They DID kill the cell phone. These technologies designed for 13 year old girls are getting out of hand. If you want a digital camera, get a digital camera. If you want to play games, get a GBA. All of these technologies are almost useless on phones anyway. Most camera phones take really horrible quality photos, and the games are half impossible to play because you're using a keypad. It's all BS for the mindless masses. And please, quit with the ringtones! A phone should sound like a phone, not an orchestra or the latest Hilary Duff single.
Tell this to the tens of thousands of people in Japan who don't have the means to have home e-mail, but can now send and receive e-mail via their cellphone.
And don't say that it sucks before you've been there and tried it. I lived there for a year, and e-mail via cellphone was a great experience. Simple, easy, and much better than the e-mail services we have on our cellphones here. For a teenager, student, adults, whatever that doesn't have the means to have a computer and internet access, e-mail via your cellphone was a godsend.
As for the cameras in cellphone, many new models have 1.3 megapixel cameras, and they are only getting better. Digital cameras, when they first started, sucked when it came to image quality. So that was a good reason to just dump the idea? Obviously, you aren't going to dump your digital camera for the camera enabled cellphone. But that doesn't mean it doesn't have use. I use mine all of the time if I see something at a store that I want to research more when I get home. Or, take a picture of yourself and send it to your friend's cellphone, your boyfriend/girlfriend's cellphone, etc. It's a nice additional means of communication. I have a friend in Japan I e-mail back and forth, and every time she snaps a picture of herself with her cellphone camera - it adds a lot to the e-mail.
Ignorance of the positive uses of technology is not a reason to condemn them.
As for this new iPod, I'm all for it. It is the same price as the previous highest model, yet would have a ton of new features, yet people are bitching about it - hilarious. And if you want a "music-only" iPod, then buy one - there is no hit that Apple is just going to get rid of every other model.
I have a digital camera with a color screen pretty much the exact same size as the iPod's screen, and it is great for looking at photos when you don't have any other means to. Carry a bunch of photos around with you, and when people ask about your girl/boyfriend, husband/wife, kids, car, house, city, whatever, bring out the iPod and show them. As I said, I lived in Japan for a while, and people always showed each other pics on their cellphones. As well, they have these photo stickers over there called purikura (print club / sticker club in the US), that are typically about half the size of the iPod's screen. Even at that small size, they're hugely popular, and fun ways to show off pics of your family and friends.
Showing off pictures on a 2" screen obviously doesn't beat actual, full sized pictures - nobody is saying that. But it also isn't useless, and would be a great thing for a lot of people.
