Lot of good ideas and wishes for the new 4th generation iPod Touch here.

Besides finding out if Apple will actually deliver any of this to the new iPod Touch, i'm interested in understanding what Apple's product strategy for handheld touch devices will be now that the iPad is launched as well.

There is a lot of cross-over between both the touch, the iPhone, and the iPad, so Apple will need to do a balancing act to ensure that they keep their shareholders happy by driving efficiencies and increased sales from all products.

Could the Touch end up being the odd one out, not getting any significant upgrades (camera etc) and instead a lower price point? Any thoughts?

I think the ipod touch was already the odd one out last update...now with the iphone update this year and iPad launch I don't know what would they do to make it better, probably add a camera? maybe just make it cheaper and add memory....with a camera everyone would want the ipod touch again but would demand it for the Ipad -who was crippled since the beginning- so they would add it next year and everyone would love the Ipad again...it's sort of a macabre act that :apple: is puling, slowly giving us what they could add since the beginning to make mo' money! mo' money! the cow of the infinite udders!

How's about:

The new A4 chip (Apple's custom chip in the iPad)
Up to 128 GB
Decent iPhone like camera

Can't think of anything else, that would be perfect

A4 chip I doubt would happen for the itouch.
128gb? Seriously, guys? Let's stop doubling...
256-500gb please. :D
That'd be so amazing I would SO buy that itouch for the price!
I could careless for the camera, just let it be 4mp, let it be better than my phone. LOL

- Same screen as iPhone 4G (probably OLED)
- Same camera as iPhone 3GS or 4G
- Built-in microphone
- Vibrate
- White or chrome side buttons instead of black

Dude, you're smoking pot or something. There's a reason why they have the iPhone and iPod Touch seperated. iPhone has the phone plans, 3g internet, mic, and vibrate feature, not to mention more durable. iPod Touch has nothing, except for the .... well actually, just slimmer. Maybe the vibrate feature, but nothing else on your list. I would love to have vibrate! That'd bring back the feel of console gaming, instead of just seeing it happen on my itouch screen and be like "Dude, this is so gay."

Alright, so in having dealt with an iTunes library that outpaces my iPod 5.5g by over double for about the past year, I think I am finally ready to admit to wanting an iPod touch. :p

So, going by nothing more than what Apple seems to do for updates on a yearly basis, would you say it's fair to assume the next iPt update will have at least the following:

New capacities:
  • 16GB - $199
  • 64GB - $399
  • 128GB - $499

New Processor, which will match in September whatever was introduced to the iPhone in the summer.

A new software update which brings with it some of the things offered in the iPhone 4.0 update.

Next up is just speculation on what Apple might add just on basis of what's in other iPods right now.

  • A camera, likely the Nano's low resolution video-only one.
  • An A4 chip, only if Apple choose to use it in the iPhone as well.
  • Access to iBooks as a part of a software update, although this might canabalize iPad sales.
  • A microphone for voice recording.

The real tragedy is that with the iPad coming out, Apple now has to restrict what goes on their new iPods in order to maintain the market-ability of the new product. Which means I think we can definitely count out 3G data plans, and probably iBooks. Which is a real shame since the Touch is such a portable, carry-all device in comparison to the larger (and arguably limited) iPad.

Very good point indeed. I doubt they'll even put a camera on it, they want to keep the camera to the iPhone last I checked. Would an A4 chip even be possible for the iPhone/iPod Touch? How would it cannabalize iPad sales? iPod Touches are harder to read anyways, plenty of people would continue to buy the iPad over the iPod Touch if they wanted to read. As for a microphone for voice reading, there already is. You just have to use your stock headphones with Remote and Mic. May not be what you would like, but it works. :) Another feature that they want to keep for the iPhone only. Now if they would just give us their aluminum backs and vibration, which I doubt they would do for vibration (Another feature of the iPhone :( ) and implementing aluminum backs, which I really hope they do! :D :apple:

How ridiculous. They need to start competing with FULLY featured products instead of half-assed ones designed to string along consumers. If they don't they will get their butts handed to them. iTunes and the iPods already have constant database problems. They better get their act together and stop worrying about selling "magical" fairy nonsense and get back to making hardcore, bulletproof jaw-dropping products.

Here is what should be in the 4th Generation iPod touch, add to the list.

I want-
LED/ OR OLED Screen, more likely LED.
Aluminum Back for no scratch, and(same glass screen) finger print resistance screen.
60% brighter screen
Cheap just like now, Drop the 8 GB and make it 16GB because 8 GB is a rip-off at $199.
Still/ Video Camera, 3.2 mega pixel camera.
40+ battery.
Same fast processor/ graphics GPU.

