Does anyone know if the free 4K upgrade applies to code redemptions from buying physical media? Or is it only if you actually paid for the movie through iTunes?

Edit: Never mind. It wasn’t initially showing up for me, but now all my movies have changed over to 4K!

Very excited for this. I went through to see the titles that I have updates for and it's very impressive so far. Over 50 titles are upgraded most in Dolby Vision/HDR! Almost more than what's available on Vudu and this is just my own collection, who knows how many more titles are eligible at this point (even before launch). It more than "pays" for my Atv 4k because now I'm not even tempted to buy any of my movies again :)

The only chink in the armor is it doesn't seem to like Special Edition versions of things (like The Hangover) and it's missing some key titles like Lucy, Dredd, Power Rangers, Watchmen, E.T., the HP Series, Hunger Games (yes, crap movies, but they ARE out on 4K UHD) and it still doesn't update the Standard Def versions (don't understand this at all, now).

My list (unless otherwise noted all 4K Dolby Vision)

Wonder Woman
American Sniper
Arrival
Bad Boys (shocked because this isn't even out, it should be glorious in 4K DV)
Batman v Superman
Chappie
Deadpool (4K which is curious because everyone says the HDR shines on the Bluray)
Diamonds are Forever (4K)
District 9
Entourage 4k
Ex Machina
Fast and Furious 6 (4K)
Fences
Fifty Shades Darker
Fifty Shades of Gray (4K)
Focus
For Your Eyes Only (4K)
Furious 7 (4K/HDR - Blu-ray looks stunning)
Fury
Ghostbusters (original)
Goodfellas
Hacksaw Ridge (4K UHD is reference quality)
Hangover Pt II
Hercules (4K)
Huntsmen Winters War (4k)
Independence Day Resurgence (4K UHD looks amazing)
Jack Reacher Never Go Back
John Wick (One of the best UHD Blu-rays out)
John Wick 2
Joy
Jupiter Ascending (4K, really pointless without the HDR)
Kingsmen (4K/HDR)
La La Land (Looks beautiful)
Labyrinth
Lego Movie (looks beautiful)
Mad Max Fury Road
Magic Mike XXL
Man of Steel
The Martian (4K/HDR the UHD Blu-ray is beautiful)
The Maze Runner 1 & 2
Oblivion (4K)
The Peanuts Movie (4k)
Point Break
Princess Bride (4K - no HDR is weird since Vudu has it)
San Andreas
Sherlock Holmes 1 & 2
Skyfall
Star Trek Beyond
Suicide Squad
Terminator Genisys
Warcraft (4K HDR)

Very impressed by how many titles are available in 4k at launch.

Nice to feel that we're not being ripped off for once.

I think it is pretty well established Apple is trying, but content providers are pretty determined to not repeat the digital Music debacle. Apple is having trouble getting terms that match up with their desired product or products.

Yep, film and tv studies saw what happened with music and they aren't going to give Apple that much control over their content and practically give it away so Apple makes money but they cant. Nor should they.

John Wick 2 is only £7.99 in the UK store, most new HD films are between £9.99 and £13.99. Logan is showing as 4K in the app for £9.99. 4k Bluray releases over here are £19.99-£29.99, Amazon streaming is the same price as the Blurays, guessing Apple are going to get some flack from the retailers.

Rent the 4K HDR UHD Blu-ray from 3D Bluray rental.com for $5.99. The picture quality will be much better than a streaming version.

This is an important point. 4K just means the source is 4K. You won't get a 4K picture. It's all a bit misleading in fact. 4K bluray is the only way to get proper 4K video.

Hey I have John Wick in my iTunes library. Pretty sure I bought the code from a forum member here. Let's see if I now have access to the 4K version.

Great action flick BTW. John Wick 2 was equally good too.

1) That has nothing to do with bitrate. Name me a single Blu-ray title that would be higher than the theoretical throughput of 15Mibps if streamed. Blu-rays are 25 and 50GB, and 15Mibps is 52.7 GiB. If you run the numbers even ore you see that at even at 3GiB per hour from iTS you only need a sustained 6.81Mibps throughout for that node.

