I hear you talking about bezel sides... but did anyone stop to think about it?

-Side bezels: With a case on I can already barely get to the edge to perform a "swipe to go back" action that often takes a couple of tries
-Bottom bezel: It's already about as small as it can be without removing the home button. I'm not sure we're at the point where the home button can/would be removed.
-Top bezel: until apple reduces the bottom bezel, the top bezel isn't going anywhere. Keeping it symmetrical

I'm not saying I don't want smaller bezels, and it's amazing how small the Galaxy Edge S7 is for being a 5.5" screen, but I'm just saying there's a reason Apple hasn't done this yet, and I'm not sure that reason will be changing in the next couple years.

That being said, a 5.8" iPhone with the same bezel size would be pretty monstrous.

I'm starting to get the same impression.......

This might be a year where they do some internal spec bumps but i don't see any design changes. Or what about we don't get a iPhone upgrade this year at all and they wait until Summer of 2017? June 29, 2017 would be the 10 year anniversary........

I hope that this year there is a design change. Normally there is some design difference

If they increase the screen size, they'll likely keep the bezel the same size. Also, yes, so much yes, about the whole bezel thing.

Same here. I love Apple and iOS but there are some things I expect the iPhone 7 to have. If it doesn't have wireless charging, fast charging and better screens, I may have to get over my hate for Android

I'm curious, why "fast charging"? I find just popping my 6s onto the charger for a few minutes adds hours of standby and normal use time. I'd guess the rate is about 5 minutes of charging gets me another two hours of normal moderate use. How much faster is actually helpful?

Contact charging would be nice. Charging my Apple Watch is easy, as I lay it on the charger which is in a stand. Plugging in my phone at night is just a bit fiddly. But it is a once or twice a day event, so not a big deal.

Screen is great. There are arguably better screens and I can see the difference in color accuracy if put side by side. But I can't see how I would actually enjoy slightly better color in any meaningful way. My iPhone and iPad screens are still the best screens I use. They blow away movie screens, my TVs, work computer and home computer. So they seem great now. And I can't see any greater resolution than what the iPhone offers now.

So let's do the math. iPhone 6s Plus has the screen resolution of 1920 by 1080 (401 PPI), but with device pixel of 2208 by 1242.

This supposed 5.8" OLED iPhone will probably still have the device pixel of 2208 by 1242, but scale down to similar pixel density of 2048 by 1150 (405 PPI).

If you ask me, however, I would much prefer 5.5" OLED display at 2208 by 1242 resolution, ideally with such smaller left and right bezels.

Ok, so my first post here but read every day.

This is too little too late. Can't believe it's going to take another year or so for OLED displays.

Long time iPhone user (longer than most, probably : got the original iPhone in the drawer next to me).

Why would I stick with my iPhone 5s now? We've got the Samsung S7 with always on display, available now.

All the extra things Android can do (Nightshift? I wanted that. I now hear it switches off low-power mode). Android : Install Twilight...

Ultra-low power mode - seen it in use - it's great. And it doesn't switch off when reaching 80%, if you don't want it to.

S7 : Brilliant camera by the look of it. Love the idea of the always on display.

Now that almost all apps (and far more useful ones : set profiles based on where you are? Nice!) are available for Android, why bother with iOS anymore.

Any this is from someone who has Xcode running right now on my MacBook Air, so I'm not an Android fan.

Seriously, what are Apple going to do to innovate? It seems they can't keep up.

I agree with you and would go a bit further and say that the next step to make charging less of an issue is not contact charging, but contact-less charging. With any of the contact charging solutions, you still need to plug in a cord for the contact pad, so it's not exactly wireless as it's promoted. And Apple is working on it, as are others, but it's years away still. I'd be fine with going to a mag-charger connection, if they could make that work, so as to remove yet another hole in the iPhone's case.

The thing with shifting to OLED that will be the biggest change is going from primarily white backgrounds to black, in order to maximize battery life. I agree that I'm not sure how much better the iPhone screen can get - at least improvements that I will actually notice.

