My thoughts on video: I think it will be a very nice feature. Look, if you have a TV to use video out then you probably have a plug too! I know I will love this if it's true. Plus, it's about time for my 2G 10GB (even though it's a very trusty piece of equipment). This will probably be my next Apple purchase besides AirPort Express.

But the iPod is a mass market consumer product. How many people do you know that know how to plug in a video source and select the appropriate tv mode / channel on their tv?

yes perhaps a fair amount of iPod uses would have no problem doing it. But to be honest i really think that Apple is going for a more mainstream approach with the iPod. yes it's simple for you and me. but i just don't think TV out is easy enough for most people.

the iPod would definately not have a tv out port on the unit it self, as that'd be VERY wastefull. So most probably you'd need a dock connector cable -> AV, or a dockconnector cable -> scart end. this whole video out things just seems so far fetched. Apple doesn't want people viewing photos on TV's anyway. they want the Mac to be the centre of peoples iLife's not a random tv.

I don't buy this whole iPod / iPhoto / TV Out thing.

i don't get it either..

i mean the ipod's view screen isn't that much better than my the camera that i'm taking the pictures with. ..and wait a second, i can connect my camera to the tv too!!... and it syncs with iphoto!! well..it doesn't put the pictures from iphoto onto the camera but you know what i mean.

anyway... does this mean that there might be a camera attachment coming for the ipod? god i hope not. I don't want everything i own to have a crap camera in it.

Definately don't want these sorts of features in the iPod.

Apple can and *should* do much better than this in terms of innovation.

this would be a step backwards in my view.

iPod was / is so successful because it's so very simple and elegant. adding more features only 10% of people want to use is stupid.

But the camera can't play a picture slideshow to music. Not that I'm saying that I really need that feature on my MP3 player, but I suppose it would be cool if done correctly, which I'm sure Apple can do.

Then stop complaining and go join the company and give them your own innovations and tell them how they should run their company. If it's not for you, leave it...Just like an earlier poster said, people complaining about something they don't want and need, is like guys complaining about tampons. Drop it.

how often do people really have "slideshows" to show photos to friends and family? how often do they play music with these slideshows?

These are all useless additional features that only very few people would want or use.

This is of course just my opinion of it. i could be wrong.. but thats how i feel.

hey i completely agree with you. If they go and do this and i end up not liking the final finished product i of course will not buy it. i'd be stupid to do so. It's the same as people complainging about "having" to upgrade to the newest version of panther so they can use the new iChat AV.

I'm merely voicing my opinion on here that i think this is wrong. Isn't this what discussion on mac rumors is for? Or am i only allowed to discuss my viewpoint when it is pro-apple ?

3rd Anniversary

Hey, don't know if its been mentioned here already, but 10/23 is the 3rd anniversary of the iPod. Seems like this could be a good launch date if there is a new color iPod...

What I want the next iPod (or whatever you want to call it) to do: Download photo's from my camera, preview them on a 2" color screen, and print via AExpress to my printer.

AAAARGH!

My new 40GB 4G iPod is out for delivery this morning, and now I happen to check ThinkSecret!?

D'Oh!

Maybe I'll just return it, unopened, and hold onto my 3G with the slightly faulty touch buttons for just a little longer... A 60GB color iPod could replace my Sony Clié NZ90, once and for all, now that it can contain and display photos straight from a CF card...

Does the Belkin reader explicitly support Microdrives?

How hard would it be to put a USB port on the iPod for direct hookup

-To a camera through pictbridge?
-To a printer?
-To (God forbid) another iPod?

If Apple doesn't come out with the 60 gig iPod soon, I may be forced to fly to Japan to get one of those Toshiba Gigabeat thingies.

absolutely. every mouse since the introduction of 2-button mice. i've said it before & i'll say it again, "steve, please get over yourself & give us an Apple branded mouse w/ multiple buttons and a scrollwheel so i can stop forking $$ over to MS & Logitech."

that being said, i want this new 60GB iPod and soon. bring it out soon & it will be my birthday present to myself (really? you would do that for me?) of course...you deserve it. (awwww)

...need more coffee...