2) You've completely ignored the codec when focusing on bitrate, which is why HEVC allows for smaller files (i.e: few bits for a given second of compressed A/V) for a given quality over H.264.

That's why sustained in being used and Whiplash doesn't get when he says that my statement of "If you can sustain at least a 15Mibps you'll be fine to stream 4K+HDR content from the iTS" is false.

When did I say that your statement is false? Really? I would like to know when I said this. I said I HAVE TROUBLE with a 300 Mbps plan because of my issues. I never once said that 15 Mbps sustained is unable to stream at 4K.
[doublepost=1505478277][/doublepost]
If you were paying attention you'd now that's not the discussion. He called me a liar, well actually Apple, since I posted their statement minimum sustained throughput that he discounted outright. Everything I stated was factual, which includes him being able to get 4K from iTS if he can get his connection to maintain at least 15Mibps instead of suggestion that his 300Mibps connection isn't even good enough for iTS content at any bitrate.
[doublepost=1505466684][/doublepost]

I'd bet there's a logic reason, even if that's just playing it safe. It can take a lot of extra effort to idealize given video to another source and then verify it. Hope either Apple and/or their content vendors are using SW (written by Apple) encode to HEVC after testing the content and looking for areas of concern that may affect playback quality. Hopefully they can look at how the colors are placed and transitions so a program and idealize the settings to make it as small as possible with out losing any of the quality. Here's a list of some settings: Profile type, level, FPS, VFR, RF, and others.

I'm not even sure if any of this is affected by having HDR, but I'm sure we'll see a lot of testing over the next several weeks.

Again, at what point did I call you a liar or Apple? I never NOT ONCE said that 15 Mbps sustained speed will fail at 4K streaming. NOT ONCE. Do you realize that 300 Mbps is my plan and not my actual speed? What I said was my 300 Mbps plan from Spectrum is not enough for 4K streaming because I keep dropping to the 3s or 5s. I could have a Gigabit plan, but if I keep dropping to 3s and 5s, it still wouldn't matter.

This is not about your/Apple's statement being false (good reliable internet, the statement is true). It is more about the absolutely poor internet in our country that a 300 Mbps plan struggles at 4K streaming. I would GLADLY pay more for MUCH MUCH less if it was guaranteed to be reliable. Unfortunately, Spectrum (or moving) is my only choice.

Weird, some movies that I've seen upgraded to 4K over here (like both Sherlock Holmes) are not in 4K yet in the iTunes Store in the Netherlands

I would expect them to be 7-10GB based on history.

I expect something closer to 4-7 depending on the 1080p size.

I also hope apple gives us the option to download 1080p HEVC.

1080p on iTunes has been 3.5-5GB, about 1/10 of classic Blu Ray.

UHD Blu Ray is 66-100GB, about double of normal Blu Ray.

4K has four times the pixels as 1080p.

I know, but something like the Martian (extended), the BD movie alone, without the extras, is 35GB. The same movie in 4K without the extras is 50GB. So we'll see but I don't really see it doubling.

Only doubling for 4 times the pixels is an extreme increase in efficiency, and iTunes is already compressed to hell.

There must be a discussion about this somewhere already, but 64GB instead of 32GB for $20 more? Why do they even bother offering the 32?

Remember that the studios decide what is available for whom and that there are most probably still local rights issues that prevent some content to be available globally.

It's still a big step forward and I hope Apple keeps on pressuring the studios for more and more content.

Unlike music where I am of the opinion that every artist should get their fair share, the most studios in the past earned more and more money with practically the same content through various releases. I will probably never buy discs again, since I paid thousands and thousands already and most of these discs are now of very bad quality in comparison, which is not an issue with streaming since it could always get upgraded.

If Apple would do the same for lossless audio I would say that iTunes / Apple Music would be my number one choice for most content, but that remains a mystery right now. Unfortunately.
