaded on the iMac. The iPad streamed version looked better, colors seemed richer with better shadow detail.

When I download the two test movies to the iPad and tried to sync back to the iMac using "Transfer Purchased Items" nothing copies across. It's as if iTunes simply doesn't recognise it as a valid, purchased movie file, although iTunes shows over 14GB taken up on the iPad by two movie files. That's bigger that the same two movies downloaded in iTunes, where the combined size is only 10GB. The files downloaded to the iPad look like they contain extra information, so the bigger size.

UPDATE: Warcraft is 6.93GB on the iPad, but only 5.1GB in iTunes. PhoneView cannot copy the movie files over since they "Cannot be found on the device".

UPDATE: I no longer see the "4K" tags on the movies that I saw all throughout the day earlier today. It seems they have reverted them back to say "HD".

Canada's worse;

http://www.rogers.com/consumer/internet
http://www.bell.ca/Bell_Internet/Internet_access

Those are basically the only ISPs available in Canada (there are others, but not really).
Not everywhere in Canada. I live in Montreal Quebec Canada, im with Videotron and get 120 down and 20 up for 66.00$ and that’s with unlimited bandwidth. I stream Youtube, Netflix, Amazon prime video all in 4k with absolutely no problem. Ill have no problem streaming 4k on atv if available to stream. Can wait to try it out!

Thank you. Is this some shocking fact that nobody knows?

In general though, Canada's among the worst countries in the world for telecom. Pretty much the only country that's got a more pathetic situation is Australia.

Thanks for all the info dude, I really appreciate it.

So I guess I was right, the movie sizes will go up by a couple of GBs. Someone on Blu-ray.com reported something similar.

My SD digital copy from Despicable Me Blu-ray says 4K, but it’s only 1.52GB, SD :(

So, with iOS 11, HDR will be supported with some devices, but at 1080p resolution, as these screens are not at 4K resolution. This could account for the somewhat larger file size (...it would be much larger if it was 4K), and PhoneView not recognizing it.

true but i dont watch movies on my ipad tho.....

They showed clips of iTunes 4K Spider-Man at the presentation on a Dolby vision 4k cinema projector. You know what hasn't been reported? That it looked rubbish compared to blu ray.

There are people today who listen to flac audio and vinyl records because it's superior. 4k blu ray will be like that. For the 99.9% of everyone else we'll be just fine and not tell the difference.

I might be wrong but think digital copies from a disc are limited SD versions.