These should be on the two high end versions of iPod touch of 32 GB and 64 GB or even 128 GB if available.

16GB $199
32GB $299
64GB $399

POSSIBLE 128 GB $429
so what are the chances of a camera appearing on the 4th gen. i pod touch?
and also why aren't there coloured backs like the i phone?

*Facepalm*

Stop asking this. PLEASE.

The reason they aren't adding a camera is they intend to keep the camera to the iPhone! Well, maybe iPad. :) But that's the only thing besides iPhone. The iPhone has a plastic back, not a chrome back. Although I would like to see aluminum back instead of "breath on scratch" chrome. Can't even keep my iPod Touch from getting scratched. :apple:

Sorry Dude, a camera is coming. Jobs knows all hell is breaking loose, he has to stop screwing with his customers.

That's why he's putting it on the iPad. They will never put a camera on the iPod Touch until they have nothing better to do, but there's tons of things they need to improve. If the iPod Touch recieved everything that everyone asked for, there would be no iPhone. So stop asking, and stop thinking they'll put a camera on the iPod Touch. They never will. If I'm wrong, good for you. :apple:

I'm pretty sure a camera is in the works, there's been quite a bit of evidence that they had it set to go but then ran into problems, and had to scarp it last minute. I'm still also hoping for an OLED screen.

It's just gonna be an iPhone without the vibration motor, phone, GPS and maybe no camera.

why all the doubting that the A4 will be in the new Touch?
Apple certainly appears to have designed the chip to be able to go into the entire line and it will be both more powerful and cheaper for them to use.
what's not to like about that? Lots of people are complaining that the iPad needs more than 256MB mem and maybe it does but Apple is looking at the A4 to be used more than just the iPad so 256Mb is the standard for that and the other devices with iPhone OS. Remember the A4 has all it's memory on the chip itself to save space and component cost so once it's there it's there for all devices.

Now if the screen will be any larger can certainly be argued but my feeling is to watch and see what the next gen iPhone has when it comes out in July, any major changes in size and chips will most likely be followed by the Touch in its next release. I do think a camera is still a possibility since we know that it was left out last time probably because of space issues. The next generation of camera chips should solve that and the Touch needs a bit of a boost to compete with the iPad.

I think if you are going to pick features that WON'T be in the Touch the best bet is that it won't have 3g like the iPad and will still be WIFI only but that's only my guess.

Mabey

Chromatic, like the G1 it should have a back/return button so it dosent forget your last session you were on. should also have it so you could use anything to use for touch instead of just fingers like any pencil.

Wishful thinking...:apple: won't let a 128gb Ipod Touch for $429...not never. That's a huge amount of space...and I'm pretty sure it's not going to be that cheap lol. Maybe $600...

Might as well buy a lap top at that point, or save your self a truck load of money and get a iphone that has a better prossecor and a camera and all that jaz without a contract. way, way way better!!!

The itouch 4th generation ideas

The itouches should be chromatic, but only black, , red, blue, and orange. While the iPhone gets all colors. Like the iPod nano and Ipod shuffle how the shuffle has a few colors and iPod nano has all he colors. Also the itouch should just have a camera, no video and should be able to take photos. Only 100 and should have to buy a video recording app. Only 32 gb and 64 gb has built in microphone still. Also Iphone should get 4g, and have direct photo uploads to photobucket and videos to YouTube. Also make it were you could touch the screen with anything. I would like to use my DSi stylus to play a game or two.

OLED- I would LOVE to see an OLED screen. I don't think it is going to happen though at least not this year. Or unless the iPhone will have one, if the iPhone has one then we might get one.

Brightness- I again would like to see a brighter screen just to help out with sunlight and reflecting, stuff like that. If there is an OLED screen it will definitely help out with brightness.

Price drops- I think we will see the 64GB iPod touch only if the iPhone gets a memory boost. So much of the iPod touch is actually based on the iPhone so you can't forget about it. Also yes, if the iPhone gets a memory boost I think Apple will do a 64GB and then have the prices trickle down like they normally do.

Camera- I think this is the one feature on the new iPod touch that I can garrente. Apple took out the camera in the last iPod touch update for which seemed like no reason. So, I think they will add it in this update. I would also love to see video go with it.

Battery- Everyone loves boosts in battery life. Again, an OLED screen would help with this because an OLED screen is so efficient with mobile devices.

So we can expect the 4th gen touch in june? I want to upgrade my 32g 1st gen touch. Hopefully it comes with a camera.

I hope we get an idea of when the 4th Gen is coming soon, as my 6 year old iPod has finally died. So I am interested in buying a 64GB iPod Touch, unless an updated model is coming soon.

Any news?