Why not just turn the whole iPad lineup into cell phones and give people the option for really big screens.
Use Skype and Whatsapp and you are already there. I can count the number of calls I make with the actual phone app per year with both my hands. Text messages is a bit different but I say 90% is iMessage or Whatsapp by now. The main use of the phone app is for receiving calls. But what iMessage does to texting, WiFi calling might do to standard phone calls.

Bahaha... OLED in 2 years. Apple once again proving it to be a joke of a company, always being way late to the party, just like taking THIRTY years to make a two button mouse.

Pathetic.

Now where are those members who were getting headaches in OLED and stating LCD to be superior?

Thank God for a true innovator like Samsung pushing tech and innovation to the limits. Otherwise this industry would be stuck with a 3.5 inch rectangle with rounded corners, and 720P resolution. How innovating!
Apple seems to be copying Samsung literally every inch of the way.Sammy is the true innovator here otherwise we would be stuck with LCD

I'm guessing we're going to get a new 3D Touch method in 2017 or 2018. Can't work the way it does right now with OLED.

iPhone 7 seems to be a very crappy update compared to the **** that's happening in 2017 and 18 .I mean it's just no antenna lines, and a thinner phone.I may be sticking with my 6 till the OLED iPhone

"we" who? I was perfectly happy with iPhone 4 thickness. I'd rather get a lot better battery life than a slimmer phone. Can't really see the advantage of a 5.8" display either and I still don't see a point in buying a phone without the 3,5mm jack at this point of time.

It appears there's nothing to look for in the iPhone 7. I'll just skip a generation hoping they'll realize their mistake bring the jack back for iPhone 8. Or maybe I'll finally have a new car and buy bluetooth dongles for all the places I currently use my phone in. Not holding my breath waiting for that to happen for just a PHONE. Even less so am I going to waste a cent in lightning-enabled headphones.

At least I've replaced my macbook retina 15" with a Chromebook in most situations. Mac beats it in every aspect except for one: Battery life. I can easily squeeze 15 hours out of the chromebook compared to ~5 I can get out of the mac. Guess which one I rather drag around when I have to be able to rely on the battery to work. For the last few weeks mac's been just my home "desktop". Give me a phone with 2+ day battery, screw the other features.

He meant, Johny Ive thinks we want thinner phones. I don't know anyone outside of Ive and Apple that wants a thinner phone at the expense of battery life.

isn't it a bit problematic that apple's plans that are over 2 years away are basically just to achieve parity with what competitors have already been offering for a couple years?

i say this as a fan of smaller phones who doesn't really have a horse in this race... but when you can walk out and buy a android that fits a 5.7" OLED display in a smaller footprint than apple's 5.5", are you really cheering for the privilege of waiting 2 years for apple to do something similar?

Because to Tim and Johnny, thin is in! (At the expense of precious battery life.)

Seriously. Seems that iPhone 7 is the upgrade to skip.
What expense? The battery on my 6 plus is better than the battery on my 5 which was better than the battery on my 4.

I struggle to comfortably hold the 5.5" iPhone 6s. I can't see how a bigger screen is going to work for most people unless they change the design to allow for a more comfortable grip, maybe with a curved back. Personally I'd rather have an iPhone Watch.

So basically what this is saying is in 1-2 years we'll have:

iPhone se, bad specs, many features missing
iPhone, normal specs, features missing
iPhone + normal specs, few features missing
iPhone pro: good specs

Rip 4-4.7 phone users

At least two of your scenarios will have to be 4" & 4.7" iPhones as they're the most popular sizes. We are talking about a device that is supposed to be portable and light enough to carry around in your pocket. The iPhone 6s is heavy and bulky and I certainly wouldn't want to carry it around in my pocket all day.

Everyone is banking on this 2 year trend of refreshes which is nice for us but they don't have to go down this avenue if they don't want to. Personally, i would not mind if they saved everything for next summer and do a newly redesigned 10 year anniversary iPhone model. Heck, they can even do the keynote at the Apple Campus 2 by then as well. Would be a nice way to open up their new campus, too.
