Storage options aside. If they want bragging rights to have ProRes and Raw then they need to support the bandwidth that goes along with larger file size and storage. That means the latest in WiFi 6 and USB C/Thunderbolt instead they neuter what should be basic and focus on vacuous features. It communicates to me they think little of their customers as pro. Apple's innovation is customer entrapment not capability.
Extremely well said. They’ve become a fashion company without concern for functionality. It’s bizarre but I guess it makes them money. Of course, that attitude lead to their near bankruptcy in the 90s when pros moved to other platforms that actually supported their work.

I personally don't see the appeal of using an iPhone for film making. I don't want to tie up my phone and communications device on set as the production tool. An iPhone costs now as much as a Blackmagic Design Pocket 4k camera. Sure that may not include lenses but there are a ton of good budget level lenses out there now.

The way Apple sells these phones and limits the cool new video features to the latest model one would need to upgrade their phone every year which costs a lot. Just to match many of the capabilities of existing video cameras. It may seem like its a free video camera you get with the phone but you are paying for that camera and three lenses and three sensors. Lets say over the past three years one bought a Pro iPhone to shoot video first for the better computational low light, then for the cinematic mode and now for the cinematic mode in 4k. Thats $3,300 in three years vs a camera that can already do all of that that will last many more years. You can get a P4k for $1,300 and the other $2,000 will buy a lot of lenses, audio, lights and support gear. all of which will yield 1000x better movies than just shooting with the iPhones.

Apple promotes film making on the iPhone with a high production value crew because thats the only time video looks good from an iPhone. Unless one has the budget for a full crew and equipment the iPhone is nowhere near a production ready camera.

Don't get me wrong. Its neat what it can do and for those that wanted a new iPhone anyway its cool to have a video camera this good in their pocket. But no professional is going to rush out and buy an iPhone for a serious production. They may utilize sometimes as a tool to accompany other cameras on a production but nobody is going to plan a budget production around just using an iPhone. Not unless they were hired by Apple to do so for marketing and promo reasons.

When Apple figures out a way to add/remove storage at will, add/remove batteries at will and control aperture or some sort of chemical or electronic ND to adjust exposure then and only then will pros consider using an iPhone for serious work. Using just the shutter speed to adjust exposure outdoors is the absolute opposite of professional video.

More ridiculous the fact that in order to transfer these massive video files you still have to use USB 2.0 Lightning or have to rely on wifi.
Some people have reported it taking DAYS to transfer a 500gb prores file to their Mac Pro for editing. Insanity. And Wi-Fi isn’t much better as stability with massive files suffers.

I am sold that my 11 pro photos are not that good now, but I am not sold that 14 pro is worth the upgrade, comparing to other phones especially those with Leica lens

my belief is people are confusing the fact that they can still record video in 4k.

If ProRes was a necessity, 128/256/512 should-would not be an option for you...

for professional work, you're not going to be able to do the job if you can only record 20 minutes of the 1-2 hours you need.

let me guess: "but you can transfer the 20 minutes, delete, and record another 20 minutes"

well if you're going to stall an entire film crew because you didn't want to buy a 1TB iPhone, costing the entire production budget more than the money you saved, then that's just illogical.
At this point you’re just being argumentative for the sake of being argumentative. Maybe someone has professional needs where they don’t need to record so much footage. Or maybe a non-professional wants to be able to record any amount of footage.

There’s no justification for them selling a phone with a camera that has one of the camera functions disabled. I don’t care if it can only record for 20 seconds. Either give people the option to do so or don’t make the phone at all.

Since it’s not at all clear that the phone is actually missing a feature relative to the next storage capacity in the lineup, this is only going to lead to some confused or upset people out there who don’t understand why their iPhone 14 Pro doesnt have a feature that the iPhone 14 Pro was advertised as being capable of.

Apple could at least put a large warning sticker on the box of every 128GB model, NO ProRes capabilities on this 128GB unit, requires 256GB minimum. It would be better of course to make 256GB the base capacity, but Apple will be Apple.

Yeah that's what I find ridiculous... With this feature last year the 13 Pro's should have had USB-C, or even going back to the 12 Pro redesign. But Apple loves its lightning royalties...

What’s even the point of selling a low capacity phone that can’t even use the camera? The 128 should’ve never been part of the line up. I would rather that they added a 2TB tier for the real power users and started at 256. If the 128gb cant have feature parity with the other sizes, don’t bother selling it!
The 128gb model “cant use the camera”? That’s a little too large a claim, even if I understand the frustration over 4K on the 128gb model.

Apple seems to benefit from the fact there just isn’t competitors with the same refinement in HW and SW (even if iOS is extremely limited) at the $1200+ level. Android just isn’t there yet and I don’t see another OS coming to market. Apple has a monopoly on this high end market for now.

There are plenty of customers who don’t care about ProRes video. For them the baseline 128gb model will suffice. No big deal. It does suck when you don’t know about this and just ordered the baseline model. Luckily for them they can return it and buy the 256gb version. It’s really a first world problem imo.
I wish I knew about the distinction I didn’t

But 128 is still the capacity for me and still not a deal breaker

I think you and I are just going to go around in circles. If you believe that what Apple is doing is the right thing....great. I just believe that when someone spends the money on any of the Pro lineup, they should include exactly the same features and not have Apple make assumptions about how someone might or might not use their device.

no circling here.

agree to disagree.

"for the sake of being argumentative", no i truly believe what apple did is correct. the problem with endless complaints is apple stops listening. attack apple where it they need to be attacked. this is not one and will simply be drowned out from apple's ear like the rest of the unreasonable complaints.

128GB storage speeds can be slower to the point where it cannot record 4k prores for one.

techspecs page lists it.

Nonsense. This is a company that is serving its shareholders, while employing hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Its REASON FOR BEING is to make money for stakeholders and provide consumers with products they want.
Customers should vote with their wallet and don’t buy these products, that might help apple to reconsider their anti-consumer practices. I am certainly skipping this generation (and I generally upgrade each year).

This is not Apple specific, but if “making money for shareholders” is a company’s sole reason for being, that company is unethical.

Not everyone needs 128GB. And shouldn't have to pay for it.

If you need more memory, simply pay for it. Easy.
Memory is cheap, apple shouldn’t charge that much for it considering the phone is already overpriced as is.

There was only one iPhone available when Steve Jobs was alive. just 3 different capacities.

I dont know if you recall, but Steve Jobs was opposed to larger screens in iPhones, saying that 3.5" fits best.
I wish jobs had it his way and there was still just one iPhone, with different capacities. This whole plus, pro and pro max is only a way to squeeze more money off customers, there should be just one model with all the features available at that time, as it was when jobs was alive.

No, the phone is not overpriced. If Apple overpriced their phones, no one would purchase the 600,000+ iPhones Apple manufactures and sells every single day of the year (on the average). People vote with their wallets as there are loads of phone choices out there.

Rather than complain, send Apple a strong message by simply voting with your wallet and purchase a Samsung or other phone.

Will you do it?

In the U.S. you can return a new Apple product within 14 days days. So one could order at 256Gb iPhone and return this 128Gb reject after about 12 days. It would be a hassle but better than regretting what you bought IMO. (I got the 128Gb ... will stick w/ it as I don't do movies but had I realized this limitation I would gave gone w/ 2156Gb.) As to the description of 4K video, an asterisk is definitely needed, see screen capture.