I use my iPod for photo storage. I have the Belkin media reader, posted on this topic before here in this thread and in others. Personally I do not want added ports on my iPod, don't think they could even if they wanted to. The doc connection has the ability to transfer information, fire wire and or usb, and although I would like a better solution then the Belkin media reader, I like this method much better then adding a usb port. What I would rather see is better external components.

I would request wireless before added ports. That Toshiba Gigabeat thing, from what I have heard, works no better then the Belkin media reader and iPod setup, I just came back from VT with 300 photos all stored on my iPod, all full size, highest quality settings.

I admit that the cameras in cell phones, etc. are pretty crappy righty now, but they're progressing slowly, and will only get better over time. You have to be patient, as it is a new implementation of the technology - when digital cameras themselves first came out they were pretty crappy as well, being only a couple megapixels with low battery life and capacity, etc. Cameras in cell phones and other applications (future iPods?) will continue to progress and we just have to wait for the technology to mature in this respect.

Plus, 99% of the time, when Apple does something, it does it RIGHT, so if Apple were ever to implement some sort of iSight into the iPod for wireless iChat or whatever it might be, they're going to make sure they don't do a poor job of it. That's what separates Apple from a lot of other companies out there in my mind.

I'm pretty sure we're ALL a lot better off with the advent of those things.

Kay, then don't buy one. Not everything can be tailored to meet your specific desires.

Why don't you go work for Apple then since you think they can do such a better job. Or are you content with just complaining about Apple's innovation but not doing anything about it?

Only 10% of people would want these features? I'm willing to bet money it would be a lot higher than that, care to put your money where your mouth is? ;) The funny thing is, I'm sure the exact same statement was made when the first iPod rumors came out 3 years ago. "Who would want that?!" "That'll never sell!" "Only 10% of people would actually want this, Apple is stupid and needs to innovate better".

Actually, that is the anniversary of the ANNOUNCEMENT of the iPod. The ipod didn't actually come out until November 10, 2001 -- I know because I remember it was two days before my birthday and I decided to wait until the actual birthday to get mine rather than on the 10th.

I don't feel they're useless at all. In fact, I just had a slideshow for my parents last night, showcasing my pictures from my backpacking adventure through Eastern Europe. My friends do it all the time too - once they get back from trips the first thing everyone wants to do is see the pictures.

Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but you may want to refrain from using certain objective statements (i.e. "this is useless") when you are in reality making a subjective comment.

Exactly,... but even if they do, they'll continue with their practice of not allowing the consumer the option of a wireless keyboard and mouse with their computer purchase. Why should I buy a computer and HAVE to take a WIRED KEYBOARD/MOUSE when I don't even plan on using it (retorical) -- it seems there should be an option to get WIRELESS stuff and not have to pay full price.

To all naysayers..You don't think you would ever use such features simply because such features have never been available to you in such ways. A camera in a cellphone? That's STUPID. Who would EVER take a picture with a tiny camera in a cellphone? Exactly.

The original iPod was ridiculed for such things as well. People said that 256mb MP3 players are fine but who really would use a 5gb player to rip all of their cd's and carry them around. What a waste of time, right?

In conclusion, don't knock it until you've tried it, and unless you have a pre-production model, you haven't tried these features in an iPod, made by Apple. AND, by "tried it" I don't mean that you read the specs on the Apple website, heard from a friend, or saw it in an Apple Store. Until you buy a product and use it for a while, you have no idea of its capabilities and how it meshes with your everyday lifestyle.

i certainly wouldn't knock it without trying it but, if a phone took good pictures i would love a camera in it, but they just don't take good pictures. I can understand them as a quick way to remember something, take a picture of it... but for quality pictures they just don't cut it....yet.

also, i don't know who would complain about they ipod having 5gigs of space... when they first came out i had twice that amount of music and i thought it was still to small!

You'd be surprised how many people did though - and how many people complained about the iPod in general! ("Who would need one of those?!") Just goes to show you, not everyone sees the need/use for something right away, until they actually get one of them in their hot little hands - then it's a different story! ;)

I agree about the camera quality as well, as I stated in an earlier post - they're handy, but poor quality. Today. That's why I don't see Apple including a built-in iSight (or whatever) on the iPod for a long time - not until they can do it RIGHT. For now, let's see how this whole "Photo iPod" turns out and go from there....
