I've always assumed that whenever a "curved screen" was mentioned they were just referring to the slight curvature of the current display. I think it's pretty obvious at this point we're getting another glass sandwich design like the iPhone 4, but with the subtly curved glass of the last 3 years. The iPhone 8, 8+, and 8 edition will all look pretty much the same except the edition phone will have the expanded oled display and something interesting home button wise. Duh

Best iPhone rumor yet...really hope it's true. Cannot stand the curve screen on the Galaxy phones. Of the Galaxy owners I know, none really care about the curved screen beyond the look. And if it's biggest benefit is just the ascetics, I'll gladly pass. Never appealed to me.

I am willing to trust Apple on this. They generally have good taste when it comes to designing stuffs for humain beings. I haven't seen great design using a curved screen yet.

I don't think it is a new dimension, it is just a gimmick.

[...]

If Apple cannot solve this problem, they will not implement this gimmick into their phones.

That's my point - when a curved display is implemented properly it will add a new (valuable) dimension to an OS. So far Other companies have failed to meaningfully implement a curved display - I'm hoping Apple will do it properly.

Good, curved phone screens are gimmicky and weird. For TVs I understand, but what's the point on a small screen?

I have experienced curved TV's. To even fully appreciate and take advantage of the full experience, you need to be sitting center and rather close to be immersed in the picture. It's not what they're all made to be and I don't foresee curved TVs being predominant in the future over flat screen. I haven't used a curved Samsung phone, so I can't attest to that.

The 7 Edge Galaxy was too curved, but the Note7 was perfect. Just enough to feel good in the hand, but not too much to be plagued with accidental touches. Part of why I hated the Edge versions.
As for curved TVs... I like them. I have a 65" version. The curve is subtle, but gives great viewing angles from anywhere in the room. You have to live with one for a few days... then it makes sense. Seeing one in a showroom doesn't do it justice.
Even my wife was skeptical, but now she likes it better than the flat panel.

Note 7 curves were better than the S line. I had both. But it still caused distortion and reflections that I hated.

So is there a valid reason to call it 18:9 instead of 2:1?

I mean, there seems like absolutely no point in that at all to me, so I'm wondering if there's some good technical reason.

Also, agreed on curved screen bad, now let's just get rid of this OLED silliness, LCD is better.

I will be very surprised if apple does oled this year and it is not curved. Apple is reliant on Samsung at the moment. Samsung is currently mass producing 5.8 curved panels for the s8. Does Samsung currently have the capacity to diversify at the volume apple will require?

I just don't see the point with curved displays in most cases. Curved TVs are dumb because they limit the viewing angle, so unless you're single and alone and sitting in front of it eating Cheetos and slamming the "Dew", I don't see the point.

The same "mostly" goes for monitors, although my 34" Ultrawide monitor *could* maybe be more useful with a curve.

But for phones, it doesn't make sense to me at all. It's technology in search for a solution in my opinion. I also don't understand the allure of a bezel-free design. You need to put your fingers somewhere to hold the dumb thing. The only way or reason I could see this would function would be to run the normal state of the phone to have the bezel, but when the devices goes to full-screen mode, you could then consume the entire front area of the device. This would make the device usable, while providing a larger display for games or movies. If OLED is used, then the bezel would appear to be truly off (instead of lit up like a standard LCD) so it would work aesthetically. The screen could also show information at a glance in a low-power mode.

I think it will be very difficult to implement 3d touch when the sides of the glass panel is all in one piece.

But I'd still want the bezel-less screen.

I don't understand anything about this messy lineup. and I don't understand why there should be a premium iPhone which do not suit my needs. I thought all the iPhones were supposed to be premium. In this case it's not

Yes, true. Aren't all iPhones supposed to be premium? I think Apple is a premium brand, shouldn't all product are as premium as it should be?

Actually I don't find the main purpose of curve screen yet? I don't feel Samsung curve screen has high impact to my Normal usage.
Unless Apple can figure out the main function of curve screen, or else I won't support.
I still don't know find 3D Touch very functional too.

I still wish Apple will launch one iphone instead of 3 different sizes.
I wish Apple don't create something that look fancy, but don't actually have high impact to our daily life.
Wish Steve Jobs spirit is still surrounding Apple's staffs.
Please make Apple great again.

Anyone else originally plan to wait for this model but decided instead to purchase the 7 now instead? Thinking I may pull the trigger on the 7 this month. I'm sure this "Edition" model will be an amazing phone, but perhaps with the high initial price and an entirely new design it is more wise to wait for a price drop and to see if there are any major flaws with the new design.

this is the best iPhone 8 rumor ever.
curved screen is absolutely useless and true definition of gimmick.

Having tried out an Iphone last week, screen was just a bit too small, but loved the form factor as don't need bigger phones personally anymore as far as footprint, but the screen size takes a while to get used to something smaller. That 4.7 form factor but all screen will be a great combo.

I have had a Note 5 since launch a year and a half ago, and will be very interested to see the S8, which will have the same size screen as the Note 5 (5.7), but put into the package of a phone that's just a bit taller (but same width) then the IP7, according to the leaked size specs...and that will give a good idea of what the OLED Iphone should generally feel and look like.

I think it quite amusing reading through the posts here and how curved screens are described as pointless useless, and unnecessary ....I seem to remember reading the same sentiments against big screens at one time

I wish they would make one that was more squared off like the SE. The Space Gray SE is the perfect design, it's timeless, modern, and beautiful. Every time I see one I just stare at it. Just stretch it out and I'd buy it.

The more I read MR articles about the next iPhone the more I realize they're like "we don't ******* know"

Take the lesson of the iPhone 4S release. If it seems massively crazy and there isn't really a reason, it probably won't happen.

No. Kind of the opposite. I was originally planning to upgrade to the 7+, but I was too busy and kept putting it off until the supply constraints were over. Then a life change (from employed to early retired--but no less busy) caused me to rethink my priorities. I decided I could get another year out of my iPhone 6+.

And if I'm going to make a new habit of keeping my phone for three or more years instead of two, I'm not as freaked out about paying a bit more for a flagship model. I still have income from my investments, and as long as I don't jump at every shiny new toy that comes around, I can afford to treat myself occasionally.

I actually welcome the curved display. It can add another dimension to the OS - and we all know iOS needs another dimension.

Other than a tricky look, what "dimension" does it add? Seems like unusable wasted pixels, lower battery life, and more $'s.
